I’m a sucker for old homes! Can’t beat the character and craftsmanship that these old homes have. My husband and I renovated a 1910 Dutch Colonial and we LOVE it! Keep up the Reno videos...it’s bringing me back to that crazy busy but rewarding time in our lives!

Laura Campion, my husband and I restored a 1910 Dutch Colonial as well! Lots of work and money! I might not have done it knowing what I know now, but I still love it. It had been terribly abused, so we had to take it down to the studs. We did save all the woodwork and salvaged old flooring and other house parts out of 8 other old houses to use in ours. We wanted it to look as original as possible.

Lead based paint is good to test for, and it was manufactured till 1975. l am so glad you are fixing up that old house. You'll have a wonderful home that's better built than most of today's homes. Good luck!!!🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀

Yes a tub can be redone, but I have heard the tub can chip. Ask who ever you hire about chipping in the tub.

You have a good sense of the fixtures, mid century hardware, etc. that are worth keeping. Try to use your influence on your father and figure out ways to incorporate them. Good luck! It takes soul to do a project like this and it seems you're up to it.

We are currently restoring a 1900 farmhouse. It has years of lead based paint. There is a product you can use to paint over all the painted areas before you remove it to seal it in. Also buy a lead filtered vacuum that is RRP FDA approved. Do one room at a time with heavy plastic down and all doors closed. No open windows. You need to have a respiratory mask (specifically for lead) on just to walk through that. So many steps you really need to follow. Do your research on removing lead paint or doing construction in rooms with any lead paint. You can get very sick, just from walking all around in these old houses. Best of luck. :)

I love that you are keeping the integrity of this beautiful old home and going the extra mile to reuse original things, especially from someone as young as you (I mean that nicely). Thank you for sharing this journey. Keep doing the homework on the house with the county etc. Find people who may have old pics of it.... would be a cool b/w photo on a wall in the dining room. Great work Laura..... keep it up, and keep sharing please! PS Please cover the banister and stairs and floors before people come in and start working. They won't care about them and they are beautiful!!!

Im enjoying watching the renovation of your Dads house. Lovely to see you were saving things like the catches on the cupboards. I was however so sad to see those rag rugs just being trashed & left in the debris of the demo. They are probably very old & antique textiles are worth quite a lot of money. I hazard a guess that thete woukd be fabric in them from the depression. A great part of history . If you havent chucked them out ,I would look to save them. If you dont like them , you could sell them to create a bit more funds for the house. I look forward to seeing what you salvage & find in the rest of the house.

I found my farmhouse through falling in love with it and hunting down the original owners. It certainly is a labor of love, this one has five bedrooms (soon to be 4) as I’m going to knock down the one wall to create a master suite on the second floor with a master bath, directly above the kitchen. My fiancée and I aren’t planning on having any kids, two bedrooms are workplaces but we aren’t against the idea of ONE and I mean, ONE kid lol. I’m 23 but I’m sure that things will change over the years but right now, I am simply not prepared for a child lol

Very interesting project and house. Good luck and be sure to use a mask if and when you are concerned about inhaling nasties. BTW, the horizontal wooden backing for the plaster is called 'lath' (thin strips of wood) and it rhymes with 'bath'. A lathe (rhymes with 'bathe') is a turning tool for making bowls and dowel-shaped wooden or metal objects. Have fun!

Asbestos was typically used as pipe wrapping material, ceiling materials, shingles, or sometimes tile flooring. I've not seen it in laminate/vinyl flooring. We have a house built in the 1800's (look up the historical Sturgis house in Cheyenne Wyoming) and the asbestos is located in the things I listed. The only asbestos we have left in the house is the old pipe wrapping, which is not messed with. Asbestos is only a problem when it has dust particles caused from being disturbed or demolished. Our old 1880's furnace still works just as it should.
@brickbreaker8148
@brickbreaker8148 5 жыл бұрын
We had asbestos floor tiles in our house. Most made with asbestos back then were 8 x 8. We were assured they weren't that dangerous to remove if we didn't produce dust from removal.

We live in a older home 1856 . We had all slat and plaster removed down to studs. All throughout home. We also had all trim removed. Due to trim condition. Still has original staircase and treads. Need to check all old trim for lead base. That will possibly be where your trouble will be with lead. Don't stir up paint chips or dust. Then we ran all brand new electrical wiring and brand new breaker box. Then ran all new plumbing to everything. Put in brand new electrical heat pump and air. Brand New thermopane windows. New drywall throughout. We're in our late 50s. Bless your souls. Got alot ahead of you. Hope your financial means will provide alot out of pocket for this huge project. Best of luck. Wish you the best. Oh we also did all new vinyl. All our work was hired out too. We've been in our home for 10 years. And still are having projects hired out. Good luck, Tamson from Kentucky.

The type of lath you have can help date the parts of the house. I think that I saw some split lath in the front (or possibly riven or accordion). I definitely saw sawn lath in the back of the house. I'm in NC and own a home built in 1865 (estimate). True 2x4 studs were pre WWII. After WWII is when they started making 1.5 x 3.5 studs. My old house had original ship lap walls/ceilings. Its great that you have all original doors. We only had one left when we purchased our place. I suspect the foundation is NOT that brick around the outside, it is most likely rocks unless someone has redone the foundation at some point. I can't wait to see your progress.

It is supposedly original brick for the foundation because there was a brick making place down the road during that time

Wow, this is the exact kind of farm house I want and place. Quiet and peaceful. Perfect place to raise a family and have farm animals. What more could you want?

I wouldn't tear up a lot. as you may not have to pull the plaster down.And may save you money. Originally the old homes had there kitchens in a separate building to prevent the loss of the house if there was a fire in the kitchen.

11:32 WHAT WAS KEPT IN THAT CLOSET?! I hope anything what left those scratch marks is dead now... Also. Great craftsmanship on that door since it kept clawed thing locked.
