Love your videos - question if one has 2-rod stamp - can you fish for sturgeon with barbless on one rod and fish with barb hook for stripers on the second rod?
@MooMooOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. This is a grey area. Here is a question someone asked CDFW and their answer. Question: When fishing from a boat in San Francisco Bay, can some anglers target striped bass with barbed hooks while others target sturgeon using barbless hooks? If one angler who is fishing from a boat with a barbless hook legally lands and retains a sturgeon, can all anglers on the boat switch over to target striped bass and continue to use barbed hooks? (Craig. H.) Answer: There is no regulation that requires all persons fishing aboard a vessel with a sturgeon on board to use barbless hooks. However, the definition of “take” may get anglers in trouble if they are observed fishing in a manner consistent with those methods used to “take” sturgeon. “Take” is defined as “to hunt, pursue, catch, capture or kill, or attempt to hunt, pursue, catch, capture or kill” (Fish and Game Code, section 86). Game wardens are watching out for people who may be attempting to take sturgeon with barbed hooks, or are trying to circumvent the requirement to purchase a sturgeon report card by saying they are “just striper fishing.” So, be sure that there is no ambiguity over what you are targeting to avoid any questions of intent. I personally would use barbless for striper as well just to be safe.

@MooMooOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
This paddle doesn't have the drip ring so I'm getting even more wet. I was never afraid of getting wet. I think getting wet is just a park of kayaking.
@arkster004 жыл бұрын
@@MooMooOutdoors I get it. I used to kayak a while ago and had a Cobra Marauder. I used to get pretty soaked even with the drip ring on the paddle simply because of the kayak leash. The leash would drip the water right on me when I would lift the paddle on the side where the leash was attached during paddling. The drip ring definitely worked when I lifted the paddle up on the other side but that didn't overall help because of the leash. On pedal drives, I noticed that the other guys would get splashed on during launching/landing for the most part on calmer days and wouldn't be so wet during most of the day. Anyway, I was pretty active on NCKA back at least for a while. Life changed and so did priorities. I'm getting back into it now. I used to live in San Rafael and I found the awesome San Pablo bay sturgeon spot. There is a sixty foot drop on the GG side of the sisters islands. Big sturgeon hang there and then feed on the tide on a 15 foot ledge that is just to the left (if facing the pier - rock quarry side if it is still there). Anchor on this 15 foot ledge just next to the 60 foot water. First time I found this spot caught 3 6 foot sturgeon in a row! I live in Austin, TX so giving up my honey hole. Hope you check this out!

@@MooMooOutdoors Excuse my lame directions...Had to pull out my brain compass...The ledge is SW of sisters LOL. It drops on the other side as well but not as deep. Its probably 20 feet or so wide? I found this not because I was smart. I literally saw sturgeon rolling here one morning when I was headed out. I came back several times and caught keeper sturgeon as well as striper almost every time. Outgoing here as well seemed best. I fished all over SP bay and this is hands down best spot.
@CharlesB464 жыл бұрын
Had to add this. Prove me wrong fishing challenge. If you are stuck with shore fishing, right to south side of were Moo put in (literally like 100-200 yards), there is a shore spot with a bench. There is a ledge of about 6 feet but a walkdown to the water to land fish. Fish same setup as Moo with ghost, mud or even live grass shrimp. Here is the key. Fish last push of outgoing minus tide (spring/fall). There is a half hour window here (tide slows down but not slack). I fished this for 10 years and caught a striper and/or sturgeon every time! Why? Strong outgoing pulls all the crab etc. off shoreline. Fish wait until tide slows to got hunt in this shallow water with the buffet mother nature has provided. I caught my PB sturgeon (7 footer) in 12 inches pf water! Also is spot to the north of Moo (broken pier on point).

Did you keep up with the Revo OK? You need to improve your paddling technique to get the best out of that Yak - Maybe get a lesson. I am not a good enough paddler to give advice but noticed you don't have a "glue hand" and "grease hand". Look that up it is a simple tip that will improve your paddle stroke.
@MooMooOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
Yes I was able to keep up with Revo 13 just fine. The question is that if the Revo 13 can keep up with me once I become a better paddler 😁😁. I think you are referring to feathering. Most of the recent articles I read says it's more of a personally preference rather than efficiency. Works for some and doesn't work for others. I did play around with it more on the trip after this and I think I'm getting hang of the 45 degree feather.
@maldrury83134 жыл бұрын
@@MooMooOutdoors Hi Moo The technique is that your dominant hand remains with a firm grip on your paddle (Glue hand) The other hand has firm grip for the paddle stroke but then releases the firm grip (to a loose grip) to enable rotation of the paddle and the paddle stroke by the glue hand. Once you get the hand of it your paddling becomes more fluent and you engage core muscles more effectively.

Hi Moo, Great job on your catch! I have been watching your videos for a while, and was set to get a pedal kayak. Your purchasing a Stealth 480 has probably changed my mind. Now I am looking at a Stealth 480 or a Swell Scupper 14. It is nice to see that there are paddle SOTs being produced that aren't barges. I want to be able to launch through surf, and be able to land without having a yard sale. The hatch on the Stealth looks good, but I like the narrowness in front of the seat on the Scupper. Paddling in rough water means keeping the paddle in front of your body. Watch this guy: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jp-wlWRuqJeJpNE&feature=emb_title The paddle stroke he is doing is called a Duffek. Very efficient. Much better way to turn than using sweeps. It also puts you in a position so that you can brace against a wave. This requires a paddle that is flat or has some dihedral, not cupped like that wing paddle. I watch all of your videos (sometimes several times), and find them very informative. Thanks for making them, Doug
@MooMooOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
Uh oh. Did you persuade you away from a pedal kayak? hehe. Surf launching is not that big of a deal since you see what you are getting into but I always get nervous at the end of the day and simply hope the surf condition didn't get much worse. This kayak will give me a peace of mine that even if I get flipped, all my gear will be safe. Swell Scupper 14 was on top was my list along with Viking Profish Reload. Different type of paddles definitely have their pros and cons. I also want to try greenland paddle as well.
@indigofishermen4 жыл бұрын
Everything about fishing normally already follows all these b******* regulations. Literally in a kayak you're always 6 ft apart so there's no need to do anything special when kayak fishing to keep the distance. I like to remind everybody that if you want things to go back to normal, the strong will have to lead the way and maybe even fight for things like no mask. If you're scared stay home. Keep the videos coming. Maybe work on an intro or doing some voice over in your videos to give a little bit more pretext clarity and information. Keep up the good work and happy holidays!
