I think with Aegon he was raised as basically the 2nd son to Rhanerya as heir. He was never trained to rule. I think he is trying to be what his father was not to him and bringing his son with him to learn. He was a just king and tried to do what he thought was best for his subjects even in the books. Viserys was a fool to not change his heir when Aegon was born. He put in motion the events that led to the dance of the dragons and hence annihilation of dragons and near annihilation of his house. If he had named Aegon his heir as was the custom of Westros, dragons would have lived for centuries more. The same thing happened when Aegon IV legitimized his bastards on death bed and hence cause another war of succession called Blackfyre rebellion. When you mess with a clear line of succession you risk people fighting a war over it.

In the books, Blood and Cheese goes much differently. For starters, Rhaenyra has no part in any plan to kill Aemond or Jaehaerys, Daemon only sends her a letter that states “A son for a son, Lucerys will be avenged”. The two similarity sneak into the keep, although their target is never mentioned to be anyone specifically. Maegors Holdfast is where Aemond was, and it was too heavily guarded to get in, so B&C go to Alicent chambers. They slay her handmaid and tie Alicent up to her bed and wait for Helaena and her three children (Jaehaerys, Jaehaera, and Maelor), who visit Alicents chambers each night before bed. When Helaena enters, B&C take everyone hostage and tells Hel to choose which one of her sons is to die. Helaena begs them to kill her instead but they refuse. They tell her that if she does not choose, they will slay grape her daughter and slay everyone in the room. Eventually she chooses her younger son, Maelor; perhaps because she believes he is too young to understand understand or because Jaehaerys is the eldest and heir. Cheese, who is holding Maelor whispers to him, “You hear that little boy, your mamma wants you dead.” Blood strikes off Jaehaerys’s head instead. So in the books B&C is much, much worse

I'm really glad they didn't make Aegon is Joffrey. He does not evoke antipathy and I really feel sorry for him in his own way. And of course the murder scene was terrible, but strange at the same time. In the books there was no talk about Aemond; the order was to kill the child. Helaena chose the youngest son, but the killers laughed and killed the eldest (yes, the writers forgot that Aegon has three children.

In the book, Queen Alysanne Targaryen was disturbed and troubled by the fact that her dragon Silverwing would not go beyond the Wall. So much so that she wrote a letter to Jaehaerys about this. It might've alarmed them considering they know of the prophecy. Daenerys and her dragons going North of the Wall was a *creative decision* because the showrunners did not read Fire and Blood at that point because it was not published yet.

The ratcatcher kicks the dog to make it leave the castle because he doesn't want it to die. Probably less cruel ways of training a dog to "go home" but he doesn't seem like the sharpest. It's a terrier that helps him kill rats in the tunnels and lower levels and presumably it would be out of place, potentially noisy, and in danger up stairs. But I do think he kicks it because he wants it to live, and so it won't give them away.

I think Achara is predisposed to see Aegon only as a narcissist, and to be fair to her - the show has done nothing in season one to prove to her that Aegon can feel compassion and that he genuinely does want to be a good king. Hopefully she keeps her mind open for Aegon’s development this season. The coolest thing about Aegon is that he presents as Joffrey, but there’s an element of tragedy and a need to prove himself that Jaby has correctly honed in on.

It's the fault of how they chose to write Aegon in S1, tbf. They literally picked all the horrible possibilities for Aegon. And although i can guess why that was done the way it was, for a certain effect on S2, i must say that is lost on most of the watchers who just blindly follow Team Black for the narrative... Achara isn't alone in that prejudice. I really like seeing Aegon depicted this way, but I don't think majority will appreciate it as much. the choices the writers made for S1 had already tainted most watchers against Aegon for the sake of Nyra.

B&C was 💯 more cruel and heartbreaking in the book. Haelena offers herself first then ends up choosing Maelor to save Jaehaerys. Which is why she can't handle both grief and guilt after all of this is over and she can't look at Maelor after that. Also, i believe Alicent is in the room with them when it happens.

They blew the opportunity to make one of the most horrific and memorable moments on TV ever. On par with, and perhaps even surpassing, the red wedding. Instead we got a horrific moment, but one that I feel a lot of people watching will just forget by the time we get to season 3. I'll keep watching but it's a real shame.

I think your point on Aegon not paying attention to his father and learning to be king is a bit wrong because Aegon never thought he would be king and his father showed interest in Rhaenyra and showed very little interest in the boys after naming her his heir, so yes he didn't pay attention to his father and learn how to rule but he likely wasn't given the opportunity because he wasn't supposed to be the heir anyway.

Well, the book is written by unreliable narrators, so it's possible that the show's version of events is what actually happened, and the book's version is how it's remembered as what happened. Like, the public probably does think Aemond did what he did on purpose, and doesn't regret it.

helena is a bit of a weirdo. i feel bad for her cuz she was also FORCED to marry her brother who she despises by the way and have his children. i think she just doesn’t have that strong emotional bond with them as “normal” mothers do. plus, the shock of the whole situation happening and perhaps, already knowing it was going to happen in the first place

Cheese told Helaena that he'd "bleed" her and the children if she didn't do what he said, i.e. point out her son. Helaena had to choose between both of her children dying or keeping her daughter alive. In the book, Helaena begged them to kill her instead of her son, but they refused and insisted that she had to choose (in the book, Helaena had two sons as well as a daughter, she chose the toddler, Maelor, but they killed the six-year-old Jaehaerys, mercifully in one stroke of the sword, though still awful....).

@@tomytouru408 Aemond a spiteful and bitter who was threatening a child and Arrax hysterically, once they started flying and chase the boy mid fly during a raging storm. Dragons don't understand sport and jest and to think a dragon wouldn't attack in response to a threat on his life is not just insane. Aemond's actions were motivated by his anger and inferiority complex which lead him to wanting to terrorize Lucerys. He used an ancient predator, the largest dragon alive, to play a game of hunting and attacks 4 times so he can satisfy his frustration (it's like treating a pedestrian with a car). And now because of HIS imprudence he is a kinslayer, a man who is drunk on power by riding the largest dragon there is, knowing full well his opponent is no match for him, and his dragon is even more outmatched chasing, bullying and terrorising him.

I think some changes to the Blood and Cheese scene in the books were necessary because of how they set up Helaena's character in the show. First, she never lies, and she wouldn't pick her children strategically, because she doesn't care about those things. I like the part where the assassin realizes she's telling the truth, understanding that she's not the typical queen. Two, I'm not sure she understood the whole situation, which is why she first offers the necklace, and she looks surprised when they murder her son. Also, her being quiet and shocked rather than screaming and pleading fits her characterization. Three, she says in the episode that her son might not want to be king. In her own way, by letting her son die, and not picking between her children but simply being honest, she broke the cycle of her family putting politics and selfish wishes above loved ones. She simply lets fate take its course (a son for a son, innocent for an innocent), and considering what is to come, it’s arguably a mercy for the boy. Overall, while the scene is certainly less shocking, it respects Helaena's character. We would need a different Helaena to make the book scene work.

Rhaenyra's son was not burned but devoured with his dragon, while a wing of his dragon fell into the sea. Helena had the vision with the rats (the maid remembered Helena's warning when the assassin stood in front of her). I think she had already seen the death of her son and wanted to change the future. That's why she pointed directly to her son, hoping the killers wouldn't believe her. In her vision, she may have pointed to her daughter and the killers didn't believe her and killed her son. Now she knows that the future is fixed and cannot be changed. Another possibility would be that she immediately pointed to the son so that she wouldn't lose both children. If the killers had killed the daughter, her son would have died on the throne as king at the latest, if not earlier in the fight for it. A throne that her son may not have wanted anyway. At least that's what she told her husband. So she pointed to her son so that at least she wouldn't lose her daughter, because in this world women are less at risk.
