This video goes through the steps of product development for clothing i.e. creating clothes and turning sketches into final garments:
1. The ideation / fashion sketching
2. The specifications & definition of the correct proportions of the garment for production
3. The pattern, real size, one piece of paper for each piece of the skirt
4. Prototyping: the first test of the fabric, the design and the sewing
5. Grading: taking the pattern from size S to the other sizes while keeping the proportions nice
6. Ordering and producing the clothes.
Don’t forget to give this video your thumbs up & subscribe so you don’t miss any future video!
See you next week.
Take care,
Justine.

I love this. I would be interested in hearing more about how designs go from sketch to patternmaking. Do you sketch it and then pass your drawings off to someone who then makes that into a pattern? Or do the designers also make their own patterns? I know draping used to be a means of going about this, but my understanding is that people do not drape as much anymore. I don't know what they do now in place of it. You have such a great channel. Thank you so much for sharing all of your knowledge.

Hi Justine, I do have quite a few questions: 1) How do you choose the professionals that will do things for you (like creating the different sizes patterns) 2) How do you choose the company that takes your canvas and produces the skirt? What questions did you ask or which kind of background check did you do? Thank you for your videos because they are really interesting! :)

Do you use existing patterns or always create them from scratch? And what happens/do you do if you realise that something has gone wrong with the finished product when it gets delivered after production? These videos are soooo interesting! I think its realy fun to make clothing from idea to finnish and to realy knowing that the result is something that I myself will love to wear! Its hard to find clothes that are as colorful as I want them to be xD

Hi Justine! Great video! Could you make a video about how to use a printed fabric to mass produce a garment. how to get a certain part of the print at a certain side of the garment to make it look better. Do you decide the style of the garment first and then select a fabric or choose a print first and then design the garment, maybe a blouse or a dress. I haven't learnt fashion design professionally but i'm trying to design some clothes for myself. Thanks!

@justineleconte
@justineleconte 8 жыл бұрын
+sxcow hi! During the design development I do a kind of flat where I clearly show seams + pattern pieces + proportions but I do that by hand (faster). Then after prototyping, when I start preparing the tech packs with the guidance info for production, I switch to Illustrator and draw proper technical flats - they are also necessary to present the collection to retailers, here hand-drawn flats wouldn't do the job. 😃

Hi Justine. For my project I would like to make a dress cater for majority. I would like it to make it for all season, all body shape, and all ages not children but 20 so anyone can wear. From my research I gathered that a line dress would suit the crjteria. Is that true, or do you have any advice or recommend something. Thank you Justine.
@justineleconte
@justineleconte 8 жыл бұрын
+athena energy Shine Well... technically, I would say that any shape can fit all body types as long as you choose a boxy fit instead of a tight fit (I can't think of a shape that couldn't be adapted to any body type, right now... can you?). The question rather is to decide if your garment should fit rather slim or rather curvy women, for instance. A-line dresses are a good option for curvy women, while a shift dress is (in my opinion) the cutest option for slim women without too much curviness. It also depends on the occasion (e.g. daytime or evening event?), the age of the woman, and on the parts of her body that she likes (and the parts she would prefer to hide). In the end, it is your decision & everything can be "right" as long as the person feels good in the dress and you have given the whole process enough thoughts. I hope it helps!

I would agree with that. I am slender and what Justine would call rectangular. I look crap in boxy fit dresses. The only people who look decent in shift dresses are people with super long legs. Fit and flare dress wiht A line skirt and oval neckline works for everyone. Just make sure the fabric is not thin.

@justineleconte
@justineleconte 7 жыл бұрын
+Andrea Ryan I have my clothes produced at a small quantity, through a factory mostly doing things manually (e.g. fabric cutting is manual). To find a manufacture to work with, check B2B fairs in your country, search online, go through industry lists and ask your friends... There is no secret... And each designer (each collection) has different requirements do every time you need someone able to make what you want (skills and specific machines).

Why is there an XS but no XL? (I'd wager, people who wear XS are more rare than people who wear XL)
@justineleconte
@justineleconte 7 жыл бұрын
exactly. Looking at people worldwide, there are more XS people. Having said that, I should ideally have XL and XL on top of the current range - it is a matter of of reaching the minimum production quantities...
@justineleconte
@justineleconte 7 жыл бұрын
* XL and XXL
@Jemima1377
@Jemima1377 7 жыл бұрын
Are you sure that is still valid? (My original comment actually assumed it the exact other way round: more XL than XS) I mean, statistically, all over the world, that might be true, but in countries that will realisticly buy from your or similar lines? I personally don't think so. Because while in the modeling world, sizes became smaller and smaller over time (size zero and stuff, you know), I think in the real world, people actually tend to have bigger dress sizes in recent years. (Isn't every scientiest saying, people's weight in the 'developed western world' in general is going up? That has to manifest in dress sizes as well, no?) So if I had to choose dress sizes to be produced, I'd probably rather go bigger than smaller. I'd guess that there are more people looking for a well cut skirt in XL or XXL (or even bigger) than there are looking for it in XS. And those smaller sizes already have pretty much every brand to choose from anyways... ^_~ (Also: you can buy an item of clothing that's a tad too big for you and downsize/tailor it for it to fit you properly, but upsizing is pretty much impossible.) But that's a general thing I keep thinking, not specifically about your collection... ^_^ (btw: the thing you say, about upsizing having to keep in mind proportions, sadly isn't something all clothing manufacturers live by - there are those shirts that - in bigger sizes - become dresses, because apparently a bigger waist also means, you have to grow half a meter taller... ^_~)

Biggest fan....I looooove you!!!! Je vous adore!!! Vos videos ont changés ma vie. You are so generous with information! I am a self taught fashion designer, I create looks/silhouettes by mixing elements of different cultures that I have immersed myself in....( African, European, Asian, Middle Eastern etc...) I call my style fusion in fashion. My problem is, I do not sew and I am ok in illustration but I can convey my ideas to my tailors....I am really trying to find ways of improving myself. I currently live in Bethesda and there are no fashion schools around here. I have taken courses here and there but I still feel incomplete. What do you advise. My instagram account is Mahonitiri, je vous prie de jeter un coup d'oeil et me donner votre opinion s'il vous plait. I wish you good luck in all your ventures and I love your smile!!! Merci mille fois.

I am greatly enjoying all your videos about fashion! May I offer a piece of constructive criticism? The word "sew" (both in present and past tense) is pronounced like "so", not "saw". "Sew" rhymes with "blow" and "show". :) Your English is excellent - such a tough language to learn!
