I loved Jaguar’s response to making the car go quicker: “best put more oil in lad, here’s a shorter dipstick to make it all better.” John Noakes would have been proud. Anyway, another interesting video, Damien. Many thanks for all your hard work in making it. Much obliged!

Nick, quite a funny and interesting story I thought. I believe the Jag engineers where trying to be clever and run with less oil than a normal V8. Just took it a bit too far without baffles in the sump. Cheaper to add litre of oil and shorten the dipstick than adding baffles in the sump and retro fitting. Thanks for your comment and continued support regard Damian

@@ODRModurol Hiya Damien, yes I agree! A litre of oil is a much cheaper fix. In a sense, of course, they’re right. Ultimately, it’s the oil that does the job and even if you do add baffles you won’t know whether they are effective until the warranty claims stop (or not). I think your videos are fantastic. Cheers!

Very interesting. Do you think we could have a video on how to check & replace gearbox oil?

Your XK8 videos are excellent -very detailed, authoritative research; 'a proper job' to get to the bottom of the issue. I have a MY2000 XKR 4.0. The car's Owner's Handbook has a manufacturer's insert page (JJM 10 16 18/001 which covers the material in Technical Bulletin 100-17) and the car has the 'new' dipstick i.e. XR83-6752-AC Is this dipstick exactly the same as XR82806 ? Having measured my dipstick, I can confirm that it is NOT the same dimensions as the 2 dipsticks depicted at 8:20 in your video e.g. the metal blade is 587mm long, and the distance between Min and Max is 27mm. There is 526mm of metal blade to the Max mark. My car has the 20" wheel upgrade so can I use either of the above dipsticks? What should the oil capacity of my car be (I have confirmed that it DOES have an oil cooler and it is in the 'lower' position i.e. at the bottom of the radiator). I've noticed that the oil level always shows much lower on the side of the dipstick that is towards the engine, but I can't really fathom why this should be happening. e.g. it shows 20% above Min on the one side but 100% above Min (i.e. on Max) on the side towards me. Any ideas?

@CC-zm9fw, thank you for your feedback and support. Question 1 - Are XR83-6752-AC and XR82806 the same? Answer 1 - Yes the dip lengths should be the same. Question 2 - The measurement is not the same as the two on the video, why? Answer 2 - Good question. The two on the video are my original length and the 4.2 litre length dipsticks. The 4.2l has a longer dipstick entry tube therefore longer. Hence there are three length of dipsticks. Original, High performance and 4.2L. PS thank you for sharing your measurements. Possible going to update the video with this included. Question 3 - Can I used either dipstick Answer 3 - XR83-6752-AC and XR82806 are practically the same. Question 4 - What is the oil capacity? Answer 4 - In theory 8.3 litres. Question 5 - Dipstick reads different on each side. Answer 5 - Sorry, no idea. Hope that helps, thank you for your sharing your cars details, regards Damian

I’ve always considered the hatched area to be the optimum area for the oil to be. Otherwise the hatch would go right upto maximum.

Andy K, the reality with this engine is it doesn't matter as long as you aren't going around corners like Lewis Hamilton, Thanks for the comment, regards Damian

Another Golden nugget Damian , just changed my oil in my 1997 2 hole dipstick car put 7 litres in because I have an oil cooler checked the dipstick and I am 1cm above top hole which threw my mechanic and me. I have watched your video and I now think 1cm above top mark is ok. please can you reassure me before I go on my big trip Thursday. Best regards Richard
@ODRModurol3 жыл бұрын
Richard, sounds like you are safe with 1cm above old style dipstick. You are probably about where the high performance dipstick would show as max. The bottom of the engine has a baffle plate and 7 litres doesn’t sound excessive even with a small amount retained in the oil ways etc. Hope that helps regards Damian

My dipstick has actually part nr. XR83-6752-AE (so not AC). Do you know, what could be the difference? I also have vehicle specifications handbook from 7/2004, where it says that my XK with 4.2 SC engine needs 7.0 liters of engine oil (7.4 US Quarts), but your video says 8.6? I know you said that due to oil cooler sitting lower, its not possible to drain it all out, but still, that is quite difference. I also checked older invoices from previous owner. Oil was changed regularly in authorized Jaguar dealer, they always put 7.5 liters of oil. So I am quite confused.

JL, Sorry it is a bit confusing. Sorry for the delay I have done a bit of checking before replying. According to the Jaguar workshop specification for MY2003 4.2L cars (NA and Supercharger) the initial fill is 8.6 litres and the service fill is 7.0 litres. This is specified on page 480 of 1920 of the 2003 workshop manual. A pdf copy is available at 'tothegarage' with this link :- drive.google.com/drive/folders/1XIAnG8U0l8EP02RnHt2s456svI_nwv3- . Assume your dipstick is just slightly different as they made the dipstick location tubes at a different lengths on the later cars. But the volume of oil and actual fill level is the same. By MY2003 all cars came with oil coolers. This and the engine itself holds the extra 1.6 litres of oil. Thinking about it you only end up changing 81% of the oil with each oil service. Its even worse when servicing the gearbox as the torque converter holds oil too. Reference the Jaguar dealers charging for an extra half litre, I think its just them pushing the envelope of what they can get away with. Recommend always using an independent Jaguar specialist. Hope that helps, thanks for the comment regards Damian

@@ODRModurol thank you for the answer and link to workshop manuals. I googled for part number of my dipstick and it looks like its from XF models (strange) so I will measure it to be sure that the lenght matches the correct one (8:22 in your video).
