I've been getting into twitter/reddit arguments about Bryce's redemption arc. People seem to think if you don't like it you just didn't 'get' what they were going for. No, I got it. Bryce isn't a cartoon villain (even though they wrote him that way for 2 seasons). People are complex and life isn't black and white. Fantastic. But no amount of crying to mommy or daddy issues is EVER going to make me empathise with a serial rapist, are you joking? A lot of people have difficult lives and don't resort to hurting others. People are more mad this season that Ani was nosy than the fact Bryce raped 10 women. If a serial rapist's redemption arc doesn't start with getting out of prison- preferably after serving several decades- I'm not interested.

What they're doing is basically supporting the idea that mental disorders and trauma can excuse horrible and inexcusable *choices* (when it's actually that mental disorders and trauma EXPLAIN those choices, not excuse them, and them supporting the opposite both raises the stigma with mental disorders and trauma survivors but also literally supports people who used their trauma as an excuse for their horrible actions) and also backtrack any of their "progress" in helping the mentally ill and rape victims by instantly shaming them and shoving them under the bus just because people gave good reasons as to how they shouldn't be supported. Yikes.

NO one is excusing behavior. The whole point of 13 reason is to show that people are (Human Beings) neither good nor bad, who make choices and those choices have action and consequences. The choice of suicide, rape, murder, forgiveness, choices to help or hurt those around us. The whole point is empathy and understanding. understand why bryce raped Hanna, understand why hannah killed her self, understand why the person who murder bryce killed him. This show is soo progressive, yes the script sometimes is a little cringe but its doing something that has never been done before. Its not sugar coating shit, I grew up watching shows talk about rape, suicide, drug addiction. But in today's shows when ever someone depressed the character goes " im really sad" no your fucking depressed and thats not something to tip toe around. " oh I was sexually assaulted" No you were raped. And the facts of this society is that rapist and murder learn better. We dont want to admit it but some people who make those choices actually feel bad for those choices. They do stuff to try and make up for it. this show is unapologetic for showing the real world and its issue. As someone who has depression and suicidal tendencies, who tried to kill themselves before It was a breath of fucking fresh air to watch a show like this.

Explaining the nature of behavior isn't making excuses for anything. That's a bullshit perspective. How can you prevent behavior if you don't understand why/how it develops? That's the entire reason we've spend decades studying serial killers, but nobody is pardoning their actions....

I think the issue is you're seeing it as excusing when everyone related to making it actively goes out of their way to say No, we are NOT excusing it, we are just EXPLAINING the context behind it and showing how it's not just one person who's to blame, it's their parents, it's their family, it's their friends, it's society for putting people in these positions as well. Everyone had chances to change things. Everyone has a role. When someone dies, even the worst person ever, it's tragic. The chance for someone to develop into a good, healthy human just ended. Forever. It's sad. For some people, maybe a lot of people, there's no way they can "get better" from the shitty things they do. But for a lot of them, they could. For a lot of them, there are underlying issues and if everyone could sit down without any bias and without any hate and just listen to everyone around them, maybe we could get a more understanding world where EVERYONE has a chance to get better. That would be beautiful.

Ok so, I’m a victim of sexual abuse as well as a suicide attempt. I watched the entirety of the show, even though it was incredibly triggering. And the thing is, for a while, I defended it. It’s sad but I wanted to hold onto the idea that the show was good because it’s so rare for rape to be portrayed on tv. Like it’ll appear but it’s never shown as being a huge deal. And I was so happy to have representation, to be able to look at Jessica’s growth and be hopeful. I know it sounds stupid but I really wanted to like the show. Asides from the whole redemption arc, what really pissed me off was that like “if you want to be a victim you can stay here, or you can join the real survivors”. The words survivor vs victim are very symbolic to those who’ve experienced assault or abuse. And it really pissed me off to see it being thrown around so lightly. Typically, it’s the person’s choice on how to identify, I see it as steps, at first you identify as a victim but eventually you can call yourself a survivor, not when someone else tells you to but when you feel ready. I still identify as a victim, not because I’m weak or not trying hard enough, but because I’m still in a stage where I can’t call myself a survivor, I haven’t stopped having nightmares and I still am suicidal. Anyways, this is just to say that if you ever want to talk about this show and my perspective on it you can ask me, I don’t know if it would be valuable, but sometimes hearing a victim’s opinion can be helpful. I really wanted to have a show where I was represented and it led me to grasping onto this shit show for way to long. It honestly just sucks living life wanting to die and feeling guilty for having your uncle abuse you while tv shows never show that, it just increases the sense of not belonging. Obviously not every teenager is a victim of abuse but it would be cool to see representation
@qu3enpersephone
@qu3enpersephone 5 жыл бұрын
Just to complete the previous comment, I identified really heavily with Hannah in the first season. I had recently chopped all my hair off and tried to kill myself. So seeing that on screen gave me a sense of not being alone. Obviously she ends up killing herself but being able to go through that journey with her ended up kind of giving me hope. It was still super triggering but I felt so legitimized by seeing myself onscreen. I love teen shows and was obsessed with PLL and glee, but I could never relate to any of the typical high school stuff. I never had relationship drama because I was isolating myself from everyone, I didn’t have a lot of typical high school experiences in the first place because I was so sick in 9th and 10th grade that I was homeschooled and spent most of the time in the hospital. So seeing something I could finally relate to really made me feel real.

It's probably because once one of their shows picks up fame, they tend to keep coming out with new seasons for the shows in little amount of time. Example: Voltron, that show had like 6-7 episodes for at least 4 of the seasons and all of them came out in a short frame of time. Although, this doesn't apply to all Netflix originals. Example: Stranger Things.

I don’t watch 13 reasons why so I don’t know much about this character but don’t you think it’s possible for people to realize that what they’re doing is wrong. From what I’ve heard no one came forward and told him that what he was doing was wrong and even if they did he might not have realized that what he was doing was serious. Look at the little boy that was having sex with his little sister he had no idea what he was doing was wrong, should he be punished for not knowing the laws of society and understanding them? I guess because where you live (I’m assuming America) you have jails instead of rehabilitation centers where they make the criminals or guilty persons understand the depth of the crime they’ve committed. You aren’t a psychologist because you would have never made an ignorant statement like that. Again I am not in anyway defending rape or rapists but it pisses me of with this level of ignorance in this comment section.

Khaleesi Fuego the character felt no remorse after a girl killed herself after he raped her and she specifically said that he was one of the reasons for her suicide. Then he tried to silence others who wanted to speak out about his behavior. Also, since when is it possible for a rich white educated 17 year old to not know that it’s a crime to drug girls, then gangbang them while they are unconscious and make Polaroid photos of himself penetrating her unconscious body... You are the one being ignorant because you spoke on this topic without knowing the storyline. After he has been gaslighting, manipulating and ridiculing his victims in court in the final episode of the second season, we are introduced to a remorseful character and you don’t get any explanation as to why he is all of a sudden not a psychopathic piece of trash. It just sends a dangerous message to young girls because it implies that guys like that can actually be good guys and they even made him the romantic interest of the friend of his rape victim. It’s just gross🤮🤮🤮🤮

sortasofi I’m sorry if I misread your comment but you didn’t specifically call out Bryce Walker. You said “since when do Serial Rapists feel remorse...” no where in that statement did you say Bryce Walker. Also please don’t assume he was a psychopath or sociopath, he could have just never known that what he was doing wrong. Let’s say you were to go to North Korea and do something that you weren’t aware was illegal, does that make you evil? No it means you had no idea what you were doing was wrong. It’s like saying the Caribs were wrong because they allegedly practiced cannibalism, which would be wrong because the concept of good and wrong are Social Constructs which constantly change. I’m not condoning rape but I think 13 reasons why should have shown it a bit more from his perspective, there’s always three or two sides of a story (depending on the story).

I think Jess and Justin getting back together was horrible, and made me cringe. Choosing to tolerate, or embrace the toxicity of your relationship doesn’t make the love any realer or make it more romantic. They should’ve mutually decided to let each other go given all the bullshit that transpired between them. Deciding not to because they ‘love each other’ is toxic within itself. Dregrassi next class was a ridiculous show that had a lot of issues by itself, but one thing they managed to not fail completely was the school shooter arc, because (at least from what I gather from my memory) they never gave Hunter a tragic ass backstory to make his actions "justifiable", but especially because after the prom (which I don't think he actually attended), he was sent to a psychiatric clinic for a while and has psychological assistance throughout the rest of the show (or at least the rest of the season)

I hate so much that that is something that happens. It is extremely disrespectful to those who are really suffering; I was the victim of sexual assualt and have since been diagnosed with PTSD, depression, and anxiety. I have gotten to the point where I am open about what happened to me as a way to raise awareness and help other people who are suffering or want to better understand how to help their loved ones. At one point, while discussing my past with a girl who was better trying to understand what a victim went through, she told me that I was "lucky to have gone through that" and claimed to be jealous of the fact that I had gone through abuse and struggles with my mental health. It was disgusting.

One thing that I don’t see anyone mentioning: the police not charging Zach with anything! When Zach thought he killed Bryce and confessed to BEATING THE LIVING HELL OUT OF HIM to police and the police were like “oh well he actually drowned so you can go home”, i literally laughed OUT LOUD If he hadn’t done that, Bryce would’ve been able to get out of the water and wouldn’t have drowned for fuck’s sake. Zach admitted to what would be considered first degree assault or attempted murder. My comment was kinda emotion-driven, so I want to clarify, what irritated me was that they chose a motive that made the shooter as sympathetic as possible, when that's often not the case in reality. I obviously don't know every motive ever, but they made a deliberate choice to ignore the more common, or at least more well-known, examples, to instead put forth a narrative of the potential murderer being the real victim. Everyone seems to agree on that, though, so I'm glad that got across.

The first season actually made sense, as it was based on a single book. But once that season had ended, they REALLY should have stopped, since they had said everything that needed to be discussed.

Me too, while they were trying to make a point that real suicide is gory and unglamorous, it might have worked had they not showed it in all its glory. Even worse, Netflix edited the bath suicide scene TWO WHOLE YEARS after complaints from viewers, but it was too far, too late in some ways.

There's also a massive difference in the setting of shows like 13 reasons and GOT and how redemption arcs work. 13 reasons is supposed to be realistic and set in a real high school. Call the police in reality when murder is on the table. GOT is fantasy where magic exists and people run around with swords. Murder is not as big a deal in that kind of setting and there are fewer consequences. Redemption arcs only work if they can be moralized by other characters.

The show marketed itself as being socially aware and it's "aim" was to discuss suicide when in reality it glorified the revenge aspect and created controversy. Then the show seemingly (I say this as I haven't watched seasons two or three) turned into a more generalised teen drama like Riverdale or others of the genre. I didn't even know season three had been released until I saw someone on twitter discussing it almost five days after it was released. I just feel like it's twisting and turning to be something that it wasn't originally set out to be.

I get no one likes angsty emo poets saying everyone lies don’t mean they have to hate the actress, seriously who does that, yeah I hate admiral sanda from voltron legendary defender but I don’t say it to the voice actor. Also spinel from Steven Universe the movie has a best villain with sad and redemption arc than Bryce and she’s a cartoon. Also hope no one sh*t talks bex, seriously she been thought enough from the toxic fans from voltron legendary defender about liking people’s ship fan art over a character that yeah she ain’t gonna let a dead guy just die. Also why care about freaking Bryce?! Yeah I hate him that guy was a dick, but they could have had everyone heal from it and think about how to move on. Also I don’t watch this show, but seen too much clips and people’s complaints about it. In honest yeah the beginning should have ended and that’s that. Even if Netflix pushes that show in my face I rather watch rockos modern life movie about a 20 something or 30 who wants his 90s cartoon back. Crap that’s me. 😐 Also HBO Euphoria has better teen problems than this.
