Carla shares the challenges faced when living in Walthall County Mississippi, a dry county. Over half the counties in Mississippi are dry, some, apparently, drier than others.

Here's a story I will never forget. It happened in Birmingham AL, not MS I know but still. I swear this is true. I spent a week in Birmingham, attending a training class for work. During the week, I decided to stop at a 'package store', as the call them, and pick up a 6 pack of beer. As the lady behind the counter finished ringing up my purchase, she went to bag the sixer. Being the type of person to not waste stuff, and not needing a bag for something that already had a handle, I said, "That's alright, I don't need a bag". The woman look at me like I had just grown a second head which had then insulted her mother and in astonishment she replied, (and I will never forget every single word) "Well, you just have to have a bag! Ya see, we love jesus here and jesus doesn't want the little children to see what you have in this here bag". Somewhat taken aback by this "logic" I asked, "Does the bag really fool them? Because, if these children can see a person walk into a liquor store, walk out with a black bag, and have no idea what is in the bag, then you have a education problem on your hands"

At one time, Boyle County Kentucky was dry as well. I lived there. Back in the day, it was fun to drive to Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, a wet county, purchase Millers pony beers by the case, then sell them for a dollar a piece to the old guys sitting on park benches near the Boyle County court house,.

I grew up in New Orleans, where you can drink 24/7. I went to college where the bars closed and liquor sales stopped at 2:00am. Where do you think we were at 1:55am? A convenience store buying ten cases of beer. Incredibly dumb laws, and the college cops who enforced them were my college experience.

Back in the 1970s, my old man would drive across the Mississippi River to go to bars in Illinois where the drinking age was 18. In Missouri, his home state, the drinking age was 21. It was roughly a one to two hour drive but for a night of burgers, fries, beer and the tasty food of Fast Eddie's (a local favorite), he made the trip...and so did everyone else.

I remember Biloxi from my Air National Guard days in the early 80's. Just about the entire town was off limits after dark. The locals had bumper stickers that read "Keep Biloxi clean. I travel to Ohio on route 70 often. One of the first exits in Ohio is Quaker city. I stopped to get gas there. I noticed that there was no beer in the coolers. I asked why, they told me it was a dry county. Mind you the gas station Was tied to a huge fireworks distributor packed full of explosives and on the opposite side of the interstate there is a massive porn shop. Heaven forbid you have a beer while blowing stuff up and watching porn.

I don't know if this is still true or not, but back in 1970, Dallas was a patchwork of wet and dry areas. It was quite possible to buy, say, beer at one place and not be able to a block over. It was nuts.

I was stationed at Ft. Sill in Oklahoma in 1964-65. this was before pop-top beer cans. If you wanted to buy a six pack of beer you had to go to a liquor store. They only sold liquor. You had to go to a different store to buy a can opener. Bars could only sell beer with 3.2% alcohol, no wine, nothing else. If you wanted to a nightclub you had to go to a liquor store to buy a bottle, then go to a "club" where you bought a "membeship" (usually one dollar) then order "set-ups" which consisted of a paper bucket of ice and some soft drinks. Utterly insane.

I would have put money on there beng nothing funny about a dry county until just now. 20-some years ago i found out about dry counties the hard way one Sunday morning while on holiday in Boston. From Ireland. We'd spent the night before in the city having a great time (*after* finding out 'bring ID' wasn't a joke) including a brew pub where we drank raspberry beer and smoked cinnamon cigarettes. With no phones to inform or steer ourselves with we did what seemed natural - let's keep walking, there's bound to be a pub around here somewhere. Worst Sunday ever.

I was in Lubbock in 1976. A Dry, University town. Couple of bars had a liquor licence - Main Street Saloon was packed with the over-21 students. But, you could possess alcohol. So, every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening there was a procession of cars and trucks driving out to The Strip, right on the city boundary. Case after case dropped in trunks and flat beds, and then back to town. The Strip guys must have been Killing it out there.

Fellow Mississippians we shouldn't tolerate this kind of injustice to plague our fine state in which we live.So if you live in a dry county ,its your constitutional right to fo vet some booze and break that unjust law.If a law is unjust its your duty to break it or change it.Or both which ever comes first..So get your ass to the store and get brown bag of illegal booze take to your dry county county and drink that shit and show them whats what.

Oh man, Lewis, I've got one even better than a dry county! I live here in Oklahoma. Prohibition ended in 1933. Oklahoma accepted the 21st amendment in 1959, 26 years later. In Oklahoma, there are still dry counties, but we even went a step further. There are a few counties, where there are bars, but they don't serve any alcohol. You have to bring your own. So at the end of your long work week at your shitty job, and you're ready to knock back a few with your friends, first you have to go to a county that has a liquor store, you buy your bottle, then you go to the bar and drink up with your friends. What baffles me is the question that I'm sure most people reading this comment are asking right now: If you have to go get your own alcohol, then WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU BOTHER GOING TO THE BAR?!??!?! Just invite your friends over to your house, and drink there! You even have full use of the tv, so you can watch whatever the fuck you wanna watch without the hassle of the bartender giving you shit, because, go fucking figure, you ARE the bartender. Drink your vodka in the comfort of your own home and just get shit hammered while watching Black Mirror for the 10th time on Netflix! No need for the middle man of an alcohol-free bar that serves no other purpose than you aren't in any hurry to go back home yet.

When I moved into this one apt building smoking wasn't even in question. Four years later the landlord renovated the building; after tenants had two choices, 1 sign a new lease (despite being due or not) to agree to no longer smoke in their home OR be homeless. I smoke and put in a 30 day however, while there the onsite manager played "Smoke Police" going as far to get on the round and smell at tenants front doors cracks. Wait, also in the new lease, tenants were prohibited from burning incense. And yes, one county here in NC is completely dry and others and some variation of dry. I understand a landlord has the right to make their building smoke free however, DON'T switch in the middle of a lease more so without proper warning of said switch. I feel anything "legal" should not be prohibited in an American's got damn home!

I recall that but I can't pinpoint where that section of TO was. Somewhere in the west end, i.e. near High Park is my guess from a vague memory. I do remember you couldn't even pick up your drink and carry it with you to talk with friends at a different table. This was in Ontario in general. You had to wave over a server or bouncer and they would carry the drink for you and place it on the table you pointed out. The same returning to your own table. I also remember "Ladies" and "Gents" entrances and divided off sections. You can still see two identical doors visible on the outside of some old establishments, especially in small out of the way villages. Meanwhile, I remember bar hopping in New Liskeard and Cobalt and if we were still able, scooting over to Quebec at 1 a.m. because their bars were open until 3 a.m.

I’m still suspicious that “dry” countries are only dry and illegal for those who “don’t belong” I start with the most severe scenario and work my way back.

If I am understanding the dynamics of this area properly, you might conceivably have counties that are OK with weed, but will bust you for alcohol possession... I find it fascinating how wildly different this area is from the rest of the country at large...

If it's illegal to have alcohol... They could just go somewhere else. That alcohol proabition sounds dangerous, it sounds like it could increase the chances of them driving drunk, because they have to leave their town.

Some Kansas dry counties. Open container law, drive down the dirt road and throw the dead can out the window...just not in front of the cop. There is a driving range/Golf Club. $1 annual membership with paper card. All you want, promise not to drink it until you get home. They will swear you drank it on the club premisses.

Blue laws are every where in this country . They are not just about alcohol . They have laws about selling Cars and many other things ,adult books ,gambling on so on. Most are only enforced on Sunday is what this guy is not telling you. It is not in anyway just Mississippi or the south . New York ,PA. Ohio and even California have old crazy laws on the books. Law in Florida says you can not hang wet underwear out to dry, or take a shower in the nude. A fun fact about alcohol is that over 80% of emergency room cases involve drink directly and indirectly. Even most snake bite cases are because of being drunk.
