The Fast Lane Truck So, now we know that the EPA does a lot of “copy and paste”, Dodge kept quiet about it and GM owned up to it...lay-offs to follow... Ps. Based on a few of my friends experiences over the last 20+ years...I wouldn’t buy a Chrysler/Dodge product on a bet.

The big3 cant have that ... @@eliteexposure5594 "Especially now" is the polar opposite of the truth. Ford and GM were trash in the 80s through about 2005. Now they're good. GM and Ford trucks are very similar and both beat anything Toyota has to offer. GM cars are industry average, comparable to Honda - the only Honda that is noteworthy for reliability is the Civic, Honda hasn't gotten worse, but everyone else except Chrysler and Fiat got better. Ford cars are very good, nearly as good as Toyota. But Toyota cars aren't the best anymore, that goes to Hyundai/Kia - actually it's Porsche, but it's not fair to compare them.

@Brian Taylor Most people dont realize how many Ford and Chevy vehicles today have turbos. I would bet half of whats sold no less than a 1/4. Hell, my wifes escape has them. Turbos are a very reliable system. They SHOULD be considered however a LRU(Line Replacable Unit). At some point they will have to be changed. Must be aware of that and place it in mx costs. The old school push rods are cheaper to maintain yes, but look at the advantages you get with that system. Put the Chevy and Dodge on 35s with a 410 rearend and you will see a big difference.
@jessaphillips2846
@jessaphillips2846 5 жыл бұрын
First generation EcoBoost engines are getting well over 150k on the original turbos. Everyone is forgetting that all of these companies have been working with turbos in their diesel trucks for years and they have the technology to make the turbos reliable. It’s way better than the turbo cars in the 80’s where you couldn’t get 100k miles out of a turbo. Considering the rpms and heat that turbos endure (150,000+ rpms) the reliability is amazing. Yeah it’s an added expense but it’s one you’ll probably only pay once in your ownership, maybe twice. I wouldn’t consider replacing turbos as a real expense concern, even with the high output version.

Results like this are what moved me from being 25 year Mopar guy to Ford. Dodge just isn't very honest about some important things. And their engineering is quirky AF. 1. Power costs fuel. Whichever of these trucks you hop into and stomp the gas on, fuel efficiency is going right down the toilet. It's not due to brand loyalty, it's due to PHYSICS. 2. so... if you bought any of these vehicles based on fuel efficiency, you bought the wrong vehicle. 3. This is totally the kind of comparison I would do. I'm obsessed with my Mustang GT's gas mileage...

@danielstark8258
@danielstark8258 3 жыл бұрын
@@wantsomemor6513 lmao, you’re welcome to spend more money on gas in your dodge, getting the exact same things as in a chevy. Some business rely on trucks and fuel economy can lead to thousands of dollars of expenses every year, and in a fleet, such as construction contracting where you have a few hundred trucks under the same company, that can literally lead to hundreds of thousands of dollars of difference, and if you are too smooth in the head to understand that then take your money and flush it down the toilet or burn it in the fire because when you buy that ram that’s literally what you’re doing. Either you’re too young to understand or you don’t have a business that requires a truck. Either way, you’re ignorant and if you don’t care why are you watching this video in the first place
@danielstark8258
@danielstark8258 3 жыл бұрын
@777mikmik honestly I can excuse your mindset if you’re 11 but like god damn, trucks are tools and if your tool is causing unexpected costs, you shouldn’t own that tool. Be my guest though, a 5mpg difference is literally as much as 2 grand a year if you’re driving 30k+ miles a year. I’m a construction contractor who’s in the market for a new truck, I’m about to put a down payment on a 2020 LT trail boss, I have a life outside of contracting and I love to be off road, but I’m also driving over 200 miles some days. If I was to get nowhere close to rated mpg for example 22 down to 17, that could cost me $10 dollars a day, now throw that out over a 6 day work week for 5 weeks straight. $300. that’s a biweekly payment right there, and all because some duche bag up in ram decided to cheap out and not provide legitimate ratings. That could and would effect my business, that $300 could be the difference between eating or not. Lucky to have life handed to you on a silver plater, that’s not how it is in the real world and for some people, $300 can make a significant difference

Let me get this straight, FCA can sell a lifted version of its truck with big off-road tires on it, and still use the EPA numbers for a different truck without a lift and with normal, all season tires? How is that even allowed? It is not exactly a mystery what happened here, that truck should not be using the same mpg numbers as a truck that hasn't been significantly modded for off-road use by the factory.

I own a 2018 Raptor supercrew. Had it almost a year with about 14k miles. I average between 17.2-18.0 for combined mileage which I am fairly pleased with. It's what the sticker said I should get, plus its about the same mileage I got on my last truck (2012 F150 Supercrew XLT 3.5 Ecoboost 4x2 on stock tires.) I think they answered their own question about the Ram mileage in the very beginning when they said the EPA uses the same ratings as the other non-Rebel trucks with the lower ride height, smaller tires etc. Those additions would certainly effect efficiency and how Ram got away with using those numbers is beyond me. All in all I bet they ditch the Ram for a Gladiator or the Ranger Raptor in the next year or so? I just don't see Roman sticking with the Ram for as long as the previous Raptor unless he's contractually obligated because of the discount he received. Hopefully they negotiated a minimum term/length up front. Maybe i'm just a biased Ford fan?

They put all this tech into these trucks to increase MPG over the last 20 years (VV-T, Cylinder deactivation, Turbo, 10-speed transmission, overhead cam, Hybrid Technology, ECO system, Air dynamics, Lighter weight body and frame, etc...) and there basically getting the same MPG has a truck from the early 2000's. Granted that they make a lot more power (100--150HP), but you would think that a consistent 20+ MPG highway would be achievable by now....

I always kind of ignored those EPA numbers, just because they always seem to be higher than what you normally get on trucks. I own an old Durango that is rated at 14/19, but I only get like 9/15. I also own an old 5.0 Explorer that is rated at 14/18 but it only gets like 8/13. I usually look at the EPA numbers and subtract 4 or 5mpg, and that is what it usually is. Also, from what I understand about that e-torque system on the Dodge, it isn't supposed to do anything on the highway other than charge the battery.

GREAT COMPARISON GUYS !! It would be interesting to see if the non-Rebel 4x4 models achieve 22mpg on the highway. If so, then it was a mistake on Ram's part not to have the EPA rate the Rebel model separately. An EPA rating of 18-19 mpg on the highway for the Rebel would not be bad, although the best result the Rebel got in this test was 17.9. I highly doubt it would gain more than one MPG after so-called break-in. I don't think break-in means much these days.

I owned a 2016 Ram 1500 4x4 Lonestar for over a year. Had it on numerous road trips. The thing never averaged close to the EPA ratings. It averaged about 3mpg less. Although on the highway it would reach over 20mpg, no etorque, no nobby tires or lift though. I think the main reasoning was mine had a 3.92 rear end. I noticed the mpg ratings at the dealerships for other Ram's were the same regardless of which rear axle ratio they had. So perhaps that's what's throwing the numbers off for the Rebel? I believe all Rebel's have the 3.92 rear end.

What’s more to ask for, calculated the trail boss will cost me just about 6k a year in gas, with those numbers from the real world test in the ram, I’d be looking at almost 7k, some weeks I can be driving 200 miles a day, that means having a truck that gets rated fuel economy is very important

As the owner of a 19' Ram Rebel Hemi eTorque 4X4 with 3.92 rear axle, I can tell you not to hold your breath waiting to get good gas mileage. Because it isn't going to happen. I'm down in 'flat country' (Florida), my Rebel has just over 5,000 miles on it now and I drive it like an old grandpa. I've done one round trip from Florida to Kentucky - all highway miles with cruise control set at 70-72 mph. I got 17.5 mpg average between the trip up and down. In the city, the eTorque is actually very helpful. I'm at about 16-16.5 mpg city now and that I can live with. But the highway mileage is dismal, especially since I've been driving diesel trucks for the last 7 years. I absolutely love the truck, but I find it very disingenuous of Ram not to separate out the Rebel 4x4 from the standard EPA rating on the Monroney. First, it's the same old 5.7L Hemi it's always been. If it didn't get 20+ mpg in the past, it isn't going to get it now. You have the axle ratio working against you with the 3.92 and the engine running 300 rpm higher than it would if it was a 3.42 or 3.55 rear end, with bigger, wider, heavier, more aggressive tread tires with high rolling resistence not helping any. You don't have the wind-cheating, aerodynamic assistance from a front end chin spoiler, no radiator louvres that close, etc. etc. The truck will, at best, maybe work it's way up to 18.5/19 mpg if you are lucky.

I did a cat back and K&N drop in filter with a soft roll up cover after about 1200 miles. After about 60,000 miles , the mpg dropped back down to 16-17. Not sure why, I traded out of it before I did any kind of injector cleaning or anything.

The drivers can have a lot to do with the MPG, even if they are driving together. Also, if the driver knows their truck, they can really make a difference. With the GM, keeping it in cylinder deactivation mode, with the Ford, stay out of the boost, and with the Dodge, driving to maximize the charging and use of the electrical assist.

What’s interesting here is how people criticize the ecoboost engines for not being efficient. Here we have a Raptor with a wider body, more weight, 35s and more power coming within 1 MPG on the Hwy to the 5.3L trailboss. The trail boss Silverado isn’t as wide, makes less power, rides on 32s and is lighter. I think the ecoboost should be criticized for the addictive power it has and how it encourages heavier foots lol.

Kevin McCune The regular 3.5L isn’t required to run premium but does run better on it. I’m sure it’s more important or a requirement for the Raptor. I wish TFL would say what they put in these trucks in all videos where performance testing or MPG is tested. Something interesting,0 the 6.2L recommends 89+ or 91+ remember which and the 5.7L Hemi recommends 89+ but they all run comfortably on 87. The 5.0L and the 5.3L are rated on 87 and don’t have a higher recommendation per mfg.

@@JsGarage Thats interesting , that would put the icing on the cake for Me, both of these engines are great( the durability of the LS series amazes Me) and I have nothing but good feelings for the 302, as tempting as ecoboost is , I think you will find some trucks wheezing around with bad turbos, in this neck of the woods back in the day when a turbo went out on a 2.3 or a Subaru, the most common fix was delete. Why would someone even think it possible for mileage to go up with break in miles? Modern fuel injected vehicles are shipped with a shitty one tune fits all engine variance program, then they try to reel it in with closed loop operation, and whatever is wasted gets chewed up by the cats. Closed loop operation does not occur after break in..... it occurs every time the engine reaches operating temp.... whether it has 0 miles or 100k miles. As an engine breaks in and the rings seat you might notice a performance increase, but not a mileage increase..... then after that period it's all downhill and called "engine wear" for a great reason..... mileage and performance both taper off eventually. I won't say my RAM has EVER got the advertised mileage, but then again I am pretty sure all those mileage ratings CLEARLY say "estimated" and are based on "if you are exactly 125lbs, driving at 5000ft elevation, using 5%ethanol, and lightning strikes estimations. Just like a sub amp.... "2000 watt Class D AMPLIFIER! then the little tiny text on the back clearly says "PEAK output 2000 watts @0.5ohms w/15v input" but of course the amp is only 1 ohm stable so yeah you get a cool 600 watts RMS.....lol If you are upset because you felt cheated by advertised mileage, well I need only say Caveat Emptor :)

No. Just no. Just because you believe it, and you feel everyone else does, does not make it fact. I can assure you that the motor itself is well broken in as soon as you hit the 20 mile mark and ANY improvement in gas mileage from the engine break in would be so negligible you wouldn't even be able to measure it in any quantifiable manner. These are not carbureted cars from the 1970s. They are modern fuel injected cars time's have changed and the age old methods have gone away. Next you'll tell me that cold air intakes outflow stock air boxes and add 30hp just because the sticker says so....... NO. If you want to prove to me that I am wrong, start a youtube channel and buy a new car and vlog EVERY fill up and mileage, sadly even in doing so you will just waste a ton of money and prove me right yet again.
