They tried saying Milli Vanilli was the same. I think everyone knew who Michael was and enjoyed the show. I think it was in poor taste when that New Jersey rocker covered this and everybody thought it was him and not John Rafferty and the Beaver Brown Band. Lesser known bands deserve the credit they are owed.

Yes, and no. It is clearly a '70s music style although in the early '80s, but it is supposed to be set in the early '60s, right at the start of the Beatles in America. Music was nothing like this then. There was Motown, there was heavily filtered commercial pop and bobby sox, there was country, there was jazz, and there was remnants of original rock and roll.

I agree, which is one of the best and worst parts of this movie. The music is very authentically late 70s/early 80s from the upper Jersey shore: plenty of bands playing similar stuff in the stone pony, Monmouth college, etc. Very much in the genre of early Bruce Springsteen. The problem is that this movie is supposed to take place in the late 50s, when there was a very different sound and rhythm to the popular music of the times.
