I def agree with the thought/theory that the chaotic life makes us want our homes to be a safe haven…ie rounded, calm, warm. I highly dislike the color terracotta but this year I’m like “yes I can see why people are embracing it” It’s earth, it’s grounded, it’s safe and warm feeling.

As a Goth/Goth adjacent I feel like everyone just relates us to gloomy and moody, but I always think more 1800 and early 1900, romantic era. It's finding the beauty and peace in the darkness, romanticising the inevitable and living with it. It's not just dark and depressive, is more being content with how existence is and deep acceptance. I'd recommend having a look at dark academia also to understand it better.
@aerialpunk

Yeah, I've known a number of gothy people over the years, and "gloomy" or "moody" isn't how I'd would've described most of them 😛 Especially the ones that dress up a bit, rather than wearing regular clothes just in all black. They were actually all fairly cheery, healthy people, who just enjoyed a dark aesthetic, found beauty in darker things, etc. I think the "witchy" angle I see a lot lately has something else going on psychologically, than a more general goth aesthetic tends to have. Still though, they seem like mostly quite positive people.

Romantic gothic in conjunction with dark academia, alt fashion's immortality and the pandemic makes it the prime time for it reappearing in the mainstream. Maximalism, opulent jewellery and pearls, and the potential re-emergence of velvet that a few people have predicted sure seem to reinforce that.

I just watched a documentary about how esthetics can affect mental health and the psychology of it all. Curves are calming to the brain as are negative spaces, where sharp edges, clutter disturb the mind. This trend you described is right in line with these studies. There are no squares, natural sharp edges in nature. I love color,but not that much color all at once 😃 Trends are always interesting….Thank you!

In my opinion the colorful and neon trend as well as the black moody aesthetic align perfectly with current developments in the (electronic) music scene- Techno is having a huge comeback so the nostalgia for 90s rave culture is being perfectly reflected in outfits as well 😃

@@omomo202 Yess techno is FINALLY out of this boring minimal phase and back with pure 90s-bangers! 🤩 right now acid techno tracks by artists like Charlotte de Witte are super popular. I think CDW’s remix of “The Age of Love” was actually the most popular techno track of 2021, so if that’s your style check out her “New Form” livestreams, they’re really good😃 Hard techno from artists like Klangkuenstler, Alignment or Amelie Lens is also getting more and more popular. And not to forget psy-techno/psy-trance is having a moment.. for that I’d recommend recent sets of Nina Kraviz 👍

I turned to handmade items: I took up knitting again, drawing and painting pictures to decorate the wall. I also hung up some fairy lights here and there (e.g. on one of our indoor plant). I search the Pinterest for woven bracelets (I don't like the cold feel and look of metals at the moment), and for knitting patterns. I avoid darkness or too loud colours. Thinking about a more sustainable long term.

I think what's super interesting and what I've just observed amongst those I actually know is that the dark vibes and the super colorful vibes are co-existing in the same spaces frequently. A friend recently redid her kitchen in all pink and redid her living room to be all black. Another friend recently painted her kitchen cabinets a deep forest green (they're absolutely gorgeous) and installed new iron plumbing fixtures. It gives off gothic farmhouse vibes that I am loving... meanwhile her living room is the most gorgeous shade of teal with cream colored furniture and a technicolor area rug, round mirror topped coffee table (round so no corners for the baby to poke an eye out on) and TONS and TONS of colorful throw pillows. Another friend who is the most bubbly and vivacious person you'd ever meet has done her entire new home in shades of charcoal with black and gold accents. It's sooooo chic and yet sooooo cozy feeling. She's on her feet all day with her job and when she's not on her feet she's doing the books or making schedules. She said when she's home she just wanted to feel like she was in a bougie cocoon. I think the shift is that people around the globe have decided they have the right to express ALL aspects of themselves and not everything has to "match" or "go together" for it to feel right and feel beautiful. And the 1990s are definitely influencing things. Everything from this past summer's tie dye trends to the grungy goth makeup trends to the bright and bold colors... I am so here for it.

I feel like the two vibes represents the two ways I have seen people deal with the pandemic… either they are looking for big escapism, or they are looking for comfort in their homes. I have been drawn more to the comfort, so I have been wearing more warm and neutral tone clothing than I ever have in my life, especially in cozy cardigans and sweaters over this winter.

Considering how we've been zooming through decade revivals (I swear, we went through entire 80s in 5 years and now we've revived and almost moved on from all-jeans 90s), do you think the emergence of Emo/Goth/Witchy could be a reflection of the same "decade revival" trend? The jewelry made me pause because I remember the early 2000s emo kids really embodied the idea of "personalized, unique jewelry, right in your face" and bold colours that contrasted dark&baggy "skater-wear".

@tamcon72 2 жыл бұрын
@@littlelady7843 There's actually no explanation for why, but it "dates" very quickly in a way that angular shapes--think square edges on counter tops rather than rounded ones--do not. It could be because in the past in the West, rounded furniture and clothing was the norm, and we perhaps are conditioned from an early age to consider such lines "old fashioned."

I loved this exploration of 2022 trends Justine. As always you entice, provoke and uplift :) I was thinking that round shapes as opposed to square may be a desire and reflection of the feminine. Being in the womb, warm, safe, cozy, no sharp edges. The square is masculine - four sides, concrete, four corners, hierarchy, manifestation. What I have noticed growing more each day in myself (maybe an aging related phenomenon as well!) is a desire to slow everything down. Slow creative expression reflected in my return to a plant based diet (Indian and middle eastern cuisine), more careful planning and sewing of my clothing including alternations and repairs.

By using natural materials in curve shapes with better quality fabrics like silk, linen, silk velvets, pure wool. The natural tones can be made even more luxurious feeling with glass knobs that look like diamonds, or mother of pearl. A modern take on Art Deco esthetics almost. It's amazing how these trends are reflective of how I feel! I usually now want something cosy and calming. And black for me is really calming colour, I know I go for it when I'm on edge, and right now it's almost exclusively black for me. And I've just got a new super comfy blanket^^ But. When it's not black it's bright red. And sometimes bright pink. Some big earrings. Some bright or metallic (sparkly) nail polishes. It's like if it's not black it must be super loud! If it's not black it must be as much out there as I can handle))) Like I can't be moderate, it's either one extreme or the other. I've noticed this duality sometime ago. So this trend video was just 'Wow!'. Thank you for your content, Justine!♥️

When I saw the dark moody trend coming from a place of sadness or nostalgia, I actually associated it more with climate change than with the pandemic. I feel in terms of pandemic the colourful trend better represents the mood of the people, where we are all like "ok, let's get it over with and go all out!". However, conversations about climate change is very present and usually bringing a mood of hopelessness and catastrophy.

I work from home and am rarely fashionable (my insides love chic, my outsides love lounge sweats and streetwear), but I’m pleased to see that I’m ahead on the moody trend. For six months or so I’ve been building my capsule wardrobe for when I see the light of day, and it’s got a healthy serving of black sheer tops and thick sweaters, and beautiful lingerie to peek underneath. I also had only one piercing in my ears but got a second a few months back, and also bought many faux ear cuffs. I’m super into the romantic dark moody vibe, but I’ve lived in that feeling since I was a kid, I think. I also have had velvet-esque duvets, pillows, and moody rugs in my rented place, surrounded with candles and dark nature-inspired art. Now, if only I’d get out of my sweats or sports bras and shorts in the garden, and clean up and go out. ☺️

Influences also happen with film and museums. Sometimes when you are out walking a colour may stand out either in nature or in a crowd. My ideas begin when someone looks uncomfortable in their clothing and I begin to think about how the garment could be made more wearable... Thank you Justine this is helping to blow the winter clouds away. Birdy

Honestly for me I'm starting to see a really strong generational divide appearing in these trend reports now and it's really cool! Also, the early 2000s are coming back even in ways we don't immediately recognize (pink shoes and sparkles anyone?). Actually now that I think about it, almost everything on the list is leaning early 2000s

Totally agree with your explanation of the curvy trend - times are uncertain, curves bring us closer to being in the womb again, our ur-safe place. Love your analysis, as always!

Super interesting! As a designer who focuses on sustainable, long-lasting pieces, do the trends end up influencing your designs? Do you consider them consciously, or do you think they sneak in there anyway? :) Would be interested in a video on your design-idea process starts or where you take inspiration.

My wardrobe at this time is a mix of black and saturated jewel tones. This is a change from the cheerful, colorful prints and colors that I wore two years ago.💕

I have long subscribed to the William Morris suggestion to 'Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful. ' I extend that to 'or be comfortable' whether an item is in my home or on my person as well. I like an uncluttered, Zen-like vibe within a classic and timeless style in my home and my wardrobe. Though I find trends and the reasons for them interesting, from experience I know that I will tire of them quickly. That said, it's possible to tweak a stylish but classic/timeless look just enough to keep it fresh and fun without going full on bling or goth or whatever.

This was SO very interesting! The goth and maximal jewelry are the two trends that have interested me the most lately. Probably for the reasons you mentioned, my reality (Covid) and what I want reality to be (happy and sparkly).

Hmm, this could explain my recent obsession for silk camisoles. Also, I live in Canada and I need warm under layers. Silk does the job perfectly, it's like wearing nothing, but warmer !😅
