What a walk. Join me as I touch down with the source of the river Lugg and hike its deep cut ravine. A gnarly, wild and remote descent to camp I find myself remembering old times whilst eyeing up a hike for the future - The Heart of Wales Line Trail, which I was pitched practically on top of. It was a good night in a spectacular camping location.
Quick facts:
The Lugg is the largest tributary of the River Wye and flows for 63 miles.
It starts on Pool Hill in the Radnor Forest and enters the Wye 4 miles East of Hereford.
The tops nearby its source are heather clad and home to ground nesting birds such as Curlew, Grouse, Lapwing and Golden Plover.
It's health has recently been called into question and is the source of much debate regarding the health of the Wye system overall.

A lovely tribute to your brother Mark. I agree completely on your thoughts on how we treat our water ways, it is disgusting in some places. We are fortunate here in Canada to so much clean water. Thank you for taking us along my friend!

Your loss for Paul and the journey in his honour is very touching. . These moments of reflection, these days of staring back at the past . I wish I had that connection with my own brother. You had a special link there. On my walks recently I keep stumbling upon the same guy in the middle of nowhere, he's usually sitting in the forest , in silence . I guess he is on a similar journey . Happy birthday. Regards Owen

The perfect Birthday gift for you to do this trail Mark, thanks for sharing the memories of past trips with Paul. Love the retrospective narrative and the old clips. Can't believe you considered dossing down in that old caravan though. I'd be scared of an old wino turning up at two in the morning. Two fantastic camps Mark proper enjoyed both parts of this adventure. The info on the dead sheep was very helpful, knocked me a bit sick seeing that rotten water remembering all the rivers iv'e drank from. Water infections are hard to clear, I had one decades ago from drinking straight from source and I still get the odd twinge every now and them. I always filter. Thanks again Mark.

It sure was the perfect birthday trip Jim - loved it deeply. Glad you liked the narrative and clips - it was so good to be back there. Ha, that caravan hadn't been slept in for a while but it was dirty around it and I knew better existed, which it did in the forest. Yeah, that water can be well infected at source - but the toxins do dissolve over distance. So filtering further down is OK. I resonate with water infection - I had one to and my stomach turned like a bugger. Well, thanks again Jim - always good my friend. Mark

Mark, I love that idea of honouring rivers as amazing and complex ecosystems that bring life. It is a battle against those vested interests whose aim is making money for their investors and hopefully those in the battle will continue to grow until there is real change as to how business is allowed to treat our rivers. There aren't many rivers here that don't have that slime. Finding the first flow of a river is such a cool thing and knowing that it will continue to grow and grow👍 Returning to a camp spot from 10 years ago that has resonance is pretty special and it did look like a good spot👍 It sounded so peaceful lying in the tent with those birds performing from the 'singing tree'. I do like a tidy tent and have to have everything in its place😊 Really cool to see you back out on these bigger adventures and with more plans for the future👍

Hi there gerry, yeah it's great to find the origin of a river and follow it and watch it grow. I agree it will be a good day when our big water companies and farming practices change. Both are massive polluters. Yes, I imagine Ireland has the same problem. For sure gerry I loved going back to that spot - you know the feeling when you see a long old friend for the first time in years. It was like that and the sounds were siblime. Ah, yeah an orderly camp. I get you you bro. Well, still working on my fitness but back out again soon for a longer one. I did just over 35 mile on this one. Thanks gerry - see you out there. Mark

Firstly Mark, the birdsong I heard when you were talking about the 'singing tree', was a dear little robin and I'm sure you know the superstition that a robin encounter marks the spiritual visit of a departed loved one. What struck me here was the disproportionate deep ravine that little trickle dwelt in, perhaps indicative of a more powerful flow once.....maybe glacial meltwaters? Anyway, an excellent way to celebrate your birthday. ATB, Chris 👍
@WyeExplorer
@WyeExplorer 11 ай бұрын
Hey, thanks Chris - I've heard enough of them I should have know that. But yeah 'When robins appear, loved ones are near.' So good to know it was a Robin. I think you may have a point abut the glacial activity. I know that numerous glacial channels existed in the Wye basin mist noticeably in the Aymestrey gorge where I camped last. It might well be the case here - it is deep for such a wee river. For sure I had a great birthday - I was touched many times. All the best bro. Mark

So nice to meet the man with his bike and sad to hear about Judith's husband. Nice memories for you from that little pool when you sat in it in 2013 ! It is a shame about our rivers getting poisoned I agree. I liked your tent spot and your food looked delicious. Gorgeous singing tree and someone told me you can actually get a bird song recognition app 🙂 Great to watch as usual 👍 ~ Anna

Hi there Anna, many thanks my friend. Hey, glad you enjoyed the birthday weekend and narration - I don't do that often. I'm just practicing - would love to be a s free and good with it as yourself. For sure great to meet the folks there - all good as were the memories at source. I absolutely love it there. With regards the rivers it's heart breaking - we have the knowhow and tech for goodness sake. Not every farmer knows where their sheep die though. Good job it wasn't opposite my camp - it's a super location. Hey, I may check that app out. Thanks Anna - have a great rest of the week. Mark

@@WyeExplorerAww so kink Mark thank you but yes I enjoyed it 👍 Not sure if you follow Jennifer Lupine from Washington? She's one of my favourite hiking channels because of the places she hikes and she yells us what plants and flowers and birds are that she films on her hikes and she mentioned a bird recognition app that she uses, not sure what it's called though. Have a good evening 🙂

@@FXWalesAnnaAlf Thanks Anna. Yeah, it does happen. A friend who I was hiking the Wye with was suffering mental illness - in fact he's just got out of section for 3 months. She was saying overly supporting things about him - it was so odd not knowing how challenging it was. I felt she didn't know the background well enough to comment. See you out there.

Thanks Mark and a belated Happy Birthday to you! That tent looks very similar to my Lanshan 1, a great little tent and never lets in a drop of water, even in the heaviest rain. The ravine reminds me a lot of part of a regular walk of mine, up Ashes Hollow to the top of the Long Mynd, well worth a day out if you haven't been. Anyway, thanks again Mark, another great watch.

Hi there Paul, thank you mate. Yeah, I know the Lanshan - the Six Moons was the US backpacking original that the Chinese emulated. Still, they did a good job. I've seen the Ashes Hollow on maps but never been there - I've walked the Long Mynd though. Lovely up there. Well, all the best out there. A pleausre as always. Mark

Hey "Happy Birthday". I hadn't realised so much is flushed in to these rivers, from farms and factories. Maddening. Can you remember your first river explore as a kid? Such a lovely location. There is a stream running down the back of my property that has no life in it at all. When I asked an older neighbour where all the fish were he casualy replied 'Oh the factory up there uses the water to clean their chemicals out of their storage facilities' ..what can I say Mark bro !!?? That dead sheep looks like it was doing much the same !! There is a river in Buckinghamshire called the Misbourne ..it has had intermittently reduced or stopped-flow due to abstraction for domestic supply from the aquifers feeding it. The name means the 'vanishing brook'
