Unlike most of his other skits, this one has an actual story behind it. Theodore Rosevelt was out hunting one day and when his hunting party found a bear cub, he refused to kill it, instead helping the animal. A toy maker thought this was admirable and made a stuffed bear to commemorate Roosevelt’s compassion. He named it the “Teddy” bear after him.

Bears are predators, but they're opportunistic predators. IIRC their diet is like only 30% meat, including carrion. Basically, a bear tends to eat what it comes across, it seems worth the effort to do it, and more times than not plants, insects and fungi are for obvious reasons more attractive than something they've to chase or fight.

They called Roosevelt and suggested him to shoot the bear. but he refuced because it was unsportsmanlike.
