In 1978, I was an 18 yr old kid in the Navy on a submarine on patrol. In those days for some reason we had access to “new releases” . I remember watching this movie and this performance, mesmerized, and to this day, I remember my words said out loud to no one in particular, “who is this man?” As soon as we got back to shore, I bought every record I could get my hands on by “Van the Man” . 40-some years later, I bet I’ve listened to and watched this performance hundreds of times and always feel like it’s the first time I “discovered” Van Morrison.

I just read that Van was absolutely terrified to go out in front of this large crowd and the only reason he appeared on the stage was because he was physically pushed to get out there. He even went on hiatus earlier in the 70s once the size of his audience began to grow because he felt he simply couldn’t do it. Needless to say, you wouldn’t be able to tell he was nervous if no one had told you. Absolutely incredible.

I firmly believe and know Van is a control freak and the musician lineup was out of his control which would have caused him concern.

Four years late in replying, but you are spot on. Irrespective of venue or genre, whether as a headlining act or guesting, he is true to himself and his self-confidence is made manifest to his audiences vis-a-vis his energy and consistent delivery. Here, it probably did not hurt that the horns, the prominence of Levon's low end, and Robbie interspersing sharp, biting licks, all frame, complement, and elevate his talent; something that is no doubt very hard to do (i.e., think of Duane Allman's contribution to Aretha's cover of "The Weight". This is one of the shows that I most regret not being around to see. For Scorsese to win his first Oscar for "The Departed" despite this ambitious masterpiece and what it chronicles being a forgotten bullet point in a very long resume, is quite sad. Scorsese filming a true Bill Graham Production ... that is already the figurative mirepoix for a great event. What a night!

thomas o'sullivan in what way is it fraudulent? he was popular in SA, my parents listened to him, and thought he was dead till the 90s, when he was found, and performed a concert here.
