The chaos that can get unleashed on your body from your diet is so important to understand. Having low energy and brain fog is not only frustrating but it feels debilitating as well. I've had my own recent experience with low energy that had me questioning if I had lost my drive. Starting with my diet and realizing pecans were causing my energy to feel so low was shocking for me. Dr. Steven Gundry's latest book, The Energy Paradox, reveals what's taking place on a cellular level that was affecting the body's energy. He joins me to unpack how significant gut health is to your immune system and brain. We get into the chaos leaky gut causes and how you can make better choices to restore your energy. Even if you have a healthy diet, Dr. Gundry, a cardiothoracic surgeon, will surprise you.

QUOTES:
“believe it or not in the American diet 24 hours a day, we're causing leaky gut we're assaulting our immune system, [...] just from fat, we are just a giant ball of inflammation.” [18:54]
“So if we look at energy production, as literally cars moving down through a freeway, it's no wonder that even though we're eating huge amounts of calories, we have no energy because we literally log jam the mitochondria.” [38:29]
“You've got to eat for your gut microbiome first, and you have to choose foods that they want to eat. And if you do that, they will take care of you.” [40:09]
“We die, we get diseases, by breaks in the wall of our gut that start this process” [41:05]
“If you begin to gradually restrict the time you eat down to about six to eight hours a day, you will develop much better functioning mitochondria, you'll actually have a better gut wall because you're not working on digestion. 24 hours a day. And you're gonna protect your brain.” [41:57]
Guest Bio: Dr. Steven Gundry is an American doctor and author. He is a former cardiac surgeon and currently runs his own clinic, investigating the impact of diet on health. Gundry conducted cardiac surgery research in the 1990s and was a pioneer in infant heart transplant surgery, and is a New York Times best-selling author of The Plant Paradox: The Hidden Dangers in "Healthy" Foods That Cause Disease and Weight Gain. He is best known for his disputed claims that lectins, a type of plant protein found in numerous foods, cause inflammation resulting in many modern diseases.

If I understood it correctly, this confirms that MCT - although saturated - does NOT have the negative effects other saturated fats have, right? Would add them into my diet.

I'll be re-evaluating eating windows. I had been optimizing for regular fasts of more than 16 hours (e.g., 32), but with leeway on some days. Looks like it's better to be strict every day.

I’ve known about this for 15 years when I was diagnosed with 32 food intolerances in 2008- I still have the card from Immunolabs. When I eat right, I feel better, but it only takes one cheeseburger for me to fall off the wagon for 6 months. But what this guy is saying is TRUTH! I know it, I just refuse to live by it. Isn’t that sad?

Goji berries are also part of the Solanaceae family, which means they’re a nightshade. 2: Grains - Whole grains have more, since they are found in higher concentrations in the outer bran. 3: Dairy - Pasteurized milk and dairy products may actually be worse because the heat destroys the naturally present SIgA, which is an immunoglobulin that may help neutralize lectins to some degree by binding to them (7). 4: Legumes - Beans, lentils, and peas. 5: Nuts and seeds - Excluding grain seeds, there is not much evidence to suggest that humans are sensitive to the types of lectins in tree nuts and most flowering seeds. 6: Yeast - It’s worth noting that “only a few reports are available” about the activity of yeast lectins. Just because you don’t see a food on the list, that doesn’t mean it’s safe.

They need to add a TL:DR section at the end of each video of what was said and how to simplistically implement that into your daily life. If you have the capacity to sit through the science you can make the determinations for yourself, but most people don't have that ability, either through attention span, interest, or sometimes the background knowledge to understand the concepts. However, personal growth is just that, a personal journey. There's never really a "one size fits all" course of action for everybody. Determine what's best for you and trial and error some shit. Sometimes that's all it takes.

It’s easier just to do keto, most people are severely carb addicted. Millennials (and gen x’ers 70’s, 80’s kids) especially grew up on processed commercialized sugar and flour. So going back to basics meat, high fat dairy and low starch veggies are a great reset, the only way I could break the insulin resistance that I was feeling (although not clinically showing).

I found this profound. I’m a woman in my 30s with 2 kids struggling with total exhaustion, fatigue and brain fog! Everyone kept saying you are a mother of young children it’s normal. I got so sick and overwhelmed with life (and I’m lucky by comparison) that I started on a journey to improve my life and I’m still only scratching the surface of all the things, but GPs definitely only focus on fixing the symptom not the cause. For the last 6 months I’ve been attacking the symptoms, and am still suffering, after listening to this the cause is clear. My diet is pretty crappy and always has been. I’m far away from cutting all the “healthy” foods that are bad for you phase. I just need to eat less crap to start with. But thank you for this! I’m sure it will make a massive difference in my life focusing on this

Go have your vitamin D checked by the doctor. Low vitamin D can make you feel exhausted and depressed. Read up on what all that vitamin D can do to us when it too low. Also, have your thyroid checked. Eating real whole foods will totally change (and save) your life for the better, but you have to have the energy to make real food and not buy processed or fast food. So ask your doc to run some labs to check your vitamin d and thyroid. I felt the same way you did and felt guilty for not having the energy to be the mom I wanted to be but getting my vitamin D, thyroid checked, and eating healthily brought me back to life. I had to learn this all for myself because your right, GPs just want to throw pills at you. You're doing great.. keep up the great work and Good luck!

Good on you, sounds like you're on the right path. Keep going! And equally important, it will benefit your children very much as well. Both in terms of that they eat, but also in terms of mimicking you as a role model. And VERY true words about GPs only addressing symptoms. Majority only know sickness, and sadly know nothing about health.

@@Badabinger omg this is the perfect way of looking at it, that doctors "only know sickness and nothing about health"! Thank you so much for sharing that. I've had a lot of issues with doctors never actually trying to get to the bottom of illnesses and like someone else above said just "throwing pills at you". But this sentence that you shared really explains why. They aren't even thinking about health! Being tired or exhausted or having brain fog isn't a diagnosable illness so they just don't care, illness is their only focus. Thank you so much for this perspective!!🙏🙏👏👏👏

@@hoppas77 thank you. My friend had the same issue with vitamin D too, mine is totally fine though. My issue is I’m severely low in iron and can’t retain it. The GP sent me to a therapist to help me with my sleep issues before they suggested a blood test, I ended up going the doctor and saying I’m so depleted something is really wrong, and initially he thought I had an early onset of menopause, turned out I had as close to no iron as possible before fainting. What kills your energy is the constant imbalance, abuse and drastic extremes that people do to their bodies. Obviously that binge eating pecans would invariably hurt the body in the long run. Despite labeled as " healthy " they still have components that hurt the body when over eaten. People need to learn their bodies are like a scale and when you tilt too much to one side , the effects will reflect. Too much junk foods leads to A,B ,C causes. Too much of healthy food leads to X,Y,Z causes. Balance the intake and you won't get any causes. Unless, of course, your body can't really process it. Genetics also play a big role . I've seen healthy people dropping dead or clinging to their lives and old people with the nastiest habits dying as old as time itself. " Oh I can't have this , oh I can't have that " People nowadays browse constantly and constantly are fed new information of what hurts and what doesn't. The results of that is them tip toeing and living in a constant struggle because they block themselves from doing or eating things that taste good, because health gurus and nutrition gurus say they can't or shouldn't. This needs to stop and a balanced education should be the way forward. I see people almost feel guilty for having a mere ice cream, a bowl of pasta or fried food because of sugars and carbs and transfats. They then stress their bodies and mind to oblivion exercising , dieting and mentally fighting a simple craving they had, like their lives depend on it. In my opinion the only good thing that came out of this doctor's mouth was the time restricting feeding. Because that is the logical thing to do. Digesting consumes a lot of energy, that's why people feel drained shortly after a meal. Same with snacking. If you're constantly snacking , the body is working around the clock , digesting and pushing the food out of the body. Much like a machine, it can't work around the clock. It needs a break. Point being : Exercise , balance your diet and indulge yourself. You'll be dead anyway someday. I much rather prefer to accept a friend's invitation for lunch or dinner and eat the carbonara or fast food he cooked or ordered and have good times , than staying at home eating a salad because that is supposed to be healthier. Don't do that please.

very true, we didnt come here to be perfect, it is funny that you will find people with unhealthy lifestyles living longer than people that have healthy ones, obviously this isn't the case for the majority. I remember an author who wrote a book about eating intentionally spoiled foods, raw meats, I think and was interviewed in, IIRC, 60 Minutes. The author shared that he was very sickly since he was a child and has gone through every type of medical doctor for a cure of his chronic condition. His last desperate move was to an Alaskan tribe, where the native healer fed him spoiled? whale innards. This made him sick and was out for a couple of days with a fever. But after this ordeal, the healer explained that the bacteria in the spoiled meat helped his gut bacteria to make him healthy. The author continued this practice, and this being the foundation of his book. During the interview with 60 Minutes, a Health and Sanitary Inspector was presented to see the jar "food" of the author, and even see the author dig into the jar. The Inspector said to the reporter that normally people who would eat that spoiled stuff will eventually be sick and need hospitalization. He was amazed and dumbfounded how this type of food even cured the author. Note: I no longer cannot recall the name of the author nor the title of the book... Though I am quite sure it was a 60 Minute show... Btw, watched it on tv when the internet was not yet that popular...

Nothing can easily fix it. But this method you talk about is one of ways. I don't like animals at home but it probably is a good idea in this context. Kids eating soil suddenly don't look stupid. That's why kids from villages playing in mud e.c. are much healthier than these from cities.

This was complicated. I'm not sure I even know what to do. 1. Restrict eating to 6 to 8 hours of the day. This lets your gut and your mitochondria rest, and you'll have more energy and your gut will have time to heal itself or something. 2. Don't eat processed foods because they send all the macronutrients to your mitochondria at once. Your mitochondria get overwhelmed like a traffic jam and slow producing energy from these nutrients. If instead you eat whole foods and let them naturally digest, you'll send things in the right order to mitochondria, thus producing more energy. (It's not clear what these pre-digested foods are though...) 3. We may all have intestinal permeability, or leaky gut of we have energy problems. It can happen easily in our modern diet because of numerous reasons like eating nuts, eating processed foods, not eating enough variety. A leaky gut may or may not form because the good microbes in the intestine are not being fed and dying off while bad ones proliferate. Not clear on all the ways you can get a leaky gut...

I've been healthy my whole life, but truly been 'studying myself' for about 8 years now, and every year i've made progress with what foods work for me. I have so much energy! :D for example - i am a fitness instructor for work (i teach AND do the class simutaneously) i teach 10-15 classes a week, and weight train 3/4 times a week, run half marathons weekly also. Awesome conversation. Really insightful stuff, but it brings up a question for me - if fasting is the best way to give your mitochondria time to break down C P & F, what would you recommend for someone who is highly physically active for most hours of the day? (talking 2-5k active calories each day). For someone to eat that many calories it would be difficult to restrict the eating window, would the best solution be to space the times between meals?

Humans are hunter gatherers. We are designed to eat a fatty animal based diet and gather edible plants and fruits when animal products weren't available. Saturated natural fats are our friend, yet we've been conditioned to fear them, hardly surprising as the people telling us they're bad are the ones who make money when we're fat and sick. This makes looking at research difficult, as the paid peer reviewed studies are designed and paid for by people who need us sick. You're better to look at the healthy tribes around the world and look there, or read the thousands of long term n=1 studies on health forums. I'm now ketovore and thriving in a way I never did when eating plentiful veggies and fruits. I've been omnivore, plant based and animal based and in my personal n=1 experiment, animal based is the clear winner by a long, long way.
@hono50
@hono50 2 жыл бұрын
@@sportysbusiness Happy you found something that works for you! I'm not quite taking the argument of intentionally altered research, especially when the alternative (plant based) is cheap. While the argument of "healthy tribes" seems plausible, there's too many factors in observational studies that make interpretation hard. I'm searching for a specific gain: longevity and healthspan. Evolution didn't optimize us for that yet, so we need to rely on controlled studies that can determine cause-effect relationships. We (me specifically, but also the scientific community) are still learning, and the various contradicting results show that it's pretty complex and sometimes individual and there's still a lot we don't get yet.

Don’t take Metamucil if you can help it . I discovered really bad gut bacteria by scope and then I bought (Bobs Ground Flaxmeal ) . Keep it in fridge,and use it by the best before date. You can buy the seeds but ground them up fine in a coffee grinder. If it smells bad don’t eat it . I’ve never had a problem with it . I have Gastritis and blocked bile ducts and hiatal hernia. I began to eat only fresh veggies and quinoa salad,and instead of buying the probiotics,I began eating fermented foods. Miso, kimchi, sauerkraut, the fermented veggies are so good for your gut. Then I started doing intermittent fasting. I was so hard to go 10-14 hours . Now I go 17-19 hours between meals. I have tea ,but it took 2-3 months and ( Dr David Sinclair Lifespan book ) and now I go all day without hunger. In fact I reserved my age by 10 yrs just by cutting out all processed foods. It theory had on Dr Rick Johnson. Excellent podcast on why animals can turn the switch on and why we get fat . Salt , sugar, fruit k red meat . Pop soda corn.

You know, it's so interesting that recently I ate quite a huge meal of healthy stuff- spinach, broccoli, sardine, tuna, eggs, bacon, cucumber, tomatoes, avocado's and some salad mix. I mean, by the ingredients you probably can tell already that the size was quite a huge one. Interestingly, when I felt full and stopped eating, that heaviness didn't go away for almost the whole day. I would say that probably the quantity has to do a lot with it, but also that I really should look into products that I was eating and figure out that when transitioning from sugary stuff and processed foods to natural foods, it can be heavy for my body and it might be hard to deal with all of this, dealing with nutrients, digesting all of the parts. Probably, I have to eat in way lesser quantities and maybe even less ingredients at one meal. What do you think?

A lot of people think they have gluten problems, but they really have folic acid problems, which is in all "enriched" processed foods like bread, pasta, boxed cereals etc. Up to 75% of the population has a MTHFR Gene Variant and should probably avoid folic acid and get real folate instead. This is why people feel better switching to keto or low carb. Not because meat and fat are good, as is being promoted, but because they need to stop eating processed wheat products. Eating oatmeal, sweet potatoes and lentils and such would give the same positive results without shortening your lifespan.

@@gedas7058 It is always reccomended not to mix multiple animal protein sources in one meal. And that is best to eat no more than 5 ingredients in one meal: each has its own digestive time and needs different enzimes to be digested so when you mix lots of things is harder to digest thus the fatigue as the body struggles. Lots of pp floow the 5 ingredients meals, including Halle Berry. So a salad with fist (one type) or poultry or what you want and two greens plus olive oil and lemon will be ideal. And other combinations, so try to have less ingredients first, then switch between greens till you will fibure it out what you can tolerate (you feel the extra energy and the ''feel good'' thing) and then try to stick most to what your body loves eating. Some ppl are good with mixing one protein with fat cheese and greens or cucumbers + tomato (these two are considered fruits). Not everything in once

@@MirelaLeoni really? I never realised that many things at the same time could really burden my system. I'll try to make salads of 3-4 veggies, some lime or lemon juice just for the taste with an oil and one source of protein like poultry. Great! Will reduce the complexity of the meals.

I did carnivore for a month to reset my gut and in hopes of healing severe celiac disease. I’ll probably never be 100% but resetting my gut, taking time to research the right supplements and doing fasting in there with it did a lot for me. Working on adding foods back in slowly and will forever do an autoimmune style keto. I don’t miss sweets or carbs much anymore. I’m going back to the gym after three months of prioritizing gut health and reproductive health by quitting birth control. So excited to gain muscle and be healthier than ever!

Be careful. The Organic chicken and salmon are ok ,but the red meat ,sugar,salts, corn, fructose are dangerous. Dr David Sinclair Lifespan Book . He’s reversing aging in mice and now adults . We even have to watch our brand of Olive oil . If you were born by Cesarean Section ,then you have to be careful because a vaginal birth gives you excellent microbes ,where C Section does not . Dr Terry Wahls reversed her severe MS with the Paleo Diet and Coenzyme Q10, Vit D2= D3&K2 , Zinc,Quercitin, mushrooms, time released Vit C , nitric oxide, water and Dr Carloyn Dean ReMag Liquid Magnesium Chloride,is the best magnesium + Krill oil . 🙂

@@weedylock nothing would surprise me at this point that it would do something like that. I’m off for good and my husband and I were able to conceive baby number four. He’s getting a vasectomy so we don’t have to worry about more children and I don’t have to go back on birth control after this pregnancy and birth.

@@maryssaann congratulations. You sound very informed. I might be similar to you because of the autoimmune thing getting screened for now. I am wondering if it would be safe to make a brownie with some sorghum flour and good chocolate? That is one of my downfalls, I like chocolate! I even tried accpuncture to deal with being hooked on it.

Tom, would you mind giving us the recipe for your pecan pudding? Or if it wasn't home made, could you give us the ingredients list or brand name? You mentioned getting your energy back when you stopped eating this pudding. Did you stop eating the whole thing, or did you continue with all the same ingredients, minus the pecans, or perhaps substitute in a different ingredient? Cheers mate. Always interesting to see who you're talking to.
