I have really enjoyed and learned so much from this series! What would your opinion be on doing mulching for a smaller lawn care business? Is it worth it?

So I know one of the most important things systems accomplish is taking away the dependence of a single employee. For example if an employee leaves, they can be easily replaced without throwing a wrench in the business. So what system is there if both the gm and crew worker leave? I don’t see any other solution besides Mike coming and training someone, which would then keep Mike in the business.
@MikeAndes

I’ll b 3000 miles away so that won’t be an option 😀 the regional manager would simply find another GM. I have 7 of the locations. They run because of the great people and the systems. Everyone, including myself, is replaceable. The systems keep working. And most companies had an infant stage with just a couple employees so yes their key personnel risk is greater

Hi I'm thinking about starting a lawn care business but don't have a mower or anything and all I have is a compact car. ( dodge charger) I was thinking about going with ego because I was thinking about mowing in the morning before I work. Like early in the morning what do you think about that ? I already have google bus acc logo and door hanger

When you say 4 budget hours for the job, it is for 1 worker for the 4 hours job or does not matter how many people is working on the job?

The only thing I hate about lowering prices is lawn care work becomes a race to the bottom. You’re teaching the new guys that the only way to succeed is to drop your price. Here’s an example. Our bare bone minimum 25 years ago was $50. Chuck was charging $35-40 for average Joe’s yard. You’re still there$25 years later. I’m not trying to beat you down. I’m just trying to get you to see what cutting prices just to get work will do and has done. This all began when in 2009/10 when everyone decided they could start a business because they had a mower. I know I only see part of the story, price will always reflect quality and your turnover will always be high. That said, congratulations. Looks like you have a good group of guys

Technology is deflationary. Mowers got more efficient in the last 25 years, CRM and routing adds efficiency. Labor will continue to get more expensive, but software and robotics at scale is extremely hard to beat. I expect prices for commodities to continue dropping or remaining below inflation. Technology will be the thing that disrupts a fragmented market because price is competitive with systems and infrastructure completion cannot replicate
@dirtynewschannel
@dirtynewschannel Жыл бұрын
@@MikeAndes I agree with most. Mowers of 25 years ago are less efficient but not in a big way. They aren’t more efficient than than 10 years ago as far as production. Technology is getting ahead of practically. The costs you can’t escape through tech (Equipment purchase costs, maintenance and repair, fuel, insurance, vehicles, labor and property lease) are at least 3 times higher. Tech has eliminated some time for your accountant and to a certain point in growth it eliminates needing office help or as much. Higher prices alone allows more money due to fewer clients needed to make, well, $1500. That’s less wear and tear and less fuel adding more profit. Now let’s look at the dollar overall. Your net is much less and each dollar goes nowhere near as far. We use the same technology. I recently downloaded Copilot for the landscaping businesses and the pressure washing business. It looks to be well done. I’m hoping it evolves over the next year to be usable in other areas as we will be opening a 100 acre venue for weddings and corporate events. Again, I’m not trying to trash or hate on you. I applaud you for at least getting lawn care guys to see the back end of business and your drive is way up there. Also, do you really need to charge less if you’re overhead is less? Did you drop the price on the neighbors because it cost you zero in marketing? No.

@@dirtynewschannel Mike has said in multiple videos you lower prices at the beginning to fill the schedule then as the schedule fills you either raise prices or add more hours by hiring. Once the schedule is filled he will probably substantially raise the prices if I had to guess from watching other of his videos unless he is trying to grow very quickly. At some point they will turn over to profit mode and prices will go up.

You're leaving money on the table. I'd suggest investing in a hedge trimmer and brush cutter attachment. Or just get a hedge trimmer and start doing clean ups. I do them as a solo operator.

$1500 a day on lawns is difficult, that’s my goal and it’s a hard push to get to that. When we do landscaping/cleanups it’s easy but marketing for constant landscape jobs is hard, so it all has it’s faults. A good mix of both is the way for me.
