I'm glad I didn't let the ingredient police scare me out of a great thing with keto. Dirty keto items like Coke Zero, Jello zero sugar, Redi-whip zero sugar, and a little squeeze bottle of Splenda have been indispensable tools in getting my sweet hits and eliminating high sugar carbs. My doctor is still picking up her jaw from the ground after seeing me put my diabetes into remission. I could not have gotten there without these inexpensive options. Not everyone can afford the high-priced items and exotic ingredients that many keto influencers make their audience feel obligated to buy. Steve, I am grateful that you use this channel to make keto accessible to everyone, and it never feels dogmatic.

Hi Steve, When you said you were an INFJ I had to look it up. While doing so I came across the following quote, “Treat people as if they were what they ought to be, and you help them to become what they are capable of being.” -Goethe I really needed to see this quote this morning because I was in the midst of feeling intensely frustrated with a couple of people in my life who deserve a lot more grace and less judgment. Cost wise I believe for myself ( there is only me) is cheapest and I can control portions better because nuts are addictive. I remember only buying butter at the holidays for the special dinner. I cannot imagine eating margarine now though. It really cracks me up now that they advertise "plant based butter" ---like isn't that just margarine??? On the nuts---when I started Keto I was eating a lot of nuts. The fall roasted pecans at Sam's were my favorite--they are hard to limit to the correct serving size. But I had a lot of stomach issues---I learned I have diverticulosis and so I really steer clear of the nuts these days. It has made a big difference. I like that the "rich in fiber" was less than 1g. Super rich! Thanks for all the great content.

Great video as always Steve. Interesting you mention cashews. I've been traveling and eating out a lot during my travels. Needless to say that it is very difficult to stay keto when you have to eat out every day, so I put on a lot of weight in the past month. I tried going with cashews as one of my sources for good fat. I try to keep my carbs from all sources at less than 50 grams a day, so usually I'm OK with eating some small quantities of nuts, and getting most of my carbs from low starch vegetables. For me, my body does best when including the nutrients and fiber into my diet that I get from veggies, and I just don't feel good when I go full carnivore. Anyway, it can be difficult for me to get enough veggies when I'm staying in hotels and don't have my own kitchen. That's the excuse my mind comes up with anyway. Some nuts are pretty good with the macro ratio where I can get the fats and proteins that I want and still keep my carbs under 50g a day. I thought I would be OK with cashews as well, and boy was I wrong. I love cashews, so maybe that is part of the problem but the carbs in them definitely kicked me out of keto, and for me, and I know everyone is different, but I found that the cashews also caused a lot of inflammation in my joints and especially my feet which now balloon up every time I have even just a handful of cashews. Bummer man! Anyway, I'm glad you mentioned them in this episode because I've also noticed that they are very high in carbs, and for me, not keto friendly. When trying to do research on the nutritional value of cashews, several of the sites I came across said that cashews are one of the least tested of all nuts so there isn't a great deal of information available for them. Oh, and yes, they are both a fruit and a nut. The nut itself isn't of course, but I was really surprised on one of my trips to Asia where I actually saw cashew trees for the first time. The nuts grow on the outside at the bottom tip of the fruit. If you've ever seen a mountain apple or know what one is, the fruit kind of looks like that and has a nice refreshing flavor, not too sweet, and the nut hangs down off the bottom end of the fruit. Do a search on cashew fruit and you'll see how cashews are considered a fruit and a nut both. Good episode, and I'm with you on not using aspartame. For me it's toxic and gives me a headache right away anytime there is any in my food or drink. I'm old enough to remember when it first started to be pushed on consumers and one of the major soft-drink companies sent out small cans of their sugar free soda/pop out to everyone in town in the mail. The very first time I tried one of those diet pops I got the most wicked headache you can imagine, so I've tried to stay away from the stuff ever since, but sometimes they just sneak it in on us. Looking forward to following your journey with the last 15 pounds. I'm pretty much in the same boat, where I've been carrying about 15 pounds around for a year or so, while remaining at a pretty stable weight on keto, with the intention of getting rid of them "someday," but now that I'm not traveling anymore and can get more serious, I'm going to try to see if I can keep up with you and say goodbye to those annoying extra pounds. Looking forward to the vegan keto interview and keeping up on how you are doing with your new goals. Thanks for all you do. You've helped a lot of people including myself.

I steer clear of cashews because it's hard to stop eating them! Also, they are relatively high in carb (compared to many other nuts). If you want to see a great video about how they are grown, harvested and processed I recommend a recent edition of the KZbin travel series "Gone With The Wynns", a terrific Texan couple who live full time on a sail boat and are currently in the Philippines. They toured a nut factory and there is a heck of a lot of work involved in turning a wild cashew fruit into a handful of cashew nuts. No wonder their cost ain't peanuts!

I agree totally regarding Facebook. I tried joining some keto groups there, but gave up because reading other comments sometimes brought steam pouring from my ears! As you said, there are ways to show how something can be improved without being nasty and insulting. I think that many of these people feel that commenting anonymously allows them to be as rude and inconsiderate as they wish. There’s no one to retaliate because it’s all confined to a part of their lives that doesn’t necessarily impact their daily physical associations with people. Likely, they wouldn’t be so rude as to say the same things in person. Unfortunately, or fortunately, we become what we practice. Some day, the venom they restrict to those about whom they care little if anything at all, will start spewing all around them, alienating those they want to keep close. I have seen it happen. Prescription: Think kind thoughts, use kind words, do kind things - be/ become a kind person. You are a kind person, thank you.
