Starship Troopers is one of my favorite movies of all time! So you can imagine how hyped I was to play Helldivers 2 for the first time and see all the inspiration it took from this film. Anyways, here is why I love it! Also this video was meant to come out a month ago but it was delayed because of copyright issues.

@timedraven117

I love that scene, because in the book, Rico actually see's the man off duty pull his prosthetic legs out from under the desk, and asks why he wasn't wearing them. The recruiter's response was "I don't want anyone to be under the illusion that this is a safe or easy job." This make more sense when you realise the book Federation is in fact very open about the fact that you're basically becoming a state slave for the duration of your service, and you can leave at any time if you want. But as Napoelean said, "A soldier will fight long and hard for a piece of colored ribbon." Which all makes a lot more sense, considering that Starship Troopers was written based off of and so soon after World War 2, when all those crippled war vets came home if lucky, and many others didn't at all.

The movie does a really good job of tricking you into thinking that the humans have turned the the tide of the war with this capture, when in reality they just barely got a "win" here. It's a false flag to keep pushing for more people to join the war effort. I think the second movie does a real good job of not sugarcoating what the Federation wants; it doesn't want to destroy the bugs, but to control them and turn them into weapons.

I always assumed the large distance the meteor travels is a plot hole. This is the first time I hear someone bringing this up and if you connect it with a capable orbital defense system already in place.... Yeah, I think that is what Paul Verhoeven was going for. Good point!

Except that....the Bugs have a BRAIN bug, which can absorb any info from the brain it injests. Theoretically it could have absorbed enough info to know: 1. Where earth is 2. How its orbital defense system works 3. If there is a blindspot anywhere on the planet. Hell, the Bugs even ambushed a station, used the brain bug to call in for human reinforces, and then hid to ambush them again when they arrived, and the humans fell right into it. Because of the Brain bug, they are as smart as us. It isn't a plothole.

Ok, the movie messes up the timeline in the movie to confuse the viewing and to suggest that it was the humans at fault because Verhoeven thought the Federation were fascists and so wanted to portray them as such when in fact if you carefully watch the movie, you'll realise that it was the bugs that were the aggressors... This is the correct timeline of events in Starships Troopers as told by the movie, Mormons settled on a bug planet despite being told not to as it was a bug planet and they all got slaughtered for it, but the Federation didn't start the war because of that, no, the bugs saw that settlement as an invasion and so they retaliated with a bug meteor and then that's when the Federation go to war with the bugs and then at the end of the movie they show the new orbital defense ring to protect from these meteor attacks in the future. To understand the story more, you need to understand the books and Heinlein who wrote the books as he was a WWII US vet and he hated communism... The bugs in the movie are communistic, they think and act as a group and they dont understand individualism, so when the Mormons tried to settle on their planet they believed it was an act from all of humanity and not a splinter group. In this story, the Humans did no wrong.
@KoolKeithProductions

They filmed starship troopers in my hometown when I was a little kid. All of the battle scenes were filmed in a dried out lakebed called Hell's Half-Acre, in Wyoming. A lot of the people around town too were cast as extras and theres so many stories about all the drills and training they had to go through to realistically make the movie. Some people still have body armor and guns too. They realistically made 1000 sets of body armor and uniforms, and then I cant remember how many they made but the Morita Assault Rifle was actually designed as a real rifle. Obviously it fired blanks not bullets, but its why a lot of the effects look so good. Its not CGI laser guns they are shooting, it pushes the line as close as possible to a real war movie. Also different movie, but one of the big actors from Paul Veerhoven's Movies named Michael Champion (Old guy with White Hair and Aviators from Total Recall, he was chasing Arnold as Michael Ironside's partner). Mike spent the rest of his life in my home town. My friends and I signed up for a boxing class like 10 years ago, and we were watching Total Recall before class one night when I realized Mike was the guy from the movie. I ran to class that night like OMG YOU WERE IN TOTAL RECALL! Mike just goes OMG I KNOW. I short circuited, I wasnt prepared to be right about any of this as I grew up in the middle of nowhere Wyoming. XD Everyone around Paul Veerhoven though has so many stories though, and holy crap are they all so badass.

One interesting aspect from the original book (I own a copy of the novel and have read the entire thing) is that Federation service wasn't strictly a military service like the movie makes it. In the book, a term of service could be spent doing ANYTHING the Federation gives to you, even counting the hairs on caterpillars. Also interesting is that in the book, Johnny Rico's real name is JUAN Rico, a play on the term "Johnny Rich Boy". Also, he is Filipino and he even speaks Tagalog as his native tongue, although this detail is only revealed later in the novel when he reunites with his father. For its time, the Starship Troopers Novel was quite progressive.

Not to mention the military did everything in its power to DISCOURAGE people from enlisting because they only wanted people absolutely committed to the defense of society. That the bugs are painted as both highly intelligent schemers who can fling a rock a billion miles AND that they're weak and fire randomly is exactly how Umberto Eco says fascist states portray their enemies: both overwhelmingly powerful and pitifully weak, because they need to be considered a threat (to keep the populace in line) but the fascist state has to consider itself inherently superior. Glad you touched on that point.

@@Scott3387 a hive mind is different from emergent behaviour. Ants, bees, flocks of birds have emergent behaviour, not a hive mind. The group behaviour comes from watching each other's movements, from conventional communication, and from simple rules like matching velocities or reinforcing pheromone trails. With a full hive mind the Bugs _should_ be able to have every warrior-caste Bug under control all the time so no random firing just fully coordinated tactics all the time because they'd be literally thinking the same thoughts.

@@williamchamberlain2263 Perhaps 'hive mind' is being used in a fantasy sense here. I got the impression that the bugs were basically the Tyranids from 40k. They could operate on a feral level alone but needed synapse creatures (brain bugs, and queen bugs in the semi canon sequels) to coordinate. They are not the borg with instant understanding across the galaxy, they just have the ability to communicate through the network and perhaps that has a range but I have no evidence for that one.

You cannot force someone to do anything without the threat of physical harm or detainment. It would be nice if we lived in a world where we could all just discuss and debate all our problems away, but we still live under the basic understanding of violence being a natural consequence even now. When I first watched this movie I knew there was more too it than what I was seeing, but I didn't understand what that was. But there was always something in the back of my head telling me that what I was seeing wasn't the entire story. There was nuance but I couldn't piece it together. Over the years I got the full context after rewatches and stuff, but I can't help but to admire how subtle the underlying message is. (maybe a bit _too_ subtle after a few rewatches). It was a unique experience because not too many movies make you feel that way; that there is a _true_ meaning behind the obvious meaning. Not just that there's a lesson to be learned, but that you actually have to dig for the lesson because part of the movie is actively trying to trick you into not realizing what the lesson actually is. At the time, for such a goofy action movie it's a lot more in-depth than I think most people realized.

Lmao the false flag theory. My dude; in the books, the bugs have regular advanced technology, and they unequivocally attack Earth first. But since Verhoeven didn't bother to make the same enemy, and just had the bugs be mindless animals, he still needed the event to trigger the war Rico's goes to in the books, so the rest of the plot could happen. The asteroid isn't a false flag, it's the best explanation the director came up with, hoping nobody questioned it

Holy shit "colonies and outpost set up"? It was just an independent outpost set up NOT on Klendathu by private Mormon ppl, not the military. And instead of engaging in diplomacy, the bugs outright massacred them all. The moral fault of the war is of course with the bugs wtf is this video hjahaha

Casper van dien even commented in a interview about the uniforms in firefly, but in practice they reused it because it was cheaper, but deep down in the world of head cannon they are all connected

I have read Liu Cixin's Dark Forest... I completely, with no joking or anything, justify the invasion of the bug world. In fact, that world should probably have been completely destroyed already by this point of the story.

I have watched this movie way more times than what's normal. I really like it. I've never once considered any of these points. I've always enjoyed it as a mindless "violence solves everything" kinda flick. I'm not sure I'll ever enjoy it the same way again now and I'm less unsure how i feel about that.
