This compilation video looks at every Stone Cold Steve Austin appearance in the Reliving The War series during 1996, meaning every single Steve Austin match and promo gets discussed during his WWF debut year. Steve started his WWF career as The Ringmaster and he was managed by The Million Dollar Man Ted Dibiase, but after altering his character, winning the 1996 King of the Ring and beginning a career changing rivalry with Bret "Hitman" Hart, Steve Austin began his rise to the very top of the wrestling business.

When all the millions of Hulkamaniacs got older and outgrew the cartoon gimmicks and stale hero/villain storylines, Austin was right there for us. As far as pro wrestling fans, we were an extraordinarily fortunate generation, definitely.

100% agree. He was so driven to succeed during that period and everything he did, from ring work to character work to promos, was on point. He absolutely embodied the character and because of that everyone bought into the gimmick and backed him. Austin says it all the time on his podcast: you have to believe in what you're doing or the audience won't care about you.

Every single thing Bret did looked believable. Punches, kicks, high flying moves, taking bumps, selling, he made it looked like an art. Everything was so crisp, and he didn't need to constantly throw himself off the top ropes and outside of the ring to get a reaction. His ring psychology was second to none

I also want to say his technical skills were very underrated until the injury he suffered in Summerslam 97 where he had to change his style. He would do it from time to time.

I feel like the Pillman 9mm angle was executed as well as it could have been for a wrestling show. If you're going to do an angle with a live gun being aimed at someone, you can't do it in the ring. Stone Cold in 1996 was just psychotic enough that you could buy him actually breaking and entering during a TV interview. And if you could buy that, it's perfectly logical that a laid up Pillman is prepared to defend himself and his family, in his own home. It crossed a few lines that maybe shouldn't have been crossed in 1996, but it was good character development for both Pillman and Austin. The only downside is that it was a harbinger of the next few years, where character development and storyline advancement would more frequently happen outside of the ring, rather than in traditional wrestling matches; in retrospect, I believe that soap-opera style of booking did more harm than good, in the long term.

Stone cold returned in Wrestlemania 38 to face Kevin Owens to sealed his legacy. When a wrestler is aging and realizing that his/her momentum is heading towards a slow pace, it's better for them to hang the boots for good so that their legacy is not tarnished. I always loved how Bret had Steve’s number.. And the only one Austin ever ran away from in certain situations.. The psychology was perfect.. Stone Cold despite being the toughest S.O.B just did not have the skill that Bret had and couldn’t beat him.. But would never stop and never quit.. This obviously worked perfectly and was executed so well at WM 13 in the greatest match in pro wrestling history along side Taker/Micheals at WM 25 and Hogan/Rock at WM 18.. Steve basically owes his entire WWE run to Bret Hart.. Even more so after Bret left because Bret basically created the Mr. McMahon character which set Stone Cold up to have the greatest fued in pro wrestling history.. People wonder why Bret has never been able to keep go if Montreal and I think part of that is because he could have had a similar feud with Vince after that.. Montreal was not a work but after it happened Bret and Vince should have taken a second to realize the opportunity they had and Bret should have seen the lightning in a bottle he had instead of punching Vince and leaving..
