Gotta quick story: Did S and C for a kid off to wrestle NAIA. Good wrestler but never been on a proper strength program. He is 30% stronger than he was 14 weeks ago. Deadlifting 335 for 6 reps at a walking weight of 172. Started at 185 for 7. Has only been wrestling twice a week all summer, we concentrated on strength. We have a D2 kid who comes back to wrestle at our club during the summer. Same size. D 2 kid used to kill my boy, but my kid absolutely rag dolled him last week. The only difference is he is much stronger.

@shawnreed6895 you love to see it, there's still a surprising amount of high level wrestlers who don't touch weights and could easily go through a similar transformation. Best of luck to him!

Thank you for the tips since my traps are bigger in respect to my other muscles. My back looks hunched, my thumbs are inward, and I can’t put my arms straight up. I should work on lat development to counteract my traps correct?
@geoffkaminski10 күн бұрын
@Fanhous the lats also internally rotatate the shoulder, which would make the problem worse. You want to spend some time strengthening your lower traps, rhomboids, and external rotators while foam rolling and stretching your traps, pecs, and lats. You can still train the tight muscles, just make sure you're doing exercises that really lengthen/stretch them, like deadhang pull ups for your lats or deep dips to open up your pecs. Hope this helps!

Knee pain sucks,. I had the same problem and couldn't squat for years because of knee issues and relied on DLs to keep up leg strength. Finding out the root cause was a tough puzzle and was like peeling an onion because once I fixed one issue something else popped up. Long story short, my entire lower body was an unbalanced clusterf*ck and it took over a year to un-F everything that was F'ed up.
@geoffkaminskiАй бұрын
Happy to hear that you figured it out even if it took awhile. It's kind of a catch 22 because I think squats are one of the best things to strengthen your knees and ankles, but if you mess one of those up, you're stuck just deadlifting

Dumbest comment i ever heard about sumo. This is a dude who knows anything about working out. I have actually done emg on sumo and works the glutes and hamstrings about the same level. Also the sumo is better to work the adducters which applies to wrestling. Learn basic anatomy before you start educating people on youtube.

What exercises would you recommend for a better Single Leg Takedown
@geoffkaminski6 ай бұрын
Drilling it is the more important part, but the exercises from my Top 3 Wrestling Strength Exercises would cover it. Deadlifts would make sure your opponent can't break your posture when hes trying to defend, front squats would make sure you have the leg strength to shoot/stand up with the leg, and rows/pull ups would help you hold onto the leg. Obviously there's more but that's a good start

I do BJJ and wrestled in highschool, I found that trap bar deadlifts were the best deadlift variation for me: they're easier on the back and a lot easier to recover form so I could do more volume/intensity without it interfering with my sport. There's a myth that it's a squat which was disproven by Greg Knuckles
