In my TKD days,they teach you sidekicks first before spinning sidekicks,turns out it's much harder to master the sidekicks alone,took to much flexibility and joints manipulation.

If you see in the video, the person receiving the kick rotates his body slightly, so it can roll the impact away from a single spot. It'll hurt less when catching the kick
