Many, many years ago I planted an herb garden which I kept adding to every year, with winding pathways of cocoa mulch and flat stones. My husband was putting a new roof on our house and one day he called down and said "Gloria your garden is so beautiful!" He never paid much attention to it on the ground but looking from the roof he saw the design and beauty. That lovely memory came back to me when Martijn noticed the chestnut tree.

@@servius3362 believe it or not, it's for real. His place is actually on a trail which leads to the top of the nearby mountain and a mountain retreat/restaurant where we had lunch and where we were trekking that day. As I mentioned, it's also quite renown among us as a great place where to swim in summer, since we don't have a sea nearby.

In the film "Big Night" one of the closing scenes was the 2 Italian brothers in the kitchen of their restaurant after having fought with each other, verbally and physically the night before. No words were spoken as one brother scrambled eggs and made toast for them both and they ate silently. The love and appreciation for one another was implicit, without the need for words. Seeing Martin and Fabio seating at the table, exhausted from their day's work reminded me of that scene in the film. If I remember correctly it was shot in one long uninterrupted take from one vantage point.

Absolutely breath taking. I cannot imagine the sights you see every day. As you walked beside the vacant homes of long-ago families, you could hear the children and their pratting about in laughter, the bells tied around the necks of their small flocks being led to their daily places of eating and resting pleasure, the clamoring of a household readying themselves for the day. You could smell the smells of food that no longer are prepared by a busy mother thinking as she cooks about the laundry she will do by hand that day while bread bakes in the old stone oven. There are so many scenarios, but the people and their families were all the same and way to busy to fight the worlds woes. Thank you for bringing the past alive and bringing back the memories of those long forgotten.

Martijn, you're explanation on why you shouldn't use cement with stone exactly applies on why you shouldn't use it with wood. I'm worried about the damage caused during the next 10-20 years. What I've learned during my own renovation project is that cement on wood is like caries on teeth. Damage is not instantly visible, but caused in a matter of decades.

Time seems to stand still in the videos, or at the very least be slowed significantly. There seems to be no rush or hurry to get to the end of the effort but rather an enjoyment of the journey. A lack of self-imposed time pressure takes us back to our childhoods when we knew no such thing. Many thanks for that.❤

I too have been watching since the beginning. Watched the other videos while waiting for new episodes. I love your style. I think maybe this video is my favorite. The house near the river caught my eye before you paused to take a look. I was thinking higher doors the balcony and the basic style were great. If I were younger and still able bodied I would love that house and the location. The feeling of camaraderie with your visiting friends was the perfect mix with the solitude. As with the cow bells, it is comforting to know one nearby even as we seek peace and solitude. I hate for each episode to end.

Hey Martijn, just an idea for moving heavy things. I remember my dad built a large extension to the house with no machinery. I think you should invent a wheelbarrow with a motor attached to make the load lighter. The roof looks amazing already. You are both very clever and so hard working. Looking forward to next week's film. Thanks. X

@Ruth A very short while ago Martijn explained why wheeled things, such as wheel barrows, don't work in that terrain. It is too uneven. Too bad. Could save a lot of muscle. I trust that He has weighed all the options and has come to the right decision. Cheers.

I was waiting for this video so much. Strange atmosphere around. Holiday. Working hard to solve old heavy problems. It is really nice knowing I am not alone getting phisically tired for the house and my confort like you do.

Every week I look forward to these little snippets of your adventure - and am glad you invited us along! Thank you - such peacefulness. Your lunch is my lunch, it is what I have almost everyday. As I watch the car, the trailer and that sad wheelbarrow, I am always wondering which is going to breakdown first! They are all used so well ...

Great effort you're bringing into this! Compliments, you're proceeding very well with your plans, given you have helping hands only sporadically! Little hint for the concrete-machine: We normally use some rounded stones (a half bucket) and water to clean it. The stones help losening the slightly dried concrete effectivly from the metal "forks" without manual work.

Hi Martijn, I've been binge watching hyour journey of transforming the land restoring the derelict cabins in your Alpine property since I discovered your channel. I truly admire your work and mostly anstained from commenting on things since I'm like year and a half behind from what's been happening in your vids. But one thing I just saw in chapters 31 & 32 compels me to finally write a comment. I wished someone told you to at least to tar the timbers you used for ring beams before pouring concrete on them. Because cement will never stop acting on wood and beams will decay beyond recognition in a decade or so [pressure treated and chemically dipped/protected timber may last up to 25 years]. Good luck and be well.

Doesn't need to catch rain water as his water is piped in from water off the mountains above him. (P.S.: watch some of his early videos concerning his source of water & how he gets it over to his garden, shower, etc. and after digging a trench.)

Beautiful river view with the rocks & of course the breathtaking Alps. You think 🤔 of the most unique projects like the picnic table & benches. Perfect to go with the cabins on your property. Hear the bells so I guess the cow 🐄 herd is still there. Great video 😃🙋🏼‍♀️🇺🇸

You are working like a Trojan! The love that is going into restoring the building, bit by bit because it’s yours is pure dedication to getting it done right. That roof will last a life time because of the care that has gone into it. Your grandfather would of been very proud of you, working it out as you go along. Looking forward to next week’s video already! Thank you for sharing your journey.

Great work Martijn, great progress on the new roof, you make everything look so effortless when clearly it isn't. I think that your calm, steady and thoughtful approach is what creates this illusion. Would love to see an episode showing how you create these masterpiece videos. I have no idea how long it takes you to create a video, but I would love to find out more about the process. 👍
