In this episode of Brad & Lex, the drums, the snare, and gritty electric riffs activate Brad's signature "side to side sway" while Lex cheerfully absorbs Mr. Mellencamp's enjoyable pain executing her jolly movements until the time is right to introduce her "prayer bop" for all to see until Brad presents the risque truth to Lex's innocent ears in which pain was not included in the memo.

It has a sexual meaning but I also think it's the emotional pain two people will put each other through when together, some couples will have more drama than others but it's never a straight road in a relationship. God did they play this song relentlessly when I was a kid.
@pssthpok2 жыл бұрын
I always assumed it was more emotional rough-and-tumble, kind of like Tom Waits in "Invitation to the Blues", where the act of ending a relationship is often an invitation to the blues... and so is starting one. Also, if I ever get the opportunity to get into a 'sink your teeth right through my bones, baby' taken literally relationship, I would be looking for a fire escape.
@jakr4t2 жыл бұрын
@@pssthpok Nice angle on the song. I like it. Also, nice to see a Tom Waits listener. I have been pondering trying to get Brad and Lex to listen to some Tom Waits.

Mellencamp's record label pushed him into using the name Johnny Cougar for his first recording. They didn't want him using Mellencamp because it wasn't marketable. Eventually he was big enough to force them to at least let him switch to John Cougar Mellencamp, and later he was able to drop Cougar altogether.

This song brings a tear because it's that passion sharon and I had. When we were teens if we got into scrap everyone would say that's never gonna last and of every friend we had we were the only ones who went the distance. 44 years and would be going on 52 had she not passed in 2014. I could never have that kind of fucking passion with another person, and yeah sometimes it hurt so good.

John was one of the founders of the Farm Aid organization. He wrote a very moving song about the plight of small farmers during the Reagan years. It's called, 'Rain on the Scarecrow.' 'Small Town' is another hit from the same album.
@jono88842 жыл бұрын
" The song was first conceived, Mellencamp claims, in his baby's crib. John claims to have had an epiphany with a girl named Tiffany the day before who had uttered the phrase "Hurt so good" referring to an acupuncture treatment she was receiving from John's paternal grandmother. He then repeated the lines to Green and they finished the song very quickly." Wiki.......some things hurt but are pleasurable. I suppose masochists ....leather and whips etc. would qualify.

On his 2018 Plain Spoken DVD, Mellencamp talked about what inspired this song: "When I first started playing in rock bands, I didn't realize how crude and mean other fellas could be. How crude they were with women and how crude women were. That led me to write a song called 'Hurts So Good' because I was playing in these bars and I just could not believe the lows people would go to with each other. The thing that surprised me is that it fit my personality perfectly. I fit right in with all that." He also goes on to say he wrote that song in 3 minutes in his shower as a "joke" type of song
