I compete in the USPA. I have the state bench press record in the 198. I always self unrack. The unracking is when my body acclimates to the weight.
@hawg4276 жыл бұрын
That should happen when you do your warmups. You will expend unnecessary energy unpacking heavy wt. The key is to get a good liftoff. when I used to compete I usually always had a liftoff from the same people I trained with.

SO true!!! That small amount of energy exerted in the self lift off can mean the difference between getting 575 and missing it by an inch!
@David_Whitney6 жыл бұрын
@@hawg427 I set the height at a level where I'm only lifting it up an inch. I've tried the handoff and it always a shock to receive the bar over my chest. It's like I'm realizing how heavy it is. When I unrack it myself I don't have that problem.
@kolecarterbenches6 жыл бұрын
Well deadboy600, I trump David's State record with 7 World Records and 13 National records and a #1 ranking by powerliftingwatch in the over 50 SHW Raw Bench for the last 3 years!!!. LOL!!! Sorry I could not resist that. No offence David. It is a preference thing. Bottom line. Just like how some people love suicide grip and some people cringe when they see it. Some people have a wide grip and some people have a very narrow grip. Hand offs are the same way. Personal preference. I love them. Well not LOVE them, but I do prefer them.

Im no powerlifter but never liked liftoffs. I train alone and allways unrack myself it lets me know if its to heay. If I cant unrack it no way I could bench it. Really useful to see why you guys arch your backs. I dont do it never will but I understand why now.
@dn37724 жыл бұрын
yeah its not necessary to arch super big unless youre tryna bench as heavy as possible

Bryce was my volleyball coach in High School. Now he's one of the most useful tools I have as I'm getting really into power lifting. Pretty remarkable that he was as active coaching as he was while he was still training for competitions. Didn't appreciate it fully until now. Had to have made recovery tougher to be coaching a team sport full time.

Helpful. My shoulder was hurting from self-unracking because I was losing scapular retraction, and had the bar around my forehead rather than my nose. Watching your video helped me solve my issues.

Very informative! I always self lift(though my numbers are very much a beginner's). I've always read that your eyes should be below the bar though so my unracking tends to give me a couple more inches in to the press position, I think I will have to give this a try with having the bar lower down. Can you think of any reason why you wouldn't?
@richardcopersroommate89286 жыл бұрын
Whitebushido I ve been doing it too and nowadays I m literally grinding out the unracking part as the weights get heavier ..
@kolecarterbenches6 жыл бұрын
I only self unrack when I do not have someone to lift off for me when I go heavy. It sames a small amount of strength for the press to have assistance. Makes a difference between 6 reps of 500lbs or 7 reps sometimes. I have just gotten used to different types of lift offs. I even have people have to do one side then the other when I am in the 550s and 560s. When I self unrack I move up slightly on the bench to save my labrums. I tore a labrum going from too far back when self unracking. I do balls of my feet only and never do flat foot. It works for me. 7 raw World Bench records in the last 3 years and 13 National records, I must be doing something right. just saying. I am used to light lift offs, heavy lift offs, one side at a time lift offs. The benefit of saving that small amount of strength is well worth it for me to have a lift off.

today i was benching. but i couldn't unrack the weight weird enough. i did the same weight 2 days after and it was easy and all i did 3x5 and then drop sets. maybe it was a lack of recovery? i lowered the weight since i could not unrack it, droped like 20kilos and did triples with a challenging rep

Maybe not legal in comp. But I lift my butt off the bench and as I set my butt down the bar unracks almost by itself and comes into possition with out doing anything with the arms or shoulders.
@dessertstorm74766 жыл бұрын
yeh its way easier to unrack with ass off the bench, probably because you can arch more so you're pushing the weight more perpendicular to your body, rather than out and up
@lanidrac6 жыл бұрын
It's legal in comp. They won't give you the start command until your butt comes back down to the bench.

@@brycebyte statu quo*
@rettmyers70216 жыл бұрын
It’s not that it’s revolutionary, it’s that a lot of people do it in compromised positions. I don’t know how many videos I’ve seen of shoulders give out or dislocate due to a bad self unrack, and that usually leads to more injuries when that weight crashes down on the lifter.
