The difference in sounds you're describing with how low and round her sound is, is because she's using false cord growling. It's very different than fry screaming. Both are super common techniques in heavy music. With fry you have to essentially push the air through the vocal folds while they're clamped shut, resulting in a more strained sound. With false cord you are keeping your vocal cords completely open so they don't touch at all. That's why false cord (what she is using here) sounds so round and full and un-feminine, even when high pitched, because it's got very little vocal noise unless it's a conscious decision to use your vocal cords underneath. That's why it's also super easy to switch back and forth between false cord and singing because the vocal cords don't get tired. Just some harsh vocal theory for you in case you're interested :)
@ryanexsus4 жыл бұрын
I was gonna add to that, because false chords do not produce a "pitch" rather, the change in mouth shape is what determines whether it sounds like a low death growl or high screams.
@ViktoriaVision4 жыл бұрын
ryanexsus Yes, I just meant “high pitched” as in higher sounding to the ear. They’re not technically pitched because there’s no vocal noise. But being a harsh vocalist, I can say that it’s a little more than just mouth shape. It’s also based on throat elongation and creation of space at the back of the throat. But yeah mouth shape definitely helps more easily funnel the air to sound higher or lower.

Cheers. This is the kind of information I expected from the actual video.
@dominicfrabotta5654 жыл бұрын
@@spiritlevelstudios TBF, most vocal coaches don't study, or understand much about growls, whether its highs, lows, screams etc. Especially because it is a dangerous technique to learn, when you're not exactly sure on the correct way to do it. Gotta love the algorithm. After a year of searching on Jinjer reactions daily, I'm still getting ones that are years old. This is a really good one. I love it when knowledgeable musicians have their minds blown by Tatiana and the gang! And you're catching the groove. It's awesome how throughout all those time changes, it grooves hard. The meter changes aren't done for the sake of being weird, like in math rock. They serve the song and augment the expression. It took me a while to figure out that chorus. For a while I thought of it as one long measure of 20. Then I realized 20 is divisible by 4. And sure as hell, it's in 4. It's the craziest 4 I've ever heard. But it's in 4. Rock on, Jinjer Army!

Fun reaction - subbed. The live recording session was actually for their new (in 2017) drummer, most of the vocals are off the album version of the song. That said, I've seen them twice in concert and they are at least as good on stage if not better. It seems like they give 100% in the studio, but 110% on stage for the fans. I'd recommend Judgement & Punishment one-take vocal performance which seems totally raw with even a minor error left in. Perennial live at the Wacken open air festival is also an epic performance but with a bit of post-production tweaking to add some subtle vocal layers that aren't in the bootlegs of the show. Tatiana always loved singing and says she sings almost constantly. She had a few months of lessons in school, but never had the discipline or drive to do anything with her talent until she was 15 and someone introduced her to the music of Otep. She was shocked to learn Otep Shamaya is a woman, and had an intuition that she could shock people like that. She started singing cleans in various bands to build her clean singing foundation when she was 15. Then she started practicing growls at 18, while continuing to do clean singing in a number of bands for another 4 years (Jinjer is her 8th band), before starting to perform with growls in the band she joined shortly before being recruited to join Jinjer. This is just a bit lower than her most comfortable growling range, and she can go significantly lower than this. I'd suggest checking out Pit Of Consciousness live in Kiev at some point to see how low she can go. Kudos for pointing out the skills of the rest of the band. They are all superb musicians. Only Vlad has formal training in music, and he has played a big role in their composition process on the Micro EP and Macro album that they came out with after he joined. Eugene is one of the best bass players in metal, and is also their manager, as well as being a competitive amateur Jujuitsu practitioner who took silver in the Abu Dhabi qualifying tournament in Kiev last year. Roman on guitars is the least flashy, but he is a seemingly endless fount of diverse riffs that are a key aspect of Jinjer's sound. Cheers!

Great reaction. The reason that Tatiana's growls/screams don't have a pitch is because they are voiceless screams. That's also why they don't damage her voice at all. At the low end she's using false cord screams which are done with the vocal folds open and utilize the false vocal folds. Because the vocal folds remain open, false cord screaming usually has a very dark timbre and low sound. Higher up, she uses fry screams which are done with the vocal cords held together under significant compression (but not producing tones) such a that only a narrow stream of air passes through them and up to the false folds and the soft palate, rattling them to produce the sound. Fry screams can be identified by presence of harmonic overtones and a much brighter sound. Floor Jansen of Nightwish can false cord scream as well (Nightwish - Yours is an Empty Hope live Wembley for an exampe) and Devin Townsend is a great and well known fry screamer (Devin Townsend - Kingdom for EMGtv is a good intro to him).

Metal vocalist here, came to the comments to talk about false chord growling but got beat to the punch by ViktoriaVision lol. There is a bit more to false chord growling as far as technique goes, good breath support is very important as is placement in order to do it without hurting yourself; I did see that you caught that she's lowering her larynx as part of this. Been enjoying the reactions man, if you'd like a good example of a male vocalist doing both singing and growling of this type, I'd like to suggest the band Opeth - Harlequin Forest Live at the Royal Albert Hall

This sort of music is not normally my thing. But about a year ago I came across Elizabeth Zharoff's (Charismatic Voice) reaction to this video, and I fell in love with Jinjer. I was into some more commercial metal when I was a youngster in the 80's, like Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, etc. But it's not something that interested me as I matured. This band has completely intrigued me. Aside from Tatiana, who is an obvious powerhouse of a front person (check out their live sets), the band itself is really great. As for her false fold scream, atonal as you mentioned, Lolli from Fairy Voice Mother describes the tone she gets like that of a slide flute. She elongates the vocal tract to create more or less room for resonance.

This song is specifically about a duality - the astrological pisces symbol is two fish, jumping in a circle head to tail. Her lyrics echo that feeling, as does the structure of the song. The almost upbeat, innocent, friendly side and the (self)destructive side, embodied both by the same person (and band, by extension).

I heard in a few interviews that she took some vocal lessons when she was 8, but she is mainly self taught. It took her about 4 years to perfect her extreme vocals. The normal ways to go about doing the growls and screams didn't work for her, so she figured out her own technique to make sure it didn't affect her clean vocals. I'd suggest Perennial (live at Wacken) as well. Great display of her singing and the band as well live. To explain a little bit of how Tati can get her voice so low, she's actually not using vocal fry for her low screams (she is using some fry in her higher pitched screams though). Instead, she's using what metal vocalists call "false chord vocals", which are atonal screams produced by vibrating the vestibular folds above the larynx to generate the distortion as opposed to the true vocal folds as one would do with fry. This is the kind of scream you'll usually hear out of death metal and deathcore vocalists, though some do use fry or both. An example of a normal sound that engage the false chords would be a deep, rattling sigh. Some folks also discover their false chords by trying to bark like a dog. By taking either of those sounds and adding proper breath support, resonance control, vowel shapes, and a bit of compression, you can get remarkably deep sounds from people with otherwise high voices.

IMO one of the most talented (and beautiful) singers on the planet. She recently did a one take vocal of their song "judgement and punishment" I'd recommend watching that if you're interested in seeing more.

Both you and Mike have very honest and fun reactions. Thank you for including discussion on metre and the technical skill of the rest of the band. It often goes overlooked when people see and hear Tatiana for the first time. I've been a fan of Jinjer since their first album and seen them live 3 times. They do not disappoint! 🤘😁
