That’s quite the oversimplification. The first question high school students should ask is: do I want to work in an office for decent pay or do I want to work outside, in a machine shop, factory, restaurant, etc for much lower pay than I deserve? To get an office job, which a lot of people wish they had, a college degree is almost required. Of course if you’re well connected (read: rich or powerful parents) you might not have to work a day in your life, but for us lower and middle classers, we will have to work. If you choose an easy degree, you’ll find yourself better off as a server, otherwise college degrees are the way to go for anybody who wants any sort of economic stability. Office jobs also provide minimal manual labor, which gets leas fun as you age and more stable schedules (9-5 on weekdays.) I won’t lie and tell you that either route is fun. Maybe if you’re in the 5% of the field that your “passion” just so happens to line up with the limited professions out there. The rest of us just fake it and take our 2% yearly raise.

With the internet being at everyone's disposal, college IS bad.
@weeveferrelaine6973
@weeveferrelaine6973 3 жыл бұрын
@@f.p.5410 Even affordable colleges are very, very, very rarely a good investment. Better curriculum is available for free online (or very cheap), taught by better teachers than any professors you are likely to have. If you're lucky enough, living at home during your higher education is an option that will save you immensely. Not having to deal with multiple other students means that 100% of your education time is spent educating yourself as well, and not being wasted waiting for your turn to have the educational focus. Considering the wasted time alone, and that you'll have a significantly worse education at a university than what you can do for yourself (combined with that training yourself how to learn is an objectively better thing than staying used to being taught by other people), even if college or even university were free, both are not going to be worth it. You get those same connections college says it gives from teaching yourself, you get a faster education, a better education, and you save money. That boils down to essentially that the economy hasn't caught up yet. The point of college isn't the education anymore, it's that it gives you a piece of paper that makes certain professions want to hire you more. This piece of paper is what your tuition pays for, ultimately, and everything else is just smoke and mirrors to try and convince you your education was a premium thing, that only the college could have gotten you. For some people, that paper is definitely worth it, and it will get them a job that will more than make up for everything else. But in real terms, once the economy catches up to reality, college is going to die out, and will be replaced with certifications and trade schools. Originally college was a place to share free thought. The internet is arguably significantly more free with which ideas it lets you express, share, and learn, and college has lost sight of the purpose of being a forum for reviewing differing thoughts. Because it has reduced itself to just education, and mostly in part due to the internet out-competing it (for those who are capable of self-teaching), I do believe, "College Bad"

It’s not true, it’s making fun of college from the movies and media. Which is nothing like college for the most part. And despite a mortgage on your back, most people have access to a job market which pays much higher salaries than high school level educations will ever earn you. There are some exceptions, which require skills or military professionalism which do not require a degree. or jobs involving risk or mobility allowing some to reach similar incomes. also the idea that an education is to prepare you for the real world is a loose one at best. that being said the private market designs much of the education systems in our country. this is done in a way similar to supply and demand. often left for the young to decide for themselves. higher education is where people waste time, if it can even be called that. Just because you didn’t go, doesn’t mean you aren’t intelligent. we are all pretty damn stupid together, no reason to pretend there’s much of a difference between anyone at all when the best detection methods we have are based on averages. College like the real world doesn’t give you many chances either, and unlike how it is painted most people go there to get better paying jobs. and it’s the bare minimum for most modernized cities these days. unless you want to work in the massive services sector , so you can break your neck brownnosing people with an MBA all day pretending like college is about politics. Yea.

I wish I didn't go. I studied my ass off for gender studies and all I got was a bill of $50 grand and still climbing every day. But with the pandemic I'm laughing at them. They can't collect and I don't care if I pay them (which I never will). HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Ok the gender studies was a joke. I was going to be a meteorologist. They kicked me out for nothing. All I did was say I better go home before I kill somebody. Before I got home the cops were there. So for kicking me out of school for nothing, I'd say they owe me money. Just because in the same day there was a mass shooting at another school doesn't mean I would do the same thing.

I recently graduated and I'm trying to pay off nearly $30,000 of loans. I made some mistakes (majoring in math being one of them, not looking for jobs before graduating being another), and so I'm now making $13/hr as a math tutor. I'm saving up everything I make at my job to put towards my loans. I currently live at home so that I can do this. If I don't get a better paying job, it will take a total of 18 months to pay off my debt. I'm trying to look for work, but it's been about 4 months since graduation and I've only gotten 2 non-rejections. Neither have moved forward... I think there's something fundamentally broken about our educational system. I don't think people should be allowed to take out so much in loans with so little oversight. A person shouldn't be taking out loans for an education that won't give them a good financial future, and most colleges barely do anything to make sure that their students are actually ready for the workforce.

I feel you, I’m a math major as well and I’ve also had some regrets about majoring in such a theoretical and research-oriented subject. Fortunately for us, we can definitely make ends meet with our degree. I’m currently trying to get a job in data science, which relies on knowledge of probability and statistics. You could also look into becoming an actuary, accountant, or anything financial (the finance industry seems to like math majors). Although in hindsight math might not have been the best subject for us to major in, we can land solid careers with some self teaching. I wish you the best of luck!

Hey I know this is youtube comments so they're cancer but if you're really struggling with a math degree, seriously just learn how to program. Grind leetcode for a few months, get yourself a dev job doing development anywhere that will take you. The first year to 18 months will suck. After that you can apply to normal dev jobs and make 60k + per year. You'll pay off your loans by year 2/2.5 of this plan if you do it right.

Dude I literally feel the same way, I majored in math and was told I could "hardly go wrong" with the degree, and that many companies were "clamoring" for STEM majors. Bullshit. I graduated last summer with a 3.965 GPA and can't find a job. Went to a couple job fairs my junior year with plenty of local companies and none seemed interested. Currently work at a grocery store, as I have been all of college, and have no idea what I want to do. There's no sign I'll be moving out of my parents' house anytime soon. I'm going to see a career counselor soon though. It just seems like I was lied to about the importance of my degree. I thought that I'd take my math classes and just go with the flow and it would lead me somewhere. It didn't.
