They hired bodybuilders to play the predators. The original predator was played by Kevin Peter Hall. A very tall man indeed, but lean. The added bulk of his costume didn't make him look goofy. And he carefully crafted his character's body language. The AvP predators bumble about like drunk toddlers.

Not just that, but the designs were even intentionally made more muscular to have a "superhero" look with super big chests. It looks okay on the lead Predator who actually was a 7ft basketball player, but on the short Czech stunt guys the proportions get hilarious.

that was an idea that was cut, at one point Ridley wanted the alien to kill Ripley in the shuttle and then start operating the ship and then you would hear the alien speaking in Ripley's voice, he told Fox his idea and the next day he had like 5 producers on set to stop him, because in the original script the whole thing with the alien being blown out of the airlock in the shuttle never existed, Ripley escaped in the shuttle and the alien was killed when the ship self destructs.

Them killing off Newt and Hicks is a slap in the face to anyone who cared about those characters, and even the director of Alien 3 to this day still hates that movie with a passion. The only reason they killed off Newt and Hicks was to get Ripley alone again. Arguing some BS reason that it's closer to the original, when the original was nowhere near as depressing and ended on a light note with Ripley escaping with her kitty is laughable.

Best point brought up, IMO: The problem with sequels and spin-offs is the simplification of the lore. I NEVER for one second thought the Predator's species were entirely dedicated to hunting. The rocket jockey was just another truck driver who ran afoul of the Xenomorphs. All corporations have evil in them... 'the Company' from the original was just another company. I groan every time I hear "it's a jungle planet" after the scan. I think you guys have brought such points up previously, t'is why I appreciate being witness to your decent into alcoholic nihilism.

The Company from the Original is Weyland Yutani. They have a different logo, but its the same company. You can see it on the computer screens. As the predators, the comics establish that they are an advanced society and the hunters are just one caste (albeit a very powerful one)

It's one of the things I utterly despise about Prometheus; binding humanity, the xenomorph and the jockeys together makes the universe feel very, very small. Wasn't it also Weyland, too? I really loved originally how it was never explained what the creature in the chair was, where it came from, were there more on the ship? Did they find the Alien, or were they transporting it? Were they aware of humanity, or were we so insignificant we didn't even appear on their radar?

I hate to do the whole 'the expanded universe is better' thing but I genuinely think that the old Aliens comic series was a much better sequel to Aliens than Alien 3, and I like Alien 3. It really brought things to a head with the Aliens basically infesting earth and the military complex actually trying out the idea of using a queen Alien to usurp control of them. It was super interesting and saw Newt grown up, Hicks basically being disabled after his injuries in Aliens. It was awesome
@nutyyyy
@nutyyyy 4 ай бұрын
I think if you're going to drag out the series pointlessly then it would be much more crowd pleasing to do more Aliens style action, colonial marines and the company trying to study the Alien. Some of the comics are definitely strange and unsettling, which is what you want to go for in an alien film. After Aliens the genie is out of the bottle and it's hard to go back to a single alien hiding in the shadows, though a straight up remake of Alien with the same cinematography and only seeing glimpses of the Alien would be far more effective than anything we actually got, though it would be ultimately pointless. I think the logical next step in the series should have been a film set on a giant space station with more Aliens action. Whether or not Ripley, Newt and Hicks were involved is another question entirely. As much as the happy ending from Aliens doesn't fit the tone of Alien, I do think that undermining it in the next film isn't the best way to go. So maybe the next film takes place later. But the problem is that without Ripley you lose that connection to the previous films.

I hated this movie when I got dragged to see it in theaters. But that was mostly because I heard Alien V was in early preproduction but was cancelled when James Cameron found out they were making AvP and he pulled out of Alien V because they thought they were making a joke out of the franchise. I watched it again a few years ago and was surprised to find myself sort of mildly entertained. It's exactly what you would expect if, using no creativity, someone jammed together Aliens and Predator, and absolutely nothing more than that. But it's not terrible.

there is lots of lore,.. lol they sounded like Kathleen Kennedy on StarWars on that one,.. she also didn't realize books and comics exist. These are Tribal / blooding rituals for clans, fighting different types of Aliens using different lifeforms to make hosts/embryos is part of their rituals, they involved them ever since they first fought them and learned about how they "breed"... Predator race prides gladitorial strength, they are "high tech" (from our POV) barbarians / spartans basically. The story of this movie is more or less taken from the "Deadliest of Species" series. The cover must have inspired them, because they use the female getting handed an "alien tail spear" in this movie in the exact same composition. The Pyramid is from a time when Antarctica was free of ice,.. about 13000 years ago (it froze during the northern polar cap melt)

The guys aren't giving this movie enough credit. The pyramid is not a climatic hunt, but an initiation for predators. The walls shift because it's like a predator training course, this is what they do to become "blooded hunters". That's why the predator marks the woman at the end, she's a graduated hunter. And they use humans rather than other animals because of the adaptations given by the human host - a prey with increased intelligence. In the movie the aliens work together, like human hunters. I think this movie is rather good for a cash-grab. I'd take this over that thing Shane Black put out.

this is not a hunt to be blooded, its clan initiation, blooded is a passage of adulthood, the initiation is like making your grade in the armed forces. The pyramid is from a time when there was no ice, roughly 56000- 13000 years ago, before the north pole melted and the south pole froze. This movie is lifted from 2 series that got smashed together really,.. Hell on High Water, and Deadliest of Species.

I am using this part of the internet to say that Jay is right about Alien 3(But nobody should ever be tricked into watching the 'Director's Cut' version of it because while it adds shots, it competely wrecks the climactic moment of the movie). Also Alien was about one group of unprepared truck drivers coming into contact with just the weirdest cargo ship where the driver(?) died at the hands of the cargo. Cold Frying Pan => Fire. Aliens are rats that got loose. Every movie after the first just says to you 'Hey...do you remember the rats? Cool. Me too.'. There are Alien stories that could make a new movie/tv show and be interesting, but I'm not sure they're going to make a movie about a shlubby guy whose taste for Royal Jelly tilts him too close to the wind. Especially nowadays(Shout outs to the people who have the Star content on Disney+, I hear not everyone gets that).

Klingons where attacked by a space faring civilization in their medieval era, but fought them off with guerilla warfare. I don't think they created their first warp drive, I think they stole it, figures out how to steal more and only got around to figuring out how to make their own after meeting the romulans. Predator doesn't bother with justifying this of course, and in the original movie is better for it... but by movie 3 it's a bit stretched.

Prometheus reused the blue alien species in the ship. That actually also happened in the original as well. So no Mike it wasn't the Zeno morphs' ship. It's like Ridley Scott went back after watching his own movie and wanted to add an explanation to who the blue aliens were, making it convoluted.

Rich also thinks a species that can survive the cold vacuum of space with no damage would be stuck on an arctic ice island and wouldn't just swim wherever it wanted.
@AmazingKevinWClark
@AmazingKevinWClark 2 жыл бұрын
@@Shizn0id well if it's stuck in ice, there's still oxygen in ice so if the organism is still a live in the ice, there's a possibility it can survive on Earth. Just because an organism doesn't need oxygen to survive doesn't mean introducing oxygen will hurt it. It might have other effects on it though. Now the other way around is a problem. Where your body has been conditioned to needing something to live but is not receiving it will eventually kill you.
@Shizn0id
@Shizn0id 2 жыл бұрын
@@AmazingKevinWClark first off you just went on some tangent that has nothing to do with what I said and second you thinking that the cold of earth will do anything to a creature that can survive indefinitely in fucking space, you know the coldest place in the universe? xenomorphs are cold proof, dont need to breath and can swim faster and better than any land animal alive. so again an arctic island is nothing to escape from for them.
@AmazingKevinWClark
@AmazingKevinWClark 2 жыл бұрын
@@Shizn0id wow chill out, I was just contributing to the thought. I neither made an argument for or against what you said. You're mostly correct however there is a possibility that an organism lives on a satellite object close to the sun without an atmosphere. In which case it survives in a vacuum but also with heat and light.

Ridley Scott was writing a script about Creator vs Creation (Man vs AI), and saw that Fox had given Blomkamp the greenlight to make a new Alien movie, which would have retconned Alien 3 and Resurrection to take place 20 years after Aliens. Ripley and Hicks return as the main characters, and he had concept art and a script drawn up. Well, Scott didn't like Blomkamps work, and didn't want the franchise in his hands, so he told Fox he wanted the next alien movie instead. Naturally they pulled it from Blomkamp and gave it to him, the franchise veteran, and he wrote up a script for a prequel to Alien. The original script, Alien: Engineers, actually wasn't that bad for a rough draft. It held true as a prequel, with them landing on LV-426, and it was much more of a horror movie than a sci-fi fantasy with dumbass characters. The problem is that he was still stuck in the mindset of Creator vs Creation, and tried to shoehorn the philosophical David storyline in wherever he could. That's why Prometheus is such a mess, because he wasn't writing it to a part of the Alien universe, but to tell the story he wanted and just have it set in the Alien universe. The more he rewrote it, the worse it got, and eventually we ended up with the trash it became. Horrible characters, nonsensical plot, not even taking place on the same moon Alien was on. It got even worse in Covenant, where he kept trying to tell the David story but also make it an Alien movie, and somehow it seemed super rushed but also so slow, again with dumbass characters. I'll never forgive him for not giving us the opportunity to have a Blomkamp Alien film with Sigourney Weaver and Michael Biehn returning.

Predator weekend warriors funnily would fit. Predator from 2 planned on putting his King Willy trophy head over his fireplace at home. Pred 1's posing for a photo, holding a skull and spine up in triumph, back of the photo you see Big Momma Dutch stalking him! Do you reckon they have fishermen-like banter? I caught this guy, he must have been 400lbs and 7ft. yeah right, where's the skull and spine then. oh you see, I vapourized it with my plasma caster. 20:40 - Called by his wife... Honey can you pick up some eggs, my mother's coming round!! Urgh that loud mawed bag!! screw it!! [taps the countdown initiator]. \/\^ ^^\/ ^^V\ V^/' Just thought, we always assume the predators are male, what if the males are more gremlin sized! :D Any film in either franchise from the C20th is excellent or acceptable. AvP's worth a single watch! As for AvP 2, you've got more chance of seeing a cloaked predator than see what's going on in that; think they left the cap on; In this, no one can see you scream! Predators had an interesting concept. Any other films in those franchises are much like Alien 3, not that there good in any way, but that they were mostly dead on arrival and should be chucked in to a foundry!

Hmm, feel like you guys are not giving this movie enough credit. It certainly isn't great, it probably isn't even good, but a lot of things you commented on is explained clearly in the movie that does make sense in this separate universe (since this movie doesn't take place in either Alien or Predator's universe, it's just an AU)

Not gonna lie. "AVP" is actually one of those rare: "So bad that it's good" movies. For every reason mentioned in the video, I just love wasting hours of my life watching this schlock, and don't spend a whole lot of my brain cells pondering over all the varying impossibilities and foolishness of it. I just want to see aliens kill each other in a grudge match barely involving human beings. This movie actually succeeds in doing at least that much.

Why not just create a typical predator film. It opens with a ship crashing. A predator seems to be slowly hunting a group of people (maybe soldiers). Before you know it, one or two of the survivors are killed and looking eerily killed as someone would be by an alien. The people find the crashed ship and here we get solid evidence of the killers not being the predator, but aliens. We see that a small group of predators has been witnessing this, out of nowhere 3rd party attacking the survivors they were surveillancing. The Predators slowly learn about the aliens during battles and by studying the carcasses. All while the survivors are stuck in the middle. Have the film end as the film does. By a making a predator and survivor take on the remaining hand full off aliens for a climactic final battle. Here the final two will win, but the predator will turn on the human. Once the predator recognizes the fighter as a non threat it will leave with its fallen kind and leave earth. All that’s left behind is a survivor who is alone and defeated by the obstacles they just had to overcome. This way allows the action to feel more like the sequel Aliens film, while the structure of the film feels like a predator story. It blends the two and you get a little bit of both sides. Every side of the conflict losing something, while leaving the predator as the defining winner among the foreign species. Maybe for sequel bate, end the film with the remaining predator analyzing the bodies of its fallen friends. It glosses over a predator with a hole in its mid torso. Black screen. Don’t show a pred-alien rather save it for the next film.

The movie was in development since 1991 and the original script titled "The Hunt: Alien vs. Predator" was actually based on the first 4 comics into a movie but it was scrapped while they were developing Alien³ and Sigourney Weaver hated the idea so much, she demanded to the studio that if she was gonna be in Alien³, Ripley would have to die. So thank you AvP.
