I’m a sales rep I drove a Pontiac solstice every summer for 4 years putting 100,000 miles. It used the ecetec motor form the Colorado pick up (which Scotty said was a good motor) I never had a problem. The interior was cheap very cheap! However if anyone is looking for a poor man’s weekend rag top, definitely recommend.

I LOVE my 2007 Saturn Sky 2.4 L, standard transmission. The friend I bought it from is older like me and did PMs like clock work. All highway miles and garaged. It is in almost perfect condition inside and out. I had a new water pump put on at around 99,000 miles, ( not an issue) and had my mechanic replace anything he wanted, he put new timing chain tensioners on. He said the engine has at least 100 K trouble free miles left on her. Now days she is my toy up here in the twisties of The Ozarks! She handles like a dream and leaks/ burns zero oil between changes, ( I check it every time I fill up and average 29 MPG). I think the ones with the turbo are the problem child. @@captain6368 The M97 engine (the 3.8L fitted to 997.1 Carrera S) is better in many ways BUT it still has the IMS potential failure, although less likely than the M96. However, and here's the rub, in the M96 a replacement IMS is a simple retrofit, but in the M97 it's an engine disassemble job...if you can live with the very rare (assuming you've dealt to the IMS already) but real and expensive M96 engine problems, the payback is a fantastic value 911 that embodies all that a 911 should - and a very analogue experience. I don't know what your customers were doing to those Solstices, but I've been in community since 2004 and they are generally very reliable, with a couple well-documented and inexpensive-to-repair issues ($125 water pump being the most common @ ~50k miles). Being parts-bin, most parts are still available new. My first one had 20,000 miles put on it in just the first year without a single problem. My second one is at 50,000 miles and I've only had to replace the water pump. I know guys who have run these things 150,000 miles, and a large portion of the community drives these often and hard. Very few of them are "lawn ornaments" or "garage queens," aside from winter storage. I am really not aware of any issues with them "just falling apart" *at all*. Also, the aftermarket scene is excellent, and the community is very active and supportive. These things have been documented to death. And... they are cheap. Way undervalued and a HUGE bang for the buck. You won't find many other cars for under $10k used that can *bolt on* upwards of 450hp. Those Ecotecs are rock solid engines.

I'm the GM of a Toyota dealership, and we had an 2010 Audi S5 V8 come in for an oil change that we had sold a few years back. Well, we did the oil change, all went fine, car ran beautifully, but the car LITERALLY broke down on the express lube guy in the car wash!! The fuel pump just went out in the middle of the car wash and it was just left sitting there until my shop foreman came and got me, we pushed it out, contacted the owner of course he was mad but I had to tell him he was responsible, and not us. The lemon couldn't even make it out of it's OIL CHANGE!!!! To make a long story short. I have no clue why my express lube guy did this, but he locked the car with key and when he unlocked it, the door lock actuators FAILED and we couldn't open neither the driver or passenger side door. We had to climb in through the trunk to open the doors. (Mind you this car had 61,000 miles on it and me, the General Manager is climbing into the trunk of Audi with a tow truck behind it, beside the showroom with customers videoing the ordeal.) Finally, I told the guy look, this car is a money pit and it's time to upgrade. Sure enough, a few week later the guy returned and traded that junker in for a 2019 XSE Camry. Which he's much happier with. Moral of the story is, DON'T ANY AUDI and plan on owning it for any serious length of time. I've heard and seen horror stories you wouldn't believe. Unless you want to look dumb like me and this trying to get into his car that failed in our carwash for crying out loud! What a day that was.

The bean counters at Porsche took over in the late 90's with the 996, Boxster, and Cayenne. The Porsches before this time were of very good quality and would last decades. Just close the door on any older Porsche and compare it to a newer one, if that doesn't scream quality than nothing will. If you look at Porsche's track record over the last 15 years for engine reliability, it's pretty sad -- IMS failures, scored cylinders, "D-chunk" cylinders, RMS leaks, etc. Not exactly confidence inspiring they know what they are doing...

No it's not their parts are expensive and they're high maintenance. Even the cheapest Porsche's like the 924 and 944 have expensive parts and require a ridiculous amount of maintenance. I learned first hand when me and my buddies bought a 944 with a blown driveshaft coupler. We turned it into a dirt racecar and we didn't make it through a whole race season because parts were so expensive, even used parts.

Porsches make some of the best used cars. Parts are sometimes more expensive because they were built with good parts and those cost money but they also tend not to break often. I've only been in the used car industry for thirty years. I'm glad to hear your dad did well on his car. I remember back in the early 90's when I sold new Pontiacs we had the Le Mans. Absolute garbage. A commercial account we serviced demanded we sell them a Le Mans. We did everything we could to try to switch them to something else, but they weren't having it and bought the Le Mans. The car somehow managed to make it to two hundred thousand miles. I have a 2007 Saturn Sky and the only issue I've had is the cup holder (easily fixed if you have access to a 3D printer, BTW) and the water pump. Honestly, for a 12 year old car, I'm kind of amazed at how few issues I've had. Heck I've had fewer issues with it than I have with my Wife's 2010 Corolla and that's newer and is one of Scotty's precious Toyotas.
@AWHNJ
@AWHNJ 5 жыл бұрын
My wife has a 2007 Solstice GXP we bought used in 2010 with about 7,500 miles on it after her 2006 was hit from behind by a Mercury Mountaineer SUV and eventually totaled (the SUV had to be towed and the Solstice was driven home... who woulda thunk?)... It now has 100K miles on it and has had its share of problems recently. It's in the shop now. The turbo is blown, the water pump is now bad for the second time, one of the lifters may be bad, and one of the struts is shot. I thought I had all the problems licked when I cured the misfires by changing the plugs and coils, and the overheating by replacing the thermostat and temp sensor a couple months ago. But it eventually started throwing high temps again. I don't have the tools or experience to do the water pump myself, so right now I have a specialist working on it. I am going to spend some cash. but we are doing new turbo, water pump, timing chain, O2 sensors, cam sensor, crank sensor, struts, and brakes. I was able to buy all OEM parts from a local dealer's online store for far less than they would charge in the shop. Also got a few AC Delco parts from RockAuto and a couple other stores. Some of the parts aren't necessarily bad, it's just a "while we're in there" kinda thing. I am most disappointed the turbo is blown after 100k, thankfully I found one brand new OEM online for $630. It's also disappointing the water pumps typically fail at 50k or less and it's a $1,000 job to replace a $100 part. That's probably the biggest thing I hate about this car. I'll be flushing the coolant more often to prevent it in the future. I'm thinking once per year maybe. All things considered, the car is 12 years old, was my wife's daily up until a year ago, has 100k miles on it, has been paid off for 6 years, seen its share of abuse from me driving it, and hasn't been too egregious for a sports car. But it's certainly not the best nor is it low maintenance. I have a 2003 Dodge Neon SRT4 with over 210k miles and the original turbo is fine and so is the motor, and I abused THE CRAP out of it. The solstice is fun though, gets lots of compliments, and is quick as hell with the turbo. I love that it's rear wheel drive and 5-speed manual. Oh and my cup holders are broken too. The one on the passenger side by the glove box has been broken almost since we first got it, and I cracked the dual cup holder in the center but was able to super glue it so it still works. Looking forward to getting it back,
