S3: Her reaction was golden. The people trying to blame her for leaving is a bit weird. The mom quite literally tried to hook her son up with the neighbor right in front of his girlfriend, who I'm assuming is meeting you for the first time. This sends a pretty clear message and I think Op handled it pretty well. She didn't scream. She didn't pick a fight. She just calmly gathered her things and left a place she clearly wasn't welcomed. How no one even noticed her leaving though is a whole other matter though.

This is them trying to break her and the boyfriend up so he can get this premarital girlfriend. If OP did make a scene and called them out, she'd be well within her right. But the fact that they're just nitpicking what she does and making her out to be this unreasonable and terrible person is borderline controlling and manipulative. That's not the kind of family you want to be stuck with. I actually kind of feel bad for the boyfriend cause it sounds like he's just a doll for them to play Cupid with, and OP is just the "wrong pick" for them.

She says shes above the drama, but.... shes all about the drama. Leaving discreetly with the food is not the issue, its her actions afterwards that deserve her the ESH/YTA. She wanted him to have a dramatic "How dare you disrespect OP, we are leaving" moment. It didn't happen. Now shes taking it out on Boyfriend. Have the spine to leave him instead.

Op took the time, money, and effort to make food for a party that didnt care about her. I dont think she was strictly in the right, but she was the lesser of three assholes imo. Reddit's logic is always you handle your family. He didn’t do a firm job of it, so she left rather than remain in a space where it's clear that she isn't welcome. She came over, met them for the first time, BROUGHT FOOD AND WINE, and mum's response was to try and set him up with someone else. They didn't care that mum was rude and offensive to the point that OP left, only that the goodies went with her. Did they really expect her to stay when it was clear that she wasn't wanted? It seems kind of entitled to be so rude to someone, make them feel unwelcome, but then still expect to benefit from their generosity... Confirmation bias being what it is, OP was right. When mum brought the neighbour girl over under the pretense of her family coming as friends, she apparently threw her son at the girl to the point that she got awkwardly weirded out, and dipped early. BF's single, non-emphatic, "I'm not interested" did NOTHING.

The dude in story 2 has no spine. They could have thought she was in the bathroom. Who in their right mind thinks an adult is gonna be bothered by something, not say anything, but expect her Man, who did say something to actually make a scene, and wheb he doesn't she sneaks out of the House without telling him. Since when is running away at slightest slight or push back a queen move ? The only options in a conflict is not A) cause a scene or B) slip away unnoticed and send passive aggressive texts to say ''lol idc, but actually I do bc I want you to follow me and I'm texting you'' How about being assertive and establish boundaries and use your words like a big girl ?? Or you know like normal adults do? The whole thing is childish asf. I would expect a teenager to react like that. You only react by standing up and leaving when someone is being confrontational and to make a statement. Like I'm making a stand here that I won't accept this disrespect and I am leaving. Sneaking out completely takes the statement out if it. Ridiculous. I wouldn't follow out a girl who acts like this too. Like she leaves you there, and you're supposed to devine what she didn't like bc she's not telling and the she also leaves and she doesn't even tell you totally disregarding you as her partner. You get a text, with ''lol your mom always like this ? I'm gone btw I waiting for you. I'm expecting you to sneak out you own parents house BC I say so'' So now you've got something to say ? You couldn't say what bothered you to my or my mom's face ? Like are you serious ? She walked out without telling him and just like that he's supposed to jump and follow or he's the bad one ? Maybe his mom didn't know they were serious, maybe his mom had already invited the neighbor before her son told her he's bringing someone ? Or maybe the mom's a nag and she could've you know said something or ignored her. How does she think the whole family is gonna think about her ? ''so Where's bf girl ?'' Ah apparently mom said something she didn't like so, the girl went to the kitchen and took back everything she brought and left without saying anything to anyone. He didn't know she was gone.'' TF ?? S1: NTA. The parents can’t have it both ways; first they kick him out because he shouldn’t depend on them anymore as an adult, but then go to the place he’s been staying at and getting mad when he’s not charged rent because it “undermines their authority”? What authority? You can’t force your child to be independent from you but also go out of your way to manipulate how they find independence. The parents want it both ways, and that’s just not feasible.

It's that she left without talking to her bf because the bf didn't make a big. So OPs decision to just scurry away in the dark of night with the food makes her seem like a petty overdramatic bitch, but being a sassy bitch like one commentor suggested wouldn't had made her look good. Either taking her bf aside and tell him how she wants him to confront his mother or she herself telling the mother that she doesn't appreciate the mom trying to set the bf up in front of her. Both those alternatives would have been more mature and fair towards the bf, as frankly you can't expect that everyone will cause a huge fight during Christmas celebration in front of everyone, most people would probably done the same as bf and then perhaps talk with the mom after the guest/rest of the family had left. So yea that's why it's an ETA, at the very least she should have given the bf the option to leave with her

If you decide to throw your child out and force them into debt at 18, for no other arbitrary reason than you CAN, you don't get to get to make rules for the child you abandoned at the house they live in. 'His parents did it, he's fine' is a stupid, lame thought process, along the lines of something, something bootstraps. You only react by standing up znd leaving when someone is being confrontational and to make a statement. Like I'm making a stand here that I won't accept this and I am leaving. Sneaking out completely takes statement out if it. It makes it seem like if something happens, you don't like it, you won't even SAY anything and use your words like grown up and ditch the situation. Ridiculous. I wouldn't follow out a girl who acts like this too. Like she leaves you there, bc your mom was insinuating something when you clearly shut down, and she doesn't even tell you. Bc you didn't make the science she wanted you to make. You get a text, with lol your mom always like this ? I'm gone btw I waiting for you. So now you've got something to say ? You couldn't say what bothered you to my or my mom's face ? Like are you serious ? She walked out without telling him and just like that he's supposed to jump and follow or he's the bad one ? What about respecting her partner and telling him that she leaving again use her words to clarify the situation ? Maybe his mom didn't know they were serious, maybe his mom had already invited the neighbor before her son told her he's bringing someone ? Or maybe the mom's a nag and she could've you know said something or ignored her. How does she think the whole family is gonna think about her ? Where's op gf ? Ah apparently mom said something she didn't like so, the girl went to the kitchen and took back everything she brought and left without saying anything to anyone. Op didn't know she was gone. TF ?? @@greyscalesx How did you get that the husband shut it down? The husband was still unsure of if he did and when it turns out that he didn't and the mother still invited the neighbor girl to New Years he didn't pop a lid for his girl and instead got mad at her for not still going to a place that straight up disrespected her. He stayed at the party despite what was said. He went to the New Years party still despite what she later said about the neighbor girl being invited still and made uncomfortable by them. Like what messed up world does this seem like it was shut down. He ignored it and didn't even go and apologize to her for what his mother said to her face AT ALL. "Maybe she didn't think that they were serious?" LOL so you're telling me that you bring random girls to your Christmas gatherings and everyone didn't assure that you had a close relationship with her? A laughable excuse to use to cover the mother's ass. "Maybe his mom had already invited the neighbor before her son told her he's bringing someone." This was wrong by the way as it was only stated that neighbor girl only came around New Years and not Christmas. Also, you're going to tell me that she did that and thought nothing of the matter even as her son bring along a girl there. Sure. "Or maybe the mom's a nag and she could've you know said something or ignored her." It's isn't the gf's place to be speaking up about a problem with the family member. It's the boyfriend's as it's his family/home and she's a guest. Why must she be the one having to defend the relationship? Why does she have to set boundaries for this family for the bf? Why does she have to put on boxing gloves to fight for her spot or take the abuse while the BF can be allowed to basically just slide on through the blame or responsibility? He's the one that needs to do this as it will likely only be taken as jealous gf trying to be controlling if she goes to this other family that she just met and started setting down rules.

Those comments on Story 3 are ridiculous. BF's mom obviously didn't want OP there, so OP obliged her by leaving. She bought the ingredients for the two dishes she made for the dinner and cooked them as well, so they were *hers* and she just went home with all her possessions. I bet she took her coat and her purse as well. Why the hell should she leave both the cooked dishes *and the dishes/containers* in which she brought that food behind when she left? I guess she could have just dumped out the casserole and the dessert onto the kitchen counter, but that was *her* food. "If you don't want me here, then you have no right to the food I have purchased and cooked for you as a favor." As for all the complicated, involved, and witty put downs put forth in the comments, it's really easy to make up scripts like that while you're sitting at your computer, totally uninvolved in the disrespect being shown to someone else, and have the next three hours to write these scripts, polish them until they shine like diamonds, and type them into the comments section. No one on the planet-other than just a few people who are seriously odd or even weird-can be that witty, masterful, and creative when strangers have just insulted and disrespected them the way the BR's mother did OP. Robin Williams, yes, but he was fueled by Bipolar Hypomania and cocaine, which OP didn't have on hand.

She didn't appear to pressure him into doing anything just told him her thoughts and said let her know. Either way she's in a lose lose situation because her bf clearly wont put his foot respectfully but firmly down and regardless of how she handled herself that won't change the mothers disrespect of her. Story 3: NTA and I'd like to know how long it took them to notice Op was gone, cause if boyfriend only noticed when they texted him or when it was discovered that the food was gone then honey you have problems other than what happened with his mom that you need to discuss Edit: "You overreacted" "all you did was show your boyfriend that you're childish" upon first meeting her son's partner, his mom's first instinct was to talk about setting him up with another girl and to talk about how great she is. That plus how boyfriend _hesitated_ to so much as _talk_ to his mother about the stunt she pulled, I'd say OP didn't react enough. If I brought my partner home for the first time and my mom or another family member did that I'd _absolutely_ chew them out because of the amount of _disrespect_ it takes to do something like that to a person you _just met_ and haven't even held a full conversation with yet.

OP has strong boundaries. In no way is OP childish for walking out. The talk should have been on her bf and bf is a chicken shit so OP left.

They evicted their son so he is forced to be a adult asap. A adult can decide to take help from friends and family independently. So now, parents want to keep parenting their 18 year old they evicted?! Because he doesn't do it their way. It's a paradox.

2) What a horrible husband. So it's his wife's fault for getting a better job and having them move? Sounds like his mother started shit because they're moving and thinks she can stop it. He should've defended his wife and instead in front of everybody he actively went against her. He should feel ashamed. His wife reacted normally in my opinion. If I were her I'd contact a lawyer to be ready for anything and be prepared for more than that.

2) So I went to see his comments and he's completely trying to throw this against his mom and his wife and trying to keep away from any blame being posted on himself. Honestly at this point I don't even think therapy could help,I think the wife should take full custody when she divorces him, assuming she does, I really hope she does.

These parents that kick out their children and expect them to manage university AND a full time job, and supporting themselves? They don’t care that they’re damaging their child’s chances of getting ahead in life? I left home at 13, almost 14, due to severe physical abuse. I was homeless until I got pregnant and married at 18, to another black sheep who was 22. I tried to go to college twice over the years, but I couldn’t afford daycare. I had a second child 4 years after my first. My child’s father died when the kids were 7 and 11. I never really reached any financial success. We survived, partly because I came up with side hustles, like selling jewelry, getting discounted rent by fixing up older houses, and babysitting other people’s children. My parents are a PhD and an MBA, they own a farm. They drive cars worth two years of my salary. They refused to help me with textbooks the one time I was brave enough to ask, despite the fact that they were both supported all the way through university themselves. I cut contact after my mother told me I was “Too poor to breed.” When I called to tell her of my second pregnancy. All I hear when I hear “They’re 18 now” is that at 18, I was a child. I was getting married, but I was a literal child intellectually and emotionally. I think we don’t really reach adulthood until 25ish, and in some native cultures, you’re not considered an adult until you’re 50. (That tracks in so many Reddit stories!)
