Interesting story. As for overkill, who decides if something is overkill?🤔 Seems to me that the loser probably does. In a conflict there are usually two possible outcomes: win, or lose. When dealing with violent aggressors it's better that they lose and you win. Achieving this sometimes requires extreme measures, but the cost of losing to the violently aggressive enemy can be too high a price to pay, necessitating extreme measures to win.😲

As one of them, like the rest of the commenters here(assuming...) I'd like to believe that humanity has SLIGHTLY more standards than this when it comes to overkill, although unfortunately, I could see us all too easily losing those standards if we became a multi-galactic civilization. On a completely random note, does anyone here think the phrase "sir, there is a multi-legged creature crawling on your shoulder."(from star trek) will become a popular thing to reference once day-to-day life looks like like the show the quote originated from? lasty, I'm pretty sure by "multi-legged creature" Spock meant tarantula. Who here agrees with that?

i like that they did not just make the humans bloodthristy and crazy, but gave an explanation. a race that overs that large of a section of the universe would look at the small things that were listed as minor, because to them they would be, it would be like if bunnies were became sentitnet, and when we were asked to come in an remove a group of predators to them, we would probably not be polite about it, we would anhinliate them, because to us they are both so much lesser, but one is definitly more valuable than the other. its an interesting take on HFY.

I think the best way to explain our view of overkill. We were guessing nuclear warheads would ignite the atmosphere we felt it was a low chance but still possible and we still dropped bombs. We've fought each other constantly that when a soldier or a group makes a final stand they resort to the most brutal but effective ways of killing. Put survival on the line and overkill simply becomes a perspective of suggestion.

Humans will call something overkill once it reaches the point of redundancy. Like glassing a planet then quarantining it.

“The Scourge is the only thing I’ve seen make a human admiral queasy,” can be taken a few different ways: they’re afraid of the disease; or: they’re afraid of what they will have to do to *stop* the disease. Or both.

I'd argue that even despite of all the things stated they still don't know the true extension of overkill. I know that the upper limit of love is undefined. However, I do not know how far hate can reach, but it's not something that anyone sane would want to find out.
