Do you show somewhere where you empty the oil out of the hose - how to clean it? We bought a new pump and I don't want the hose oil to taint my food ANYMORE! So tired of the oil taste on everything . . .

Yes, I care! I’m an instruments technician and musician so nerding out! Fairchild made the most revered tube compressor of all time so interesting to see the lathe. Isn’t it incredible how Arduino is like the new tech Lego. That 10 turn pot is super cool, where did you get that?

It’s amazing such complex systems became mass producible. I’m experimenting with cutting vinyl again on a converted 3D printer machine after three decades of audio engineering and having fun designing a cutting head. Holding the torque tine so it doesn’t move in the wrong direction and cause distortion and noise is a challenge. Lathe Trolls is a great resource. Thanks so much.

I thought it was the worst one i ever tried. Edit: I just tried one with some really bland mashed potatoes and that was what it needed to tone down the herbs. I changed my mind. Not bad. Next time I'll try it with some rice.

Why not just put a small piece are the end if it's just about reducing the inner diameter of the fitting? Why go through the trouble of forcing in an entire length of tube?

This is great, pretty much validates what I was going to build with some shelly devices, ESP32s, or other ideas I have. How do you handle the vacuum if for example you already have two freeze dryers with a vacuum and you want to add a third? A better way to ask, how do you balance the vacuum between the two with a vacuum and the one without a vacuum?

No, it doesn't happen to everyone. And if it does it would be much simpler to shorten the hose.

Well, the thing is this food if packaged right will last for many years, and if you are out in the wilderness camping, you’re going to be pretty darn happy to have it. Plus, if you can’t get food from the grocery store and you need to get into your, freeze dried stash, you won’t be comparing, because you won’t have those other choices. I am so thankful for my freeze dryer and the ability to preserve food for years. Thank you for this video! It’s really nice to know that I can freeze dry shrimp

Found on the Net: In German (on packaging): Zutaten: 71% Erbsmehl, 7% geräucherter Speck (Speck, Speisesalz, Rauch), jodiertes Speisesalz, Geschmacksverstärker (Mononatriumglutamat, Dinatriuminosinat, Dinatriumguanylat), Speisesalz, Palmöl, Aromen, Hefeextrakt, Stärke, geräucherte Hefe (Hefe, Rauch), Curcuma, Raucharoma. Kann Spuren von Gluten, Milch, Ei, Sellerie und Senf enthalten. Translated in English: Ingredients: 71% pea flour, 7% smoked bacon (bacon, table salt, smoke), iodized table salt, flavour enhancers (monosodium glutamate, disodium inosinate, disodium guanylate), table salt, palm oil, flavourings, yeast extract, starch, smoked yeast (yeast, smoke), curcuma, smoke flavouring. May contain traces of gluten, milk, egg, celery and mustard. I make my own tablets, according to my own recipe, with fewer weird products than in the list above 😁 A real pea soup, according to my country traditional recipe, should cook for about 48 hours (!), and with a pig's tail. Yes... Hence the advantage of these tablets.

Are you getting the correct pressures when running all 3 freeze dryers at once? Maybe running 3 at once causes the freeze dryers to take longer to reach pressures?

Thank you! After watching other reviews and now your review, I'm going to buy some mountain house to add to my surplus food supply. I add picante sauce to my breakfast so flavor definitely shouldn't be a problem. I bet both Peak and Mountain House would make decent breakfast tacos.😁

I am freeze drying grilled chicken. I marinate with herbs and spices, leave it overnight and then grill/bake it for about 40 minutes at 350F. I then freeze dry it in my medium HF Freeze Dryer. The results are a bit inconsistent. Some of the pieces rehydrate pretty well (nice and tender) but the others are hard - almost to a crunch even after rehydration for 30min in hot water. Any suggestions here to get even and consistent results?

Hello Bryan, I’ve just seen your video, and now I’m a bit worried about my batches… I haven’t noticed anything too out of the ordinary… but how would I know if the oil has been sucked up into the chamber? I bought the FDer about two years ago in 2022 and I use the premier pump. The hose is black… so I’m unable to see what’s inside of the hose… if it were sucked up into the chamber what would the signs be? I took off the side of hose that attaches to the machine and didn’t notice any oil residue on the sides, but did notice a bit of residue on the other end which connects to the actual pump itself. When I remove the hose I can see the white ball bearing inside as well, but your video has me a bit concerned…. Thanks so much in advance!

Bryan: Interesting video. I am freeze drying some non-food items where I need more control over times and temperatures. Have you ever thought about how one could change out the control system to enable more traditional freeze drying recipes. (Times, temps, vacuum, ramp speeds, etc). I already have a Harvest Right XL that I bought to experiment with, and it works well enough that I would like to try to modify and use. Traditional lyophilizers are an order of magnitude more expensive. Thanks for any thoughts!

A lot of these comparison videos fail to pull the food out of the bags. I like that you pull all of the food out of the bags and compare the look, as well as the quantity of food in both. It really makes the difference in portion sizes apparent. The Peak skillet is also visually more appealing (for those of us who don't mind bell peppers). It's got some color pop and you can see the different textures in the blend. The Mountain House skillet looks like mash. I think I've actually had both of these while backpacking, but when you don't see or taste them side by side, it's hard to compare. Regarding the flavor deficit for the Peak (or any backpacking meal) part of my cook kit is a small container of Cajun seasoning. If something is a little bland, the Creole seasoning gives it a little kick and some savory saltiness. Seeing your review, the Peak really is a two person meal. I don't think I could finish that off. I tend to want lighter breakfasts on trail anyway. I would probably be more inclined to try to eat a meal like the Peak for a dinner. I mix it up like that sometimes. Curry for breakfast and breakfast skillet for dinner. Haha. The forest doesn't complain. Hahaha
