As far as the "pass" goes, I've lived in the south my entire life. Most of my friends were black, and they would call me the n-word in a friendly manner, and I'm white enough that I make Kenny G look black. I remember losing my shit one day and saying "if you're going to call me a slur, call me cracker" and my friend said "hey man, if a 'n-word' calls you 'n-word', that just means you're a cool 'n-word'." I still don't say it, because I just don't like how it sounds coming out of my mouth. Your mileage may vary.

I agree with a lot of Vaush's takes here, but I do thi k he has certain personal biases that make him somewhat dissmissive when talking about slurs. I agree that accidentally saying a word while singing isnt a big deal, especially if it wasnt yin your first language. I also agree that saying the word in the company of people who you know dont care is also fine since no one's getting bothered by it. It isnt a magic spell that kills a black person whenever someone non black says it, but I dont think its "being weird" to be bothered by a non black person saying it if it's not something you're cool with. Refusal to stop saying it when people around you made it clear that they dont like it is pretty crappy. Like Vaush himself said when talking about anti white racism, even if the consequences of you doing a thing are just hurting people's feelings, being willing to do that makes you a pretty crappy person, and people are right to be irritated by you. Around friends in private, its whatever, but saying it with the knowledge that some people who hear it wont like it doesnt make you a rasict, it just makes you annoying. (I'm saying "you" in a hypothetical sense btw. This isnt directed towards any one person). I get that Vaush grew up in an environment where black people were cool with it being said, and has said it privatley in the past, which makes his perspective somewhat biased. (Not invalid, just biased. He still makes good points). But keep in mind that the argument of "It was normal where I grew up." Is anecdotal, and not a great argument in terms of moral justification. In my experience, black people who are cool with non black people saying it tend to have some rather socially conservative beliefs, while black people I know who dont like it tend to be progressive. Its not hard to draw the conclusion that not caring about the word might be a socially conservative thing, and not something that should be considered the norm. However, that's just my anecdotal experience. You see? In conclusion, I mostly agree with Vaush, but I do this some of his biases and personal experiences scew his perspective somewhat.

I have always hated this debate so, so much. I get the N-word is a sensitive topic that everyone feels differently about, but we really need to separate the conversations about slurs in music and slurs when said as an insult to a minority. They are NOT the same thing, and pretending they are really undermines the wider conversation about the conversational n-word. Beyond that, though, I hate this debate because music should be a universal language. Like, on topic, the wide reach of k-pop is direct evidence that music speaks to other languages and cultures. If you feel like non black people shouldn't be able to sing a word, then it's hypocritical to put that word in a song intended to be heard, enjoyed, and repeated by a non-black audience. These artists can claim their music isn't intended for non-black people but it's bullshit when they're playing it on the radio and letting white people into, and even on stage, at their concerts - that music is meant for anyone they sell it to, lets not forget mainstream music is a product being sold indiscriminately. Music is meant to be enjoyed, it's meant for people to sing along, I think that putting any word in the song is giving the audience permission to say it in the correct context. It's NOT the same as conversational use because in conversation, the intent isn't for someone to be repeating you word for word, but that is often the case with music. When you sing a word in context, it's not directed at anyone, it's not said in hate, it's enjoyment of an artists work. Anyone who would sing a lyric as an excuse just to say the word, probably uses it as a slur anyway, lets not kid ourselves.

this is one thing i agree with you somewhat on. ive lived 10 years as a kpop fan and before stan twitter, fandom was completely different. i do not use twitter, but everytime i go there or see some kpop ytber quote some stan tweets i physically cringe because so many of these people have no idea what theyre talking about half the time. however, i will say that when i was at my peak teenage girl rabid fangirl phase, a lot of these types of people were on tumblr instead. but they werent as bad back then imo. im very conflicted because while i understand antiblackness is a huge problem in korea, ive witnessed these stans use literal racist asian slurs to call out one group, and then end their tweet with "but anyways stan *other group*" like wtf??????? as a korean myself, asian fetishism is a huge problem among weird ass koreaboos who treat my culture like some aesthetic and glomp random korean dudes on tiktok. then these "fans" say "well, black people cant be racist when the entirety of korea is ANTIBLACK". they will say stuff like "japan is better, at least they dont steal black ideas and try to write it off as their own" and then OUTRIGHT DENY DECADES OF JAPANESE IMPERIALISM that almost erased korea off the map???????? (and giselle is literally japanese so...) they'll say "kpop is a direct copy of black music", which isnt true and put a blanket over the years of american imperialism just to overstate the influence of black culture in korea and the supposed plague of antiblackness that is only present in korea. like yes, its an issue there, colorism is an issue, but how are you going to deny the role that america had in directly turning korea into the toxic capitalist dystopia that it is in the same breath?????? you can still be a xenophobe even if youre not racist......these stans care more about their own agenda, they do not care about the people that make the music they love. they say that korea has no original ideas, that koreans steal other cultures and claim it as their own, but never stop to think why a country that was isolated for centuries and then subjected to such brutal imperialism is trying desperately to appeal to those countries that colonized them. korea is not obsessed with the west, the west is hellbent on making korea obsessed with them.

with one foot in kpop and one foot in vaushism, i feel the need to give a bit more clarification/backstory: 1. Giselle is not the first kpop idol to do this, but probably one of the only idols who has lived in america / is fluent in english to do it. She attended an international school as a teenager and had black friends, she should be really familiar with the issue and mouthed it anyway. 2. This was a much bigger deal than most people expected only because she apologized, which is extremely rare for kpop idols. Even if they wanted to apologize, idols from Giselle’s company specifically (SM Ent.) have a reputation for being very silent when racial controversy (usually cultural appropriation) is criticized, or it is edited away and never addressed afterwards. 3. Many kpop idols are given a pass on this because Koreans overall are unfamiliar with racial dynamics, and/or do not have the english skills to understand why the word is harmful. As someone who spent a significant time in America, Giselle can’t really lay claim to these excuses. 4. B*bble is “Bubble”, a paid messaging subscription for idols to privately message their fans. the tweet censored it because fans usually post Bubble messages for free for other fans who can’t pay. Some people have gotten in trouble with the entertainment companies or developers for sharing messages/photos from Bubble onto Twitter. Not saying that this deserves the tidal wave of attention it got, just bringing more backstory for why this got the attention it did.

The argument over singing it in a song while non-black is one thing, but I really don't see how lip-syncing it is a controversy at all. How is mouthing it and not even singing it an issue? Is she supposed to also stop dancing while the word is said in the song?

@@rileywebb4178 i don’t think anyone’s saying that she needed to evaporate while the word was said in the song. if you watch any tiktok of a white person lipsyncing to a song with the slur in it, there’s plenty of ways to do it smoothly. as mentioned in the article, she knows to censor herself and she’s done it in the past. as someone constantly in the spotlight, on camera, and professionally trained to be a celebrity, that kind of slip-up is disappointing to her fans. i think the hard emphasis while she did it also rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. i don’t see significant difference between it being verbalized or lip-synched, i think the outcome and consequences would’ve been the same and all arguments still stand

A celebrity that slipped and said a word that's a common slang for brother (and, let's be honest, is an extremely arbitrary term with dumb rules that would solve a lot of problems by just not existing), is not the same as a fucking racist who would actually use much worse goddamn language and not apologize for it. These sorts of cancellations only work against people who are not racist, people who don't hide the fact they're racist don't care about "being cancelled" on twitter and they don't react with teary apologies and stuff so there is no point in going after them in the eyes of those "justice warriors". Yeah, being black and gay makes this situation really akward. Like yeah, people shouldn't just say slurs so casually 99% of the time, but it's never like "you said the Evil Word and now you've laid a curse amongst the community" Living in the south there's alot of white people that have grown up in communities heavily mixed with black culture. So every now and then they use the n-word by acdident or whatever without thinking of it. And sometimes straight people casually use the terms dyke or fag when their gay friends are cool with reclaiming it. There's boundaries, and alot of the times it's better to not say slurs much at all to stay safe. But there's context and it's really odd when people jump on eachother so fervently while actual bigots don't get the same push back. I can tell when someone does an oopsie or grew up with it and is actually being a jerk trying to hurt me.

But if a person used the word spick or kaffir on me I would immediately know that person is not using it as a term of endearment towards me, they're using it as a racial slur because those words are never in any context used outside of racial insults latinos don't call each other spick and black africans don't call each other kaffir, these are only racist terms.
