to clarify, you cannot change the position of the grains manually while the sound is playing? It seems the closest you can get to that is changing the start time in between triggers or changing the speed/direction of the scanning. Is that true? A bit of a bummer to me as I really liked the rest of it, but that might make me look for another device.
@undulations3 күн бұрын
@@tristan-deniet Well, I think I need to get it out and check that🤔. It's a good question that I feel like I should be sure about answering. I'll follow up with the findings. That said, do you use Koala Sampler (available on various platforms)? I like it a lot. Their treatment of sampling has gotten more "granular friendly" over time, and using it with a midi controller makes it even more suited (because the on-screen behavior is dragging around the sample edges, but with midi you can move the start [with a mapped knob] and the sample side stays fixed, so a slide-able window). It isn't automatic, ie scanning, but I think I've used AUM and some other app that automates midi out to hack some scanning. Thanks for checking out the video🙏🏼!

@@undulations Looks cool, but I'm mostly looking for a hardware granular synth. The microgranny was definitely attractive for the price, but I think just barely unusable for my purposes. There's really only a handful of hardware granular synths and most of them are very expensive, unfortunately.

@ Ever thought about a Model:Samples? I feel like I've learned quite a bit about granular since doing the M:S granular video on here, need to revisit it. Also, about Koala. I totally understand about wanting a hardware granular synth, was skeptical of apps in general - but Spacecraft Granular was the first one to really change that. Then Koala generally changed how I do a lot of stuff. I guess it's not really intended for audio editing but I like it for that. It also has DAW-like features that I really need to use more.

Hello, Inspiring content in your channel! ...I'm new to these hardware devices. I've mostly been a software user. So, from a structural point of view: does this sequencer allows to compose full tracks? I mean, is it similar as composing with a MIDI piano roll? And does it allows to playback compositions with many different fixed sections (A A B C C A...)...? 😋
@undulations2 ай бұрын
@@ColectivoLaberintos I guess it comes down to personal preferences about workflow and sound design. Maybe it's more like a tracker than a piano roll? Lots of parallels. I feel like there are probably some things like precise and continuous control of note duration and parameter automation lanes that a DAW can do, this device not, but the sequencer is generally quite powerful. A limit of 6 tracks but parameter locking (a type of automation) and fx can help make a really full sound. And being able to do it all from a custom hardware interface is really nice, a powerful aspect of this sort of box. As for longer works? Yes, absolutely. You can chain patterns and multiples of patterns together as a program - or do the jumping from A to B, for example, in real time (either instantly or at the end of a pattern, keeping in time). Beyond that, the randomization aspects of the M:C can allow you to make small complex loops that never quite play the same way, giving another pathway to longer musical creations. For example, I made a single loop that has randomization in the drums, chord stabs, and melody - I recorded an hour of it and enjoy listening to that on occasion. I think there is a Short of it on the channel, check it out as an example.

Hi Doc, I've had the idea of having the ModelCycles for a couple of years now, but I was focused on purchasing other synths/grooveboxes, a few days ago I finally got my ModelCycles too, the first Elektron machine for me. I had years ago with the drum machine but very little because it was used almost every day in the recording studio where I worked.. Cutting it short, once again I watch your long videos because although the machine is quite intuitive I found myself in front of a sequencer that was a little different from the standard Roland type so to speak; the greatest difficulty lies in making a continuous note sound without it being triggered by the sequencer each time when it passes over it. Its sound design is equally strange for an FM synthesis, in practice there are only six algorithms, but the biggest difficulty for now is understanding how to manage the envelope of a sound having in fact only the decay.... when I finish watching (another time) all your videos on ModelCycles you will see that I will have some questions. greetings from Italy🎛️🎛️

That sounds great! I'm just wondering if there's a way to slow down the beat to a very slow tempo without using an external sequencer. I love the sound of the Kastle 1.5, but I often wish it could achieve a slower, more meditative speed.
@undulations4 ай бұрын
@@sonicforest521 Hey, thanks a lot for checking out the video🙏🏼! Sorry this took a minute to reply to, I wanted to sit down and measure the minimum bpm for the LFO (stepped, specifically). Mine does a note change like every 53 seconds, which i figure to be somewhere just above 1/4 bpm. So, it's pretty slow as is, but I definitely see how you might want to have it even slower. One route that I've never tried (and not totally sure is possible) would be to somehow hack it slower - changes in the code or in some sort of internal timing circuit, idk🤷🏻♂️. People build Kastles, and maybe the code onboard is open source? That said, the next point to make is that the LFO Reset on the Kastle 1.5 isn't a "sync" input, per se. It just lets another signal reset the LFO instead of running its course. So, I'm pretty positive that you can't use the LFO Reset to make it run _slower_. I've done some stuff, just patching, that causes some really, really long notes, but I recall that setup to be unpredictable and not following a sequence at all. Anyway, as you know, it's really the no external gear part that's tough, of course. Some sort of MIDI-to-CV converter would open the door wide. I'd probably use an SQ-1 (or 2 of them for going super slow, see SQ-1 video on here if that's of interest). Sorry if this is no help. Wish I could help, but not seeing how🤔.

Ok, I see. So dmto create your three sounds, you used existing sounds and adjusted the parameters to make them kind of boring, then showed us what the parameter modulation does/how it works. It was a simple thing I was missing! Very. I appreciate your responses! I'm (obviously) new at this...looking forward to the next vid.

I probably missed something. In this best tutorial ever, Undulations loads kit 11, which he says he build ahead of time for the purposes of this video. How does one save an original sound to a slot (x6) to create a kit? Or even an unoriginal sound....Would I have to use a DAW or can it be done directly on the vDrum?
@undulations5 ай бұрын
@@laurenkenney9813 well, i can't recall if the kit and program saving/loading is shown in this video or the next one? but all sounds get made directly on the Drum. so, you can, for example, load program 16, maybe the sequencing patterns are blank, or maybe not? then you can do the load kit operation, just to see what the current kit is (the flashing led), the hit func to get out of that. so, say it's kit 16. then the 6 pads are the 6 sounds for that kit. you can modify those with the synthesis parameters, make 6 entirely new sounds. it you like the kit you've made then you can save it. now, if you save it to kit 16 then that's fine. BUT, if you don't want to write over kit 16, save it to, say, kit 15? this is fine, and program 16 will be using kit 15, just as you would like. BUT, that is a change to program 16, so if you just turn the Drum off or go to a different program, when you come back to program 16 it will still load kit 16, back to the original. so, what you need to make sure of doing, is to save the program if you change the kit number. that said, if you like the new kit but don't want modified sequences you can reload program 16, load kit 15, and then save program 16. i know this is sort of a mouthful. but, the 6 drum sounds are made live on the Drum, those sounds can be stored as a kit, the sequences are made live, and those are stored as program. then the last detail is to make sure that a program loads the correct kit. a lot of times you'll have multiple programs, say 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, all using the same kit - say they all use kit 15 - then with pattern chaining you can make a longer sequence and if you want to change a drum sound you only have to do it in one spot. there are also ways to copy sounds. i hope this helps!
@laurenkenney98135 ай бұрын
This is such a thorough response. I can't believe you answered so fast! Yay internet! Yay Undulations! I think either I'm not understanding something or I'm missing something very simple. When, in the video, you pop into your kit with the three basic sounds on 1, 2, and 3, with 4-6 at level 0. You made those sounds...then how did you save 1 to 1, the next to 2, and the last to 3? I see how you save the group as a kit....I'm just not smart enough to save the individual parts.
@undulations5 ай бұрын
@@laurenkenney9813 well, there really isn't any saving of the individual parts. when you save a kit it saves each of the part sounds as it is. i think the only way to, for example, make a new kit out of soumds from other kits is by copying and pasting. make sense? feel free to ask more questions and i will do my best👍🏻
