@@potatothorn The Bay Ridge Trail can be hit or miss. Some sections are really nice single tracks through the trees and then the next section is an access or fire road. The Long Ridge and Russian Ridge Open Space Preserves are fairly nice. If you're there on a really clear day, you may be able to see the Farallon Islands from the top of Borel Hill in Russian Ridge.

thanks we did, and went all over SF it's a great city... it's a good thing people decided to protect the redwood forests in the 1980s and on, it is crazy how many of the huge ones there once were vs are. Most places the stumps are gone and they hide the evidence of logging so you think the grove of Big ones is all that ever was so this is very educational showing what happened

@potatothorn4 ай бұрын
yes that's true ! Also this river travels mostly south to north/est. Most rivers in the hemisphere flow south.. even more odd there is also the mostly underground Amargosa not far away, it dead ends in Death Valley. That one flows mostly south then does a u turn to the north at the end. Two in the same area. glad you enjoy this.

The teeny tiny marine fossils (white) can be seen outlined against the darker rock sort-of mid-way between the tall dryfall and the junction with the Corridor and the approach. The fossils are about knee high to waist high inJanuary 2024.

Not a lot of information of why they ran that pipe and dammed it up. I've heard cranberry bogs, but an elderly neighbor of mine disagrees. Her family was some of the original land owners where my house is.
@potatothorn8 ай бұрын
the reason for that pipe is a mystery... my best guess is it was added to keep the water away from the highway/ but the lakes are pretty well known to have been a short lived attempt at cranberry bogs yeah... one article says it was all one big lake and split up for the bogs but more likely they are all man made or was only a pond. Ice skating on the lakes we could see tree stumps in all of them, especially lotus.
@TheTim169648 ай бұрын
@potatothorn great information, that makes sense because the neighbors did say she never remembered the bigs being there, so that makes sense that they were short-lived. A good resource for information is a website called historic aerials. You can look at maps and overhead photos from years back. The Topos show 3 lakes all the way back to 1904.

I remember when Wildcat Canyon was used as a shooting range for tanks, .50 cal and 20mm Etc up to 500 Yds or more. Tanks used to roll up Arlington Blvd from Richmond on their way to Rifle Range Rd. There was a pistol range as well right at the bottom. Area was a ranch before that with a ranch house, stables, corrals Etc. which were all meticulously erased from the area by the park service. I spent many days and nights there as a kid and as I said below, never once saw a Wildcat but was within inches of 2 cougars (at the same time!).
@potatothorn9 ай бұрын
pretty cool/ we still find a lot of bullets along the trail, i forget exactly but i think some of the range berms were flattened out and used on the dirt trail/ road i think. there are also a lot of remnants of the old ranch roads on the hillsides

@potatothorn10 ай бұрын
to Vegas from where? driving or flying and renting a car? ghost towns are tricky there are a lot of them but some are far more interesting than others. Rhyolite is the main one a couple hours from Vegas you could look that up. for sand dunes there are a few options but all a few hours from Vegas... Kelso Dunes might be the easiest to get to at the moment because of problems with the roads near death valley..... look up kelso dunes, that's a great spot.
