Hello, I watch your videos on KZbin. I will buy a torque wrench for the K100 motorcycle engine. 20-120 N.M Will an adjustable torque wrench be enough or should I buy 25-220?

Lovely John , Very informative ,particularly helpful for those that have working car and don't want to go the whole hog and wire in a fuse box . Does that mean l need to be making another batch of spanners?

Didn't realise Expressed did that repair. Glad to see they do as I need one! What way have you decided to do the repair? Panel first then wheel tub?

Undecided yet Gareth, seen Col Rooney do it either way and all turn out good, mind you he is the expert :-) reckon I will cut out the rot and see what is left

well explained John. Thanks. It's quite a puzzle working out what order each panel need to be cot out and replaced in without loosing reference points

I take it this mask isn't running off a compressor John? (can't see a hose). I have an air-fed mask (for painting 2K) and it uses up a hell of a lot of air
@hillmanimprestoration
@hillmanimprestoration 9 ай бұрын
Yes, self contained and I had scratched my head wondering if I could detach the welding filter and use it for paint as well :-) as your right, my old devilbiss MPV as well as getting too expensive for consumables for once or twice a year use needs decent air flow, I have to use a separate air line for it rather than the loop. Not much difference cost wise either in grand scheme and no air lines www.r-techwelding.co.uk/r-tech-spiritus-air-pro-air-fed-welding-mask-system

I bought a separate compressor to put outside the work-area to pull in clean(er) air for the mask but it wasn't big enough for more than about 6 mins spraying then an alarm goes off on the belt you need to jump out the workshop, wait on compressor pumping up again, then get back in with mask etc and try to pick up where you left off then the alarm goes off again 🙄I bought 2 more compressors hoping I could manifold them all together to get more air but all that seems to happen is one empties and the other ones fill up the empty one. I think perhaps need one-way valves (if such a thing exists) so that you have 2 or 3 feeding tool at same time using less air from each one @@hillmanimprestoration

That is terrible, not seen that but I have no alarm on the older mask, I only have one compressor and its only 14cfm with 100L tank, gun wise mine are all smaller HVLP ones as I am not in a hurry and not skilled enough to lay it on thick. Gun wise I have a couple of SLG with 1.4 and 1.0 setups

I have half an Imp in a lock-up and today was looking at the construction of the area you're currently working on. Was wondering if would be possible to unpick all the spot-welds on the 'crossmember' panel to get in at the box-section etc behind it. Also noticed it has quite a few spot-welds joining it to the lower part of the inner wheeltub
@hillmanimprestoration
@hillmanimprestoration 9 ай бұрын
Yes, you can pull the rear vertical cross member panel off , loads of spot welds including the captive nut supports. It fits almost like a finisher panel for the rear of the full floor pan. It is not a panel I can find in the parts manual so no idea what it is actually called. It will come from inner wheel tub one side all the way to the other.

well before I start on my actual Imp I think I'll try removing the whole 'panle with no name from the half-Imp to see how I getr on doing the repairs@@hillmanimprestoration

John, May I remind you that we vehicle body engineers do have brains that are far superior to a computer (only a little slower)!! I worked in the Drawing office at Humber road in the mid 60's when this and the other later models of Hillman, Humber, Singer, & Sunbeams were designed. Most of the senior colleagues were all used in aircraft design during the war (39 - 45) and had to know all about the stress calculations to keep the planes as light as possible while being as strong as possible To cope with the forces involved in areal dog fighting! These skills were transferred to the car bodies when they returned to peaceful times! Rootes bodies were some of the most torsionally stiff shells in production with the AVENGER having the stiffest in that cars class!

Hi @johnmoncrieff3034. I don't suppose you know of any drawings that might have been made regarding a Hillman Imp pick-up commissioned by John T Panks and built in the Rootes Experimental Dept between 1965 & 1967? It's a long-shot but the timeframe you mention above fits

Sorry John, I did not think I put any slight on the engineering side at all, in fact quite the opposite :-) it is one of the things I actually admire about the time and the car itself especially given the time lines from concept to delivery. Apologies to everyone that took what I said any differently to that. My background is also in engineering ;-) and role through the drafting board to full cad and simulation albeit not aircraft or vehicle body design.

funny as I'm doing exact same thing on sills I've had for about 30 years. Rusty in storage and can't seem to shift it with electrolysis (despite doing this successfully on loads of other bits of metal), Have been thinking would it be better to just buy new ones but if yours are new and also have a bit rust on them might as well persevere with my old ones (bought from The Club in 1994)
@hillmanimprestoration
@hillmanimprestoration 10 ай бұрын
Entirely up to you. If you bought those in 1994 chances are they were hand made by one of a couple of suppliers and you will find the ones available from ex-pressed steel panels now are a much better fit indeed. if you have failed to clear the surface rust using the method you describe something is wrong. I had surface rust as I have had these sitting since last year and at one point the workshop was open to the elements while the workshop roof was replaced, everything was soaked. the workshop has been a work in progress at same time as the car. If you were lucky enough to buy factory sills from the club they would b worth having media blasted and then acid etched using your preferred rust eater. My preference would be to media blast first.

yes, its pretty much a standard play sheet for an imp, this has just so much surface damage with the salt air, the exposed metal is weak

@hillmanimprestoration
@hillmanimprestoration 10 ай бұрын
I wish this floor was solid, ended up being even worse after blasting it clean, looks like surface rust but afterwards it was well pitted and weak :-( so both side floor pans will be replaced. inside the box sections under the back seat were pretty OK which is surprising. This car was stored in a garage on the Ayrshire cost for a long time, the sea air had not been kind to anything,
