If you are familiar with C/C++, learning SDL would be an easiest way to write GUI programs. I'm sure that raytracing isn't the thing you should learn now.

you can use pyglet, but in the case of raytracing one just create frame by frame in images, and then you can make a video putting the images together

Funny thing actually, the people who worked on The Boondocks actually did some of the designs and animation on The Legend of Korra...to make it more I think slim and more humorous
